The short answer
For jigging on a light rod, look at the Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid; for a line the maker sells for both jigging and tip-ups on a 150-yard spool, the FINS Icetamer; and for tip-ups, the Sufix Performance Tip-Up Ice Braid, a polyester braid rather than a micro-diameter one, or its vinyl-coated sibling, the Sufix Performance V-Coat Tip-Up Line.
Our verdict
Our Top Picks at a Glance
Braid looks like a poor fit for the ice: it is woven fiber, and water that gets into woven fiber freezes. Makers answer with water-repellent fibers, coatings and resin treatments, and sell the result as ice braid fishing line. This guide compares eight braided ice fishing lines from five brands. Each is linked as one exact test, spool length and colour, with the maker’s own figures for diameter and construction wherever the maker publishes them. A line is included if its maker made or markets it for ice fishing; open-water braids that some owners spool for winter are not picks. It sits with our rod, reel, line and tackle guides in the Outgearly fishing gear section.
If you are still choosing between braid, mono and fluorocarbon, that is the wider question of the best line for ice fishing, which our ice fishing line guide answers across mono, fluorocarbon and braid; this guide covers braid. Owners in the threads we read describe braid as a tool for deeper water, bigger fish and the shack, and they disagree about how much ice-marketed braid helps in the cold, so the guide states those disagreements rather than smoothing them over.

Compare the 8 Braided Ice Fishing Lines
All eight side by side. Every row is one test, spool length and colour. Figures are the maker’s for the linked line; “Not published” means the maker gives no figure on the pages we could read, and where we use another source we name it. Carriers are the fibers or strands the maker states. Amazon’s own attribute fields disagree with some makers (the 832’s material is one), and we follow the maker.
Price tiers are per spool, and the spools run from 50 to 150 yards, so a higher tier does not mean a higher price per yard. Live prices are in the comparison table, not in the text.

How We Picked These Lines
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves. We found no independent test of any of the eight lines, so each review says which owner reports or maker pages it rests on.
What every pick had to meet
- The maker made or markets the line for ice fishing, or for tip-ups.
- It is a braid or braided line (we left fused and monofilament lines out of the picks).
- Amazon lists the exact test, spool length and colour, new and in stock, and Amazon’s product data returns the listing as valid.
- We prefer Amazon.com and the brand’s own storefront, accept any other seller that holds a new, in-stock offer, and name that seller in the pick’s review.
- A listing sold by a third-party seller at a price above the maker’s own published list price is not a pick. Mason’s braided nylon tip-up line (#50T-30) was left out on this rule: Mason lists the 30 lb, 50-yard spool (#50T-30) at $6.42 on its own site, and its only Amazon offer when we checked came from a third-party seller well above that.
- Vicious Ice Braid is sold on Amazon by Cypress Creek Outdoors, the company that owns Vicious, so the rule above does not exclude it; its Amazon price was still above Vicious’s own web price for the same spool. Its review says so.
- Specs are the maker’s, cross-checked against Amazon’s feature bullets; where they disagree we give the maker’s figure or say the sources differ.
Where the specs and the evidence come from, how independent each source is and what owners say about ice braid
Where the specs and the evidence come from
Diameters, test ratings, spool lengths and construction come from the maker pages linked in each review: Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid, Sufix Performance Ice Braid, Sufix Performance Tip-Up Ice Braid, Sufix Performance V-Coat Tip-Up Line, FINS Icetamer, Reaction Tackle Ice Braid and Vicious Ice Braid. Vicious gives its diameters on its own Amazon listing rather than its web page, and the review says so. Clam’s own page refused our reader, so the Clam figures are Clam’s announcement text as reproduced by a retailer, Dakota Angler, and are labelled that way.
How independent each source is
Maker pages and a maker’s blog are the maker talking about its own product. A retailer’s page, including one that reproduces the maker’s text, is a retailer page. Owner reports come from forum and Reddit threads, which are individual experiences with unstated conditions, not tests. Every review carries an Evidence line saying which of these it rests on.
