Pop-Up Ice Fishing Shelters: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

To carry a shelter out on foot for two or three anglers, the Eskimo QuickFish 3i is an insulated 34 sq ft hub that Eskimo lists at 34 lb; for a crew of four or five with a sled or truck, the Eskimo Outbreak 450XDP gives 75 sq ft and an ice-level door; on a tight budget, the ThunderBay Ice Cube 3-4 Man is a non-insulated hub with an 80-inch ceiling.

Our verdict

Top Picks: Pop-Up Ice Shelters at a Glance

A pop-up ice shelter, also called a hub, is a tent-like shanty whose walls snap outward on spring hubs, so it packs into a bag and stands up on the ice in minutes. The choice comes down to a handful of maker figures: how many anglers the maker says it holds, how much floor you can fish, how tall it is in the middle, what it weighs, how long it is packed, and whether the fabric is insulated. This guide compares eight hubs from Eskimo, Otter and ThunderBay that Amazon stocks, with each maker’s figures and its own words on heaters and ventilation.

Which Shelter for Which Crew

One to three anglers carrying it out

If you walk out with the shelter on your back or in a hand-pulled sled, weight and packed length matter more than floor space. Eskimo lists the QuickFish 3i at 34 lb with a 4’4″ packdown and a bag you can carry on your back; Otter lists the Vortex Pro Cabin at 36 lb in its feature list and 47 lb in its product table, packed 56 inches long. ThunderBay does not publish a weight for its Ice Cube 3-4 Man, the one non-insulated hub here. Dress for the ice as well: a hub cuts the wind, but you still sit for hours, and our women’s winter coat guide compares the insulation and shell specs that matter for that.

Picks: Eskimo QuickFish 3i, Otter Vortex Pro Cabin, ThunderBay Ice Cube 3-4 Man

Three to five anglers with a sled or truck

The two 74 and 75 sq ft hubs are rated by their makers for four to five people, and weigh more to match: 57 lb for the Eskimo Outbreak 450XDP, which packs to 58 inches, and 48 or 52 lb for the Otter Vortex Pro Lodge, depending on which Otter figure you read, packed 70 inches long. Both have a full-height door, which matters when you are carrying a heater, an auger and a bucket in and out. If your crew jigs with long rods, the center height is worth checking: 80 inches for the Eskimo, 79 for the Otter. Our ice fishing rod guide lists rod lengths to compare against that ceiling.

Six or more, or nights on the ice

The six-person hubs here are either long (the QuickFish 6HD is 155 by 70 inches set up, and Eskimo’s instructions describe two roof sections on its 6-9 person pop-ups) or wide and five-sided (the Monster Lodge gives 132 sq ft). These are the shelters people ice camp in, which raises the stakes on heat and ventilation: read the section on carbon monoxide below before you sleep in any of them, and pack the basics on our camping checklist.

QuickFish 3i

red

Two or three anglers who carry their shelter out on foot and want insulation without a sled.

$349.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

An insulated three-person hub that packs into a backpack-style bag, for two or three anglers who walk out to fish and move during the day.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Outdoor Life: Eskimo QuickFish 3i.

Eskimo rates the QuickFish 3i for three people with 34 sq ft of fishable area, a 70 by 70 inch footprint, an 80-inch height and a 34 lb weight, and lists a 4’4″ packdown length. It is built from Eskimo’s IQ insulated quilted fabric with a black interior, two D-shaped doors, four windows with removable panels, two vents, six self-tapping ice anchors and two standard tie-downs, with a one-year limited warranty. Eskimo’s Amazon listing adds that the fabric is 600 denier and claims it is “35% warmer than a comparable non-insulated shelter”, without saying how that was measured. Eskimo lists it at $349.99.

Outdoor Life’s Jim Edlund fished it with his daughter and named it the guide’s Best Value pick, writing that it “can be set up in under a minute and fits easily into the included carrying bag with attached cinch straps.” He judged it best for “two adult anglers sitting back to back”, and his cons were the black interior, which is darker than gray-lined hubs, and the lack of full-length doors. The Outdoor Life page was last updated in February 2024.

Verdict

A long insulated hub with a no-trip door and 71 sq ft, for families and groups who want six seats in a shelter that packs to 4’4″.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Eskimo.

Eskimo rates the QuickFish 6HD for six people with 71 sq ft of fishable area in a long 155 by 70 inch footprint, 80 inches high, and lists it at 62 lb with a 4’4″ packdown, the same packed length it gives the QuickFish 3i. It uses the same IQ insulated fabric but with a gray interior, and swaps one D-door for a No-Trip Door that “zips open from ice level, leaving nothing to catch a boot on”. It has six windows, two vents, four mesh pockets, nine ice anchors and three standard tie-downs, with a one-year limited warranty. Eskimo says it “sets up quickly in less than 60 seconds”. Eskimo lists it at $579.99.

red/black

Crews of three to five who drive or sled to their spot and want floor space, a walk-through door and a way to vent a heater.

$599.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

A 75 sq ft insulated hub with a flared base, no-trip door and heater ports that packs to 58 inches, for crews of three to five who haul it by sled or truck.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. North American Outdoorsman: Eskimo Outbreak 450XDP.

The Outbreak 450XDP is Eskimo’s update of the 450XD with “Packdown” hubs that cut its packed length to 58 inches, short enough, Eskimo says, for a 5.5-foot truck bed or a tow sled. Eskimo rates it for four to five people with 75 sq ft of fishable area, a 138 by 139 inch footprint, 80 inches of height and a weight of 57 lb. The StormShield fabric is “Three-layer bonded fabric with 80 grams of high-loft insulation”, with a gray interior. It has a No-Trip Door plus a D-door, seven windows, two vents, nine ice anchors and four cam-strap tie-downs. For heat, Eskimo adds two sealable duct ports for heaters used “inside or outside the shelter, including diesel heaters”, and a zippered port for a propane line. Eskimo lists it at $629.99.

North American Outdoorsman names it best overall, writing: “The new Outbreak 450XDP features pack-down hub geometry, enabling a significantly more compact packed length for easier transport.” Some of its other figures (300-denier fabric, about 85 lb with a sled) are not Eskimo’s, so we use Eskimo’s. Outdoor Life also named the Outbreak its Best Overall, but it tested the earlier 450XD, which shares the 75 sq ft floor but not the packdown hubs; its tester fit himself, three kids and a dog inside for a day of trout fishing.

Pros

  • 75 sq ft flared floor that packs to 58 inches, per Eskimo
  • Ice-level No-Trip Door plus two sealable heater duct ports and a propane line port
  • Named best overall by North American Outdoorsman

Cons

  • 57 lb, per Eskimo: a sled, ATV or truck load rather than a backpack
  • Outdoor Life’s hands-on test covered the earlier 450XD, not this XDP

Five-Sided Small Hub

Two anglers, or two plus a child, who want a full door and a five-sided floor.

$422.88 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

A five-sided 48 sq ft thermal hub with a full door and propane hose port, for two or three anglers who want more floor than the 34 sq ft three-person hubs here.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Otter Outdoors.

Otter rates the Vortex Pro Cabin for two to three people with 48 fishable sq ft over five sides, a 75-inch ceiling and 67-inch walls, collapsing to 56 by 11 by 11 inches. Its feature list says it “weighs 36 lbs”; the product table on the same page says 47 lbs, so we give both. The fabric is Otter’s THERMALTEC 600 denier triple-layer system, an outer shell over a quilted thermal inner, on 11 mm poles. It has a front full-height door with dual-coil zippers, removable TPU windows with insulated covers, interior rod and tool holders, an overhead cargo net, a propane hose port with a hook-and-loop flap, Otter’s Ice-Lock anchoring system with an anchor tie-down kit, and a one-year warranty on the hub. Otter lists it at $425.

Outdoor Life lists the Cabin as its pick for two people but says its writer did not test it: the recommendation is from guide Brian Brosdahl, who is on Otter’s pro staff, so we do not count it as independent. On Amazon it is sold by Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters, an outdoor retailer, not by Amazon.com.

Cons

Three to five anglers who want to stand up and stretch inside and like a five-sided layout over a square one.