What owners say about ice braid
Owners do not agree on whether ice-marketed braid stays clear of ice. In a 2019 In-Depth Outdoors thread one poster wrote, “They all form ice beads pretty much the same. There’s nothing getting around freezing temps and water.” Another answered, “I switched to mono for outside rods, braid on shack rods.” In a Reddit thread another wrote, “Even the braided line made for ice fishing (so the label says) does it so i stick with regular mono.” A different poster in the same thread wrote, “The ice braid still freezes up some but is much better than regular which I would not recommend.” The same thread has a poster who fishes mostly in a shack and says, “ice buildup isn’t much of an issue.” The picks below are the lines their makers sell against icing; none of them is promised to stay ice-free.
Detailed Reviews of Each Line
Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid, 8-Fiber Jigging Braid
Anglers who jig with a light rod, plan to tie on a fluorocarbon leader and fish mostly from a shack or on milder days.
$12.71 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
An eight-fiber ice braid from Sufix in six tests from 4 to 30 lb, which Sufix markets for crappies, walleyes, perch, lake trout and pike. The linked spool is 6 lb in Fire Camo, 50 yards. Owners disagree about how much it helps against icing.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: 6 lb 832 Ice Braid.
Sufix says the line has 8 fibers, 7 HMPE plus 1 GORE Performance Fiber, at 32 weaves per inch, and describes the fibers this way: “HMPE Fibers provide high strength & sensitivity, small diameter & hydrophobic water-repellent protection that resists freezing.” Its page for the line lists 6 lb at 0.006 in. Fire Camo is one of four colours Sufix names in its launch blog, alongside Ice Camo, Ghost and Neon Lime. Amazon’s attribute field for this listing says the material is fluorocarbon, while Sufix describes HMPE and GORE fibers; we follow Sufix.
On the ice, an owner in a 2014 In-Depth Outdoors thread wrote, “On my Quicktip I have 6lb 832 ice braid, with an anywhere from a 4-8lb test fluoro leader depending on what I’m targeting.” That post is from 2014, so the colour we link may be newer than the spool that owner used. On icing, owners split: one poster in a Reddit thread said, “I’ve only tried a few braids but suffix 832 seems to be working the best for me in terms of avoiding freezing,” while a poster in another In-Depth Outdoors thread wrote, “I’ve used power pro ice tec and 832 ice – not a fan, they both ice up more than fireline and don’t jig as well for me.”
Specs (linked variant: 6 lb, Fire Camo, 50 yd)
- Test: 6 lb (Sufix lists 4, 6, 8, 10, 20 and 30 lb)
- Diameter: 0.006 in (Sufix)
- Spool: 50 yd
- Construction: 8 fibers, 7 HMPE plus 1 GORE Performance Fiber, 32 weaves per inch (Sufix)
- Treatment: hydrophobic, water-repellent fibers (Sufix)
Pros
- Eight fibers, seven HMPE and one GORE Performance Fiber, per Sufix
- Sufix publishes a diameter for every test, 0.006 in at the linked 6 lb
- A 50-yard spool fits a single light ice rod
- Fire Camo and three other colours are listed by Sufix
Cons
- Owners report it still ices up, and owners disagree about whether it ices less than other lines
- The linked spool is 50 yards, so a reel with a lot of backing needs more than one
- Amazon’s material field disagrees with Sufix’s description
Who should buy it
Anglers who jig with a light rod, plan to tie on a fluorocarbon leader and fish mostly from a shack or on milder days.
Sufix Performance Ice Braid, Y6 75-Yd Ice Braid
Anglers who want a 10 lb ice braid on a 75-yard spool and who will tie on a fluorocarbon leader.
$16.25 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
Sufix’s other ice braid, sold on a 75-yard spool and listed on Amazon under its older name, “Sufix Ice Braid”. The linked line is 10 lb in Glacier Blue. The owner reports we found name “Sufix ice braid” without saying which Sufix ice line they mean.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: Sufix ice braid, line and test not stated.
Sufix describes the line this way: “Made with digital Y6 Braiding™ it sheds water, resists freezing, stays flexible under extremely cold conditions and is super strong and ultra quiet.” Carriers and material are not published beyond the Y6 braiding name; Amazon lists the material as a blend. Sufix’s page lists 10 lb at 0.008 in on a 75-yard spool. The Amazon listing is titled “Sufix Ice Braid 10 lb (Glacier Blue, Size- 75 YD Spool)”, and its included components read “Performance Ice Braid 10 lb Glacier Blue”, so we treat the two names as one line.
In a 2023 reply in an In-Depth Outdoors thread, an owner wrote, “Sufix Ice Braid did pretty decent but did get 1 ice bead where the line met the water.” The post does not state a test or say which Sufix ice braid. In a Reddit thread another owner wrote, “I fish deep water and like suffix ice braid with a uni to uni knot to floro leader.” That poster does not say which Sufix ice braid either. An owner in a 2014 thread about Sufix ice braid wrote, “While I love Suffix ice braid, I rarely use it when outside.” That poster does not name the line either, and the only Sufix line named in that thread is the 832.
Specs (linked variant: 10 lb, Glacier Blue, 75 yd)
- Test: 10 lb (Sufix lists 4, 6, 8, 10, 20 and 30 lb)
- Diameter: 0.008 in (Sufix)
- Spool: 75 yd
- Construction: digital Y6 braiding; carriers not published
- Treatment: sheds water, per Sufix
Pros
- A 75-yard spool, longer than the 832’s 50-yard spool
- Sufix publishes a diameter for every test, 0.008 in at 10 lb
- Glacier Blue is the colour of the linked spool
Cons
- Owner reports of “Sufix ice braid”, including ice beads and avoiding it outside, do not say which Sufix line
- Carriers and material are not published
- Amazon’s listing uses the older “Sufix Ice Braid” name
Who should buy it
Anglers who want a 10 lb ice braid on a 75-yard spool and who will tie on a fluorocarbon leader.
FINS Icetamer, Resin-Infused 4-Strand
Anglers who want one braid for jigging and tip-ups on a 150-yard spool and are willing to rely on the maker's claims.
$22.80 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
A four-strand ice braid made in Kentucky, which FINS says is resin-infused so it takes on no water. The linked spool is 6 lb in Green, 150 yards. FINS does not publish a diameter for it on the page we read.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: FINS product page.
FINS says on its product page, “Utilizing FINS’ exclusive resin-infusion process, this braid achieves zero water absorption, eliminating the risk of icing and ensuring top performance in freezing temperatures.” That is the maker’s claim, and the owner threads above show anglers do not treat any braid as risk-free. FINS describes the 4-strand braid as built for tip-ups and jigging both, says it is designed, engineered and braided in Erlanger, Kentucky, and lists 2, 4, 6, 8, 20 and 30 lb tests in yellow, green, black or metered, on 50 and 150 yard spools. The page we read gives no diameter table, so the table shows “Not published”. Amazon’s listing identifies the linked variant as Green, 6.0 Pounds, 150 Yards, sold by FINS and shipped by Amazon, and describes the material as ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene.
We found no independent test of the Icetamer and no owner report that names the test we link, so this pick rests on the maker’s page.
Specs (linked variant: 6 lb, Green, 150 yd)
- Test: 6 lb (FINS lists 2, 4, 6, 8, 20 and 30 lb)
- Diameter: not published
- Spool: 150 yd (FINS lists 50 and 150 yd)
- Construction: 4 strand, high tenacity polyethylene fibers (FINS)
- Treatment: resin infusion (FINS)
Pros
- Resin-infused 4-strand construction that FINS says takes on no water
- A 150-yard spool, with 2 to 30 lb tests for panfish through pike per FINS
- Made in Erlanger, Kentucky, per FINS
- Sold by FINS on Amazon and shipped by Amazon
Cons
- No diameter is published, and we found no independent test of it
- The maker’s icing claim is untested by us, and owners in the threads above report that braid of any kind can ice up
Who should buy it
Anglers who want one braid for jigging and tip-ups on a 150-yard spool and are willing to rely on the maker’s claims.