$483.68 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

A five-sided 74 sq ft thermal hub with a 79-inch ceiling and full door, for crews of three to five who want standing room.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/IceFishing: Otter Vortex Pro Lodge, year not stated.

Otter rates the Vortex Pro Lodge for four to five people with 74 fishable sq ft, a 79-inch ceiling and 69-inch walls, collapsing to 70 by 11.5 by 11.5 inches. As with the Cabin, its page gives two weights: “weighs 48 lbs” in the feature list and 52 lbs in the product table. Fabric, poles, door, propane port, anchoring kit and warranty are the same as the Cabin’s. Otter lists it at $575.

We found no independent test of the Pro Lodge. In a 2022 r/IceFishing thread comparing it with the Outbreak 450XD, one owner writes: “I have the vortex pro lodge. The no trip door is a very nice feature. I am able to pop it up and pull my sled right in to start setting up.” The same owner had two roof poles pop out of a hub, which they put down to forcing it open, and another poster reported rough Bass Pro Shops reviews of the Otter Pro series. Cons

  • Otter’s page gives two weights, 48 and 52 lb

$805.02 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

A five-sided 132 sq ft thermal hub for six to eight anglers or a weekend ice camp, at 73 lb by Otter’s feature list.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Outdoor Life: Otter Vortex Pro Monster Lodge (2022-23 redesign).

Otter rates the Monster Lodge for six to eight people with 132 fishable sq ft, a 79-inch ceiling and 68-inch walls. Its feature list gives 73 lbs and a collapsed size of 68 by 13.5 by 13.5 inches; its product table gives 80 lbs and 68 by 13.5 by 12 inches. Fabric, poles, full door, propane port, anchoring kit and one-year hub warranty match the other Vortex Pro hubs. Otter lists it at $875.

Outdoor Life’s Jim Edlund bought one to ice camp with friends and family and names it the guide’s pick for ice camping: “Featuring an expansive 132 square feet of fishable space, the Vortex Pro Monster Lodge will accommodate six to eight anglers without bunks and gear.” He reports room for two to three cots, and lists its cons plainly: one packing strap where he needed four or five, one full-size door plus a partial one, and a door pole that splintered and needed tape. He heated it with a propane heater with low-oxygen shut-off and kept two carbon monoxide detectors running. On Amazon it is sold by Frank’s Great Outdoors.

Cons

non-insulated

Anglers new to the ice, or those who fish late-season mild days, who want an entry-level wind block.

$179.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

A non-insulated square hub with a blackout coating and an 80-inch ceiling, for anglers who fish mild days or want a low-cost first shelter.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: ThunderBay.

ThunderBay sells this as the Ice Cube 3 Man Portable Ice Shelter: 300 denier fabric with a blackout coating, hook-and-loop windows, 90 by 90 inches hub to hub with an 80-inch ceiling, and an extra-wide skirt. Its own Amazon listing calls it a 3-4 man shelter with 34 sq ft of fishable area and a non-insulated build. The two pages differ on what is in the bag: the maker page says eight self-tapping ice anchors and a carry bag; the Amazon listing says six anchors, a carry bag and a 6-inch nylon ice auger for the anchors. ThunderBay publishes no weight. ThunderBay lists it at $249.99.

BC Fishing Journal recommends it among its shelters for the money, noting its blackout coating and 80-inch height; it gives a weight of “just under 20 LBS”, which is not a ThunderBay figure. It is the one shelter here without insulation: Outdoor Life’s Jim Edlund writes that “Non-insulated shelters may be cheaper upfront but cost more in the long run when you consider propane usage.” On Amazon it is sold by ThunderBay’s storefront, listed as “THUNDERBAY PRODUCT”.

Pros

  • Low-cost square hub with an 80-inch ceiling and blackout coating, per ThunderBay
  • Self-tapping anchors and a carry bag included
  • Recommended by BC Fishing Journal among its shelters for the money

Cons

  • Not insulated; Outdoor Life’s Edlund counts uninsulated shelters as costlier to heat
  • ThunderBay publishes no weight, and its two pages differ on the anchor count

Verdict

A long hub (138 x 70 in inside) with six windows, two ceiling vents and twelve ice anchors, for groups on a budget who accept thin published specs.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: ThunderBay Products.