Vicious Ice Braid, Hi-Vis 100-Yd Braid
Anglers who watch the line above the hole, want a 10 lb braid on a 100-yard spool for walleye jigging, and accept maker-only figures and an Amazon price above Vicious's own web price.
$13.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
A hi-vis yellow ice braid from Vicious, sold in 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 lb tests on 100-yard spools. The linked spool is 10 lb (PIBPY10), the test Vicious’s Amazon listing suggests for walleye jigging. Vicious publishes no strand count and no coating for it, and at the time of writing the Amazon price was above Vicious’s own web price for the same spool.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Vicious product page and Vicious’s Amazon listing.
Vicious’s page for the 10 lb spool says, “Vicious Ice braided fishing line is designed to deliver all the benefits of braided line while in icy conditions.” It lists “Zero stretch”, “Abrasion resistant”, “Smaller diameter than monofilament” and “Excellent sensitivity”, with 100 yards per spool. The diameters come from Vicious’s Amazon listing: “FIVE TESTS AND DIAMETERS: 5lb .003, 7lb .004, 10lb .005, 15lb .006 and 20lb .007 inch.” The same listing says, “Choose 5 lb or 7 lb for panfish and perch, 10 lb for walleye jigging, and the 15 lb or 20-pound for pike, lake trout and heavy tip-up and rattle reel duty.” Amazon’s attribute field gives a line size of 0.01 in, which does not match that bullet; we use the maker’s 0.005 in. Neither page states a strand count or a coating, so the table says “Not published” for both.
We found no independent test and no owner report for the Vicious Ice line, so this pick rests on the maker’s pages. It is sold by Cypress Creek Outdoors, the maker’s own company, on Amazon at the time of writing, and the Amazon price was then above the price Vicious lists on its own website for the same 10 lb, 100-yard spool, so compare the two before you buy. Against the Reaction Tackle Ice Braid reviewed next, which also publishes diameters, the Vicious spool is 100 yards rather than 150, and Vicious names no coating where Reaction Tackle names a fluoropolymer one.
Specs (linked variant: 10 lb, Hi-Vis Yellow, 100 yd)
- Test: 10 lb (Vicious lists 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 lb)
- Diameter: 0.005 in (Vicious’s Amazon listing; its web page gives none)
- Spool: 100 yd (Vicious)
- Construction: braid; strand count not published
- Treatment: coating not published
- Colour: Hi-Vis Yellow (model PIBPY10)
Pros
- Vicious lists a diameter for every test, 0.005 in at the linked 10 lb
- A 100-yard spool in five tests
- Hi-Vis Yellow for watching the line above the hole, which Vicious says shows a light bite
- Sold by the maker’s own company on Amazon
Cons
- Vicious names no strand count, coating or water-repellent treatment
- The Amazon price was above Vicious’s own web price when we checked
- Vicious itself suggests a fluorocarbon leader for finicky panfish in clear shallow water
- No independent test or owner report found
Who should buy it
Anglers who watch the line above the hole, want a 10 lb braid on a 100-yard spool for walleye jigging, and accept maker-only figures and an Amazon price above Vicious’s own web price.
Reaction Tackle Ice Braid, 8-Strand 150-Yd Braid
Anglers who want a published diameter and a 150-yard spool for tip-ups or jigging and accept that the figures are the maker's.
$19.98 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
An 8-strand ice braid in six tests from 4 to 30 lb on 150-yard spools, which Reaction Tackle says has a fluoropolymer and hydrophobic coating. The linked spool is 8 lb in Ice Camo, 0.18 mm by the maker’s chart.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Reaction Tackle product page.
Reaction Tackle’s page says, “The fluoropolymer and hydrophobic coating repel water, preventing freeze-ups and ensuring optimal performance in harsh conditions.” It lists diameters by test (4 lb .10 mm, 6 lb .14 mm, 8 lb .18 mm, 10 lb .20 mm, 20 lb .23 mm, 30 lb .29 mm), a 150-yard length and three colours: Ice Camo, Ice White and Hi Vis Yellow. Amazon’s bullets agree on 8 strands, 150 yards and the coating. Amazon lists the linked variant as Ice Camo, 8 Lb (150 Yards), sold by Reaction Tackle and shipped by Amazon.
The reviews on Reaction Tackle’s own page are on a seller’s site, so we do not count them as independent. This pick rests on the maker’s page.
Specs (linked variant: 8 lb, Ice Camo, 150 yd)
- Test: 8 lb (Reaction Tackle lists 4, 6, 8, 10, 20 and 30 lb)
- Diameter: 0.18 mm (Reaction Tackle)
- Spool: 150 yd
- Construction: 8 strands of PE fiber (Reaction Tackle)
- Treatment: fluoropolymer and hydrophobic coating (Reaction Tackle)
Pros
- Eight strands of PE with a fluoropolymer and hydrophobic coating, per the maker
- A diameter is published for every test, 0.18 mm at 8 lb
- A 150-yard spool in three colours
- Sold by Reaction Tackle on Amazon and shipped by Amazon
Cons
- The coating claim is the maker’s, and no independent or owner report is quoted here
Who should buy it
Anglers who want a published diameter and a 150-yard spool for tip-ups or jigging and accept that the figures are the maker’s.
Clam CPT Frost Braid, Japanese-Made 4-Strand
Anglers who want a light-test, tight-weave braid and are comfortable buying from a third-party seller.
$19.52 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
A four-strand ice braid that Clam’s announcement says was designed for ice anglers by Sun Line Co. and made in Japan. The linked spool is 6 lb in Smoke, 50 yards, and the Amazon buy box was held by a third-party seller when we checked.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: Frost braid, variant not stated.
Clam’s announcement, as reproduced by the retailer Dakota Angler, says the line was “designed for ice anglers by Sun Line Co.” and is “Japanese-made”. It lists a “Four- strand braid with an extremely tight weave”, “Virtually no stretch”, an “IGFA compatible pound test rating” and a half-spool mark, in Smoke and Hi-Vis Yellow, in 4, 6, 8, 10 and 15 lb. Amazon’s family lists a 4 lb Hi-Vis Yellow, a 6 lb Smoke and an 8 lb Smoke, and the linked variant is “6lb – 2lb Dia – Smoke – 50 Yard”, which reads as a diameter equal to a 2 lb monofilament. No diameter in inches or millimetres is published, so the table shows “Not published”.
On the ice, an owner in a 2023 In-Depth Outdoors thread wrote, “I use frost braid all the time out in the weather. Ice that does form wipes right off if you don’t let it get too thick.” The post does not state a test. Another owner in the same thread wrote, “I had good results using the CPT Frost Ice Line made by Sunline for Clam.” A third wrote about braid in general, “They all form ice beads pretty much the same.” On 2026-10-22 Amazon’s buy box for this listing rotated between two third-party sellers, KART IT and Homestead Supply & More, not Clam.
Specs (linked variant: 6 lb, Smoke, 50 yd)
- Test: 6 lb (the retailer lists 4, 6, 8, 10 and 15 lb)
- Diameter: not published (Amazon’s variant reads “2lb Dia”, a mono-equivalent)
- Spool: 50 yd
- Construction: four strand, tight weave (Clam, via retailer)
- Treatment: not stated
Pros
- Four-strand tight weave, made in Japan by Sun Line Co., per Clam’s announcement
- Owners in the thread above report good results outside in the weather
- A half-spool mark, per Clam’s announcement
- A diameter reference (mono-equivalent) in the listing
Cons
- No diameter in inches or millimetres is published
- The buy box is a third-party seller, not Clam
- Clam’s own page refused our reader, so the specs are second-hand from a retailer
Who should buy it
Anglers who want a light-test, tight-weave braid and are comfortable buying from a third-party seller.