ThunderBay gives the inside as 138 by 70 inches with “Elbow room” of 160 by 90 inches hub to hub, six hook-and-loop vinyl windows, two ceiling vents, 300 denier polyester “Blackout” fabric, heavy-duty fiberglass poles, an extra-wide skirt and twelve heavy-duty ice anchors with reinforced tie-downs. Its Amazon listing rates it for six people with 68 sq ft of fishable area. Heat, Ventilation and Carbon Monoxide

Many anglers heat a hub with a portable propane heater (Outdoor Life’s tester ran one in the Monster Lodge), and the shelter makers’ own guidance is thin, so here is what each one says, word for word where we could find it.

What each maker says

  • Eskimo. Its pop-up shelter instructions (Ardisam document 15734, which Ardisam files under the QuickFish 3iT and which cover 2-4 and 6-9 person pop-ups; we found no separate Outbreak manual) say: “DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME HEATERS IN YOUR ICE SHELTER.” They add that the fabric “MEETS CPAI-84 SPECIFICATIONS FOR FLAME RESISTANCE. IT IS NOT FIRE PROOF,” and that flame and heat sources must be kept away from the walls and roof. The instructions give no ventilation opening size. The QuickFish product pages describe the removable window panels as a way to “Adjust shelter ventilation”, and the Outbreak 450XDP adds two sealable duct ports for heaters “inside or outside the shelter, including diesel heaters”, plus a propane line port.
  • Otter. Its hub instructions cover set-up and take-down only, with no heater or ventilation guidance. Its FAQ says the fabrics are “water resistant NOT waterproof. This allows the canvas to breathe and reduce condensation when using internal heating sources in cold weather.” Each Vortex Pro hub has a propane hose port.
  • ThunderBay. Its 6-person page lists two ceiling vents; neither ThunderBay page we read gives heater or ventilation guidance.

None of these makers rates any heater as safe to use in its shelter, and we do not either. Follow the heater maker’s own manual; our tent heater guide quotes several heater manuals.

CPSC and CDC on carbon monoxide

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s camping guidance says people die every year from carbon monoxide (CO) from portable heaters, lanterns and stoves used inside tents, campers and vehicles, and: “Never use fuel-burning portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in enclosed areas such as tents, campers and vehicles.” Its winter safety tips recommend battery-operated CO alarms, tested monthly, and say never to leave a portable heater running unattended in a confined space.

The CDC lists the common symptoms of CO poisoning as “headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion”, warns that “People who are sleeping, drunk, or under the influence of other substances can die from CO poisoning before they have symptoms,” and recommends battery-operated or battery back-up CO detectors. Both agencies write mainly for homes and camping; the same reasoning applies on the ice. If anything in your shelter burns fuel, carry a battery CO alarm, keep vents open, and if anyone gets a headache, dizziness or nausea, turn the heater off and get everyone outside.

How We Chose These Shelters

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.

What each shelter had to show

  • A pop-up hub design (spring hubs, no sled frame): flip-over sled shelters are a separate category in the search results and in the ranking guides, so they are not picks here.
  • Maker-stated capacity, fishable area or footprint, and fabric, with “not published” where the maker gives none.
  • Stocked on Amazon, new and in stock when we checked, at or below the maker’s list price; where a retailer holds the buy box, the review names it.
  • An independent review or owner reports where we could find them, with the tested model named, or a plain note that the evidence is the maker’s specs.
Where the evidence comes from, what anglers on r/IceFishing say and shelters we left out

Where the evidence comes from

Outdoor Life tested the QuickFish 3i, the Outbreak 450XD and the Monster Lodge on Minnesota lakes, and lists the Vortex Pro Cabin on an Otter pro-staffer’s word. North American Outdoorsman ranks the Outbreak 450XDP, and BC Fishing Journal recommends the ThunderBay Ice Cube 3 without describing a hands-on test, so that pick is graded on ThunderBay’s specs. The Vortex Pro Lodge rests on owner reports; the QuickFish 6HD, the Vortex Pro Cabin, the Ice Cube and the ThunderBay 6 Person on their makers’ specs. Each review’s Evidence line says which version a source covered.

What anglers on r/IceFishing say

In the r/IceFishing thread on three-person shelters that ranked in the search, the top reply recommends a hub over a sled shelter for three people and warns that “if a shelter is advertised as a 3-man, it is really a 2-man – three could fit, sure, but not all three actively fishing.” It names the Eskimo Outbreak XD and Otter Vortex Pro series and praises their full, no-trip doors; another reply calls the Eskimo 3i “lightweight (compared to others) , affordable, and fishes three people pretty comfortably”. In a second thread, owners split between Otter, Eskimo, Clam and Frabill, and one owner sums up the trade-off with flip-overs: their hub takes about ten minutes to set up and ten to take down, their flip-over about a minute from walking to fishing.

Shelters we left out

Clam’s X-400, X-500, X-600, C-360, C-560 and C-890 hubs, Eskimo’s QuickFish 6i, 2i and FatFish 949i, and Frabill’s Bro Series hub were out of stock on Amazon at our check. Flip-over sled shelters such as the Clam Nanook XT and Eskimo Wide 1 XR are a different design and are not picks here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the best pop-up ice shelter?

It depends on your crew and how you get on the ice. Outdoor Life named the Eskimo Outbreak 450XD its Best Overall shelter and North American Outdoorsman names the current 450XDP its best overall; for two or three anglers on foot, Outdoor Life’s Best Value pick was the Eskimo QuickFish 3i. Check the maker’s capacity, fishable area and weight against how many people actually fish with you and how you haul the shelter.

Q. What is the best ice fishing shelter for 3 people?

Owners on r/IceFishing advise sizing up by one: a three-person label fits two anglers fishing comfortably. For three, look at the 48 sq ft Otter Vortex Pro Cabin, the 75 sq ft Eskimo Outbreak 450XDP or the 74 sq ft Otter Vortex Pro Lodge; the 34 sq ft QuickFish 3i suits two adults with gear, per Outdoor Life.

Q. What is the best one-person ice fishing shelter?

The one-person shelters in the ranking guides are flip-over sled shelters, which keep your gear in the sled; Outdoor Life covers several, including the Ice Runner Escape and Eskimo Wide 1 XR. Among the pop-up hubs here, the smallest are the QuickFish 3i and the ThunderBay Ice Cube 3-4 Man, each with 34 sq ft of fishable area per its maker.

Q. Are pop-up ice shelters warm?

Insulated hubs hold heat better than single-layer ones: Eskimo claims its IQ fabric is “35% warmer than a comparable non-insulated shelter” (its Amazon listing, basis not stated), and Otter and Eskimo both say their insulated fabrics reduce condensation. If you add a heater, follow its maker’s ventilation rules and carry a CO alarm.

Q. Can you use a heater in a pop-up ice shelter?

Eskimo’s instructions say “DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME HEATERS IN YOUR ICE SHELTER,” and Otter and ThunderBay give no heater guidance in what we read. If you run a heater, follow its own manual’s ventilation and clearance rules, keep it away from the fabric, and follow the CPSC: never use fuel-burning heaters while sleeping in enclosed spaces, and use a battery-operated CO alarm.

The bottom line

Final Verdict

For two or three anglers who walk out, the Eskimo QuickFish 3i (check price) is an insulated 34 sq ft hub at 34 lb that Outdoor Life named its Best Value. For a crew of four or five with a sled or truck, the Eskimo Outbreak 450XDP (check price) packs a 75 sq ft floor into 58 inches and adds heater duct ports, and the Otter Vortex Pro Lodge (check price) offers 74 sq ft over five sides with a 79-inch ceiling. Two or three anglers who want a five-sided layout can look at the Otter Vortex Pro Cabin (check price).

For groups, the Eskimo QuickFish 6HD (check price) seats six on 71 sq ft with an ice-level door, and the Otter Vortex Pro Monster Lodge (check price) gives 132 sq ft for six to eight or an ice camp. On a budget, the ThunderBay Ice Cube 3-4 Man (check price) is a non-insulated wind block and the ThunderBay 6 Person Insulated (check price) covers a group with fewer published specs. Whichever you choose, keep vents open with any fuel-burning heater, carry a battery CO alarm, and follow the CPSC: never run one while you sleep.