Sufix Performance Tip-Up Ice Braid, Polyester Tip-Up Braid
Sufix Performance Tip-Up Ice Braid
Tip-up anglers who want a braided, handleable line in a light test from a brand that publishes diameters.
$20.75 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
A high tenacity polyester braid made for tip-ups, in 15, 20, 30 and 50 lb tests. The linked spool is 15 lb in Black, 150 yards, sold by Amazon.com. It is a polyester tip-up line, not a micro-diameter jigging braid.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: 30 lb Performance Tip Up line.
Sufix says the line is made with “high tenacity polyester braid known as HTP” and uses the Hydro Fusion Process. Its page lists 15 lb at 0.011 in, 20 lb at 0.014 in, 30 lb at 0.017 in and 50 lb at 0.024 in. The 150-yard length comes from Sufix’s own SKU map (610-215BLK is the 150-yard, 15 lb Black); Amazon’s listing gives its length in inches, which is not usable, and its bullet text repeats the title.
On the ice, an owner in a 2015 In-Depth Outdoors thread wrote, “I have had great experiences using the Sufix Performance Tip Up line in 30lb. Test and is uncoated.” That post is from 2015 and covers the 30 lb, not the 15 lb we link. The same thread has a poster unhappy with the metered black-and-white version, and another who uses the coated line reviewed next; neither is the uncoated line we link. Separately, a poster in a Reddit tip-up line thread wrote that “Using a superbraid on tip ups is crazy” and recommends the thicker Dacron instead, which is a different line type from this polyester braid.
Specs (linked variant: 15 lb, Black, 150 yd)
- Test: 15 lb (Sufix lists 15, 20, 30 and 50 lb)
- Diameter: 0.011 in (Sufix)
- Spool: 150 yd (from Sufix’s SKU map; the Amazon listing’s length field is unusable)
- Construction: HTP high tenacity polyester braid (Sufix)
- Treatment: Hydro Fusion Process (Sufix)
Pros
- A polyester tip-up braid with published diameters from 15 to 50 lb
- A 150-yard spool sold by Amazon.com
- An owner reports good results with the 30 lb of the same line
- Black is the colour of the linked spool
Cons
- The owner report is for the 30 lb, not the 15 lb we link
- The Amazon listing gives its length in inches and repeats its title as its bullet text, so the spool length rests on Sufix’s SKU map
- A tip-up line, not a micro-diameter jigging braid, so it is not a light-jigging choice
Who should buy it
Tip-up anglers who want a braided, handleable line in a light test from a brand that publishes diameters.
Sufix Performance V-Coat Tip-Up Line, Vinyl-Coated Tip-Up Braid
Sufix Performance V-Coat Tip-Up Line
Tip-up anglers who want a coated line sold against freezing and who accept an owner's report that coated lines coil in the cold.
$14.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:43 UTCVerdict
The coated version of Sufix’s polyester tip-up braid, with a vinyl coating Sufix describes as for anti-freezing and water proofing. The linked spool is 15 lb in Black, 50 yards, sold by Amazon.com. Sufix’s current page lists only the 20 and 30 lb, so the 15 lb has no published diameter.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: 20 lb coated Sufix tip-up line (solid black).
Sufix’s page describes the same “high tenacity polyester braid known as HTP” and Hydro Fusion Process as the uncoated tip-up line, and adds “V-Coat (Vinyl coating) for extreme anti-freezing, water proofing and cold weather handling”. It lists 20 lb at 0.027 in and 30 lb at 0.03 in on 50-yard spools, in Black. Amazon’s listing identifies the linked variant as Black, 15-Pound, model 609-115BLK, with included components “Performance V-Coat Tip Up 15 lb Black” and a 50-yard length; its first bullet reads “Vinyl coating for Extreme Anti-Freezing and Water Proofing”. The 15 lb is not on Sufix’s current specification table, so its diameter is not published; Sufix’s 609 model numbers for the 20 and 30 lb (609-120BLK, 609-130BLK) match the linked 609-115BLK. The coating is what separates it from pick 7, the uncoated line.
On the ice, an owner in the 2015 In-Depth Outdoors thread wrote, “I use 20lb coated Suffix w/ 6lb flouro leaders for walleyes. Best tip up line i’ve used. Doesn’t freeze up and stick to itself and with the smaller diameter remains super pliable under any conditions.” Asked which version, he wrote, “I use the solid black nylon coated.” He calls the coating nylon where Sufix says vinyl, and his line is the 20 lb, not the 15 lb we link. In the same thread another poster wrote, “I think vinyl and PVC coated tip up lines tend to coil up and cold weather but do a great job and staying freeze-proof.” Amazon.com held the buy box when we checked on 2026-10-22, with low stock.
Specs (linked variant: 15 lb, Black, 50 yd)
- Test: 15 lb (Sufix’s current page lists 20 and 30 lb)
- Diameter: not published for 15 lb (Sufix lists 20 lb at 0.027 in, 30 lb at 0.03 in)
- Spool: 50 yd
- Construction: HTP high tenacity polyester braid (Sufix)
- Treatment: vinyl coating and Hydro Fusion Process (Sufix)
Pros
- A vinyl coating that Sufix describes as for anti-freezing and water proofing
- An owner reports the 20 lb coated line does not freeze up and stays pliable
- Sold by Amazon.com
- Black is the colour of the linked spool
Cons
- No diameter is published for the 15 lb
- An owner writes that coated tip-up lines tend to coil up in the cold
- A 50-yard spool, a third of pick 7’s 150 yards
- Amazon showed low stock when we checked
Who should buy it
Tip-up anglers who want a coated line sold against freezing and who accept an owner’s report that coated lines coil in the cold.
How to Choose an Ice Braid
Test, diameter and spool length
An ice fishing braided line comes in tests from 2 lb to 50 lb across these eight, so match the test to the fish and the hole. In the 2014 In-Depth Outdoors thread, one owner wrote, “For pan fish, I would just use a small diameter mono over a braid.” For braid, the same owner wrote, “For Lake Trout, a 10-20lb test ice braid is ideal with a 3-6 foot long 10lb Fluoro leader.” Those are one owner’s figures, not a standard. Check each line’s published diameter: Reaction Tackle and Sufix publish one for every test of the 832, Performance Ice Braid and Tip-Up Ice Braid, and Vicious lists one for every test on its Amazon listing; FINS, Clam and the 15 lb V-Coat do not. Spools run from 50 to 150 yards across the eight, so count how much line your reel holds.

Shack or open ice
Where you fish changes how much the coating matters. A poster in the Reddit thread above fishes mostly in a shack and says “ice buildup isn’t much of an issue,” and Outdoor Life’s guide says, “Braid absorbs water which causes your rod eyelets and reel to freeze up quickly.” Our pop-up shelter guide covers the shelter side.
Leaders
Braid is visible in clear water. Outdoor Life’s author writes, “In almost all clear water situations I will cut 3 or 4 feet of fluorocarbon line to use as a leader.” That is Outdoor Life’s practice, and owners above run the same setup.
Which line for which fish
Panfish and light jigging. Owners disagree about braid for panfish: one In-Depth Outdoors poster wrote, “No braid on my panfish rods. Not needed imo.” An owner who fishes docks into early ice wrote in a different thread, “I use Clams Frost braid in 4 pound on my two long rods that I use.” If you want a braid for light jigging, several makers list tests of 4 lb or less: Sufix lists 4 lb for the 832 and the Performance Ice Braid, FINS lists 2 and 4 lb, and Reaction Tackle and Clam (via the retailer) list 4 lb. Picks: Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid, Clam CPT Frost Braid, FINS Icetamer.
Walleye and perch jigging. Picks: Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid, Vicious Ice Braid, Reaction Tackle Ice Braid.
Deep water and lake trout. One owner wrote, “In my opinion, braid really becomes a benefit when you’re fishing deeper than 20 feet or targeting larger fish.” Picks: Sufix Performance Ice Braid, Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid.
Tip-ups. Picks: Sufix Performance Tip-Up Ice Braid, Sufix Performance V-Coat Tip-Up Line, Reaction Tackle Ice Braid, FINS Icetamer. Our tip-up guide covers the tip-ups themselves, and our guides to ice fishing rods and inline ice fishing reels cover what the line goes on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is braided line better for ice fishing?
It depends on depth, fish size and where you stand. Outdoor Life writes, “Braid’s lack of stretch increases sensitivity and helps with hooksets when fishing in deep water.” The same guide says braid absorbs water and freezes in the guides. In the In-Depth Outdoors thread above, one owner wrote, “No braid on my panfish rods. Not needed imo.” and another wrote that braid becomes a benefit deeper than 20 feet or with larger fish.
Q. Can I use regular braid on the ice?
This guide covers lines their makers sell for ice. In a 2019 In-Depth Outdoors thread a poster who tried “power pro and power pro ice” wrote, “Both freeze up about the same.” In a Reddit thread another wrote, “All braid will freeze, the braids made for ice are just labeled ‘ice braid’ there is no difference except they are sold in less yards, volor [sic] and lower lb ratings…”. Sufix describes its 832 Advanced Ice Braid as having “hydrophobic water-repellent protection”. We found no independent test comparing ice-marketed and open-water braid.
Q. Is 20 lb braid stronger than 20 lb mono?
Both carry a maker’s 20 lb rating, so on the label they match. We found no independent breaking-strength test of the lines in this guide, so we do not rank their strength. What a rating does not tell you is diameter and stretch; Outdoor Life says, “Braid, on the other hand, has almost no stretch.”
Q. What is better, X4 or X8 braid?
We found no independent test of ice braids by strand count. FINS and Clam describe four-strand lines, Reaction Tackle sells an 8-strand line, and Vicious publishes no strand count for its ice braid. Reaction Tackle says its eight strands give “a thinner, smoother line with exceptional abrasion resistance”. That is the maker’s claim. The Sufix 832 has 8 fibers by Sufix’s description (7 HMPE and 1 GORE).
Q. Braid or Dacron for tip-ups?
Owners are split by line type. A Reddit poster recommended Dacron, writing “It doesn’t knot, freeze up, slice into the ice or your fingers like superbraid line does.” Sufix makes two polyester braids for tip-ups, the uncoated HTP line and the vinyl-coated V-Coat, both reviewed above, and owners report good results with the 30 lb uncoated and the 20 lb coated. Which suits you depends on how you handle line with wet hands.
The bottom line
Final Verdict
Braid for ice is a trade: more sensitivity and less stretch against more fuss when the line gets wet and cold. For jigging on a light rod, the Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid (check price) publishes a diameter at every test and states its eight-fiber build. For a line its maker sells for both jigging and tip-ups on a 150-yard spool, the FINS Icetamer (check price) is the pick, with the caveat that FINS gives no diameter and the icing claim is the maker’s own. For tip-ups, the Sufix Performance Tip-Up Ice Braid (check price) is a polyester braid with published diameters, and the owner report we found covers its 30 lb; the Sufix Performance V-Coat Tip-Up Line (check price) adds a vinyl coating that Sufix describes as anti-freezing, on a 50-yard spool. For deeper water, the Sufix Performance Ice Braid (check price) is 0.008 in at the linked 10 lb, per Sufix. For an 8-strand coated braid with a published diameter, the Reaction Tackle Ice Braid (check price) is the pick. For light panfish jigging, the Clam CPT Frost Braid (check price) in 6 lb on a 50-yard spool. For a hi-vis yellow 100-yard spool that its maker suggests in 10 lb for walleye jigging, the Vicious Ice Braid (check price), sold above the maker’s own web price at the time of writing. None of the eight was tested by us, and some owners say no braid is free of ice, so consider a fluorocarbon leader and check which seller holds the Amazon buy box before you buy.
