Best Blaze Orange Hunting Vests: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

For a zip-front vest with pockets at an entry-level price, look at the Allen Company Deluxe Blaze Orange Vest; for an orange camo pattern that Gamehide says is over 50% solid orange, the Gamehide Quiet Deer Blaze Orange Camo Safety Vest; and for a warm fleece layer that is itself blaze orange, the SITKA Alpha Fleece Vest.

Our verdict

Our Top Picks

A blaze orange vest is a common way to add the orange a state may require during hunting season. The differences that matter are practical: whether the orange is solid or a camo print, whether it zips or straps on over a jacket, what the pockets hold, and which size you get. We compared eight vests that Amazon stocks, from a one-size safety overlay to fleece vests in blaze orange, using the makers’ own figures and saying where they publish none.

Every pick links to one exact size. Each review names that size, the range the maker sells, and how the maker says it fits. None of the makers here publishes a garment weight for a named size, so this guide gives no weights and does not compare them.

How We Chose Blaze Orange Vests

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation and owner reports (one owner review, two Reddit threads); we found no independent test and have not tested these products ourselves

What counted as a blaze orange hunting vest

  • A vest sold in blaze or hunter orange, solid or orange camo, by a hunting brand, in adult sizes.
  • Amazon showed the exact size and colour in stock and new, with a live offer, when we checked on 2026-10-22.
  • One vest, not a multi-pack, and not a hi-vis work vest or a cargo vest that happens to come in orange.
  • A mix of types: safety overlays that go on over a jacket, pocket and game-bag vests, and warm vests that are themselves orange.
  • Allen’s basic hook-and-loop vest and the Badlands B.O.V. vest were out of the running: Amazon showed the youth size of the Allen in stock but no adult size, and the Badlands in L/XL was not in stock when we checked.
Sizes, specs and where they come from and what hunters ask for in the threads

Sizes, specs and where they come from

Specs come from each maker’s product page where one exists: Allen, Gamehide (Frontloader), Vortex, Drake and SITKA. Hunters Specialties’ product page refused our requests, and we found no Gamehide page for the Quiet Deer vest, so their figures come from the makers’ own Amazon listings and are labelled that way. ScentBlocker’s own page carries little detail, so its fabric and size chart come from its Amazon listing, which Blocker Outdoors, the brand, sells through. Where a maker’s figure and Amazon’s feature list disagree, we give the maker’s figure.

No maker publishes a garment weight for a named size. Gamehide gives a garment weight for the Frontloader without saying which size was weighed, and the figures Drake and SITKA give are fabric weights, so we leave weight out.

We found no independent editorial test of any linked vest. Two list pages that rank for this search give weights, square inches and test results that the makers do not publish, and one is written by a garment manufacturer, so we did not use them. Each review’s evidence line says what its figures rest on.

What hunters ask for in the threads

The ranking r/Hunting thread starts with a plain request: “I just need a blaze orange vest for gun hunting deer that has at least 2 good pockets up front and is durable.” Replies split between premium vests and low-cost overlays, and one owner pointed at fleece: “I have a blaze orange fleece vest from Columbia that’s decent quality and holding up well. Much better than your typical cheap blaze stuff, assuming you don’t mind that it’s a warm layer.”

Women hunters and hikers report a narrower choice. In a 2025 r/Hunting thread, the poster wrote, “I’m noticing a lot of brands only make blaze clothing for men, even the women’s equivalents of the same item don’t come in orange!” We found no women’s-cut vest among the eight, so check the maker’s chest measurements rather than a letter size.

Detailed Reviews

Hunters Specialties Safety Vest, One-Size Safety Overlay

One-Size Safety Overlay
Hunters Specialties Safety Vest - Blaze Orange High…

Hunters Specialties Safety Vest

Adult

hunters who already own a camo jacket they like and want orange over it at entry-level cost, or a spare vest for a guest.

$6.84 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Hunters Specialties’ Safety Vest is a plain overlay: a blaze orange vest that goes on over whatever you already wear. The maker’s Amazon listing gives the Adult size “more than 700 square inches of blaze-orange material,” with “non-restricting elastic side straps and an adjustable front closure,” and says it is “Constructed from a quiet fabric that minimizes noise during movement” and is machine washable. The listing does not name the closure type or the fibre, and lists no pockets.

The linked size is Adult, a single adjustable size. Hunters Specialties also sells a Youth size and a Magnum size; the listing says the Magnum “accommodates larger sizes up to 4X” and has over 1,200 square inches of orange. Amazon.com sells and ships the Adult vest.

Verdict

a low-cost orange overlay to keep in the truck or put over a camo jacket; it carries nothing, so pair it with a pack or a jacket with pockets.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Hunters Specialties’ Amazon listing (the maker’s copy; its own product page refused our requests).

Allen Company Deluxe Blaze Orange Safety & Hunting Vest…

    Large

deer hunters who want an inexpensive zip-front vest with pockets for a few small items over their jacket.

$21.98 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Allen’s Deluxe vest adds a zipper and pockets to the overlay idea. Allen’s page says, “The Deluxe Blaze Orange Hunting Vest by Allen has over 600 square inches of highly-visible hunting-compliant fabric. Made from durable polyester, the vest has a heavy-duty front zipper closure, plus two large pockets, great for keeping essentials close by when hiking to your hunting spot.” “Hunting-compliant” is Allen’s own wording; state rules differ, so check yours (see the buying guide).

The linked size is Large, which Amazon’s listing says fits chests up to 48 inches. Amazon’s variant table runs from Small to XX-Large, but Small and X-Large were out of stock and XX-Large not yet available when we checked. Amazon.com sells it.

    Verdict

a zip-front orange vest with two pockets at an entry-level price, for hunters who want a few essentials on the vest itself.

Gamehide Quiet Deer Blaze Orange Camo Safety Vest, Orange Camo Safety Vest

      Orange Camo Safety Vest
Gamehide Quiet Deer Hunting Blaze Orange Camo Safety Vest…

      Gamehide Quiet Deer Camo

      Large

hunters in a state that allows orange camo who want a pattern rather than solid orange over their layers.

$29.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Gamehide’s Quiet Deer vest is printed in Naked North, an orange camo pattern, rather than solid orange. Gamehide’s Amazon listing says it has over 500 inches of blaze orange coverage and is over 50% solid blaze orange, which Gamehide says is to meet state regulations for blaze orange camo. That is the maker’s claim. Some states set a minimum share of orange for camo, and some want solid orange, so check your state’s wording before you rely on a camo vest.

The listing describes the cut as “Slightly oversized to go over your hunitng clothing and not restrict movement,” and says the vest is deliberately not waterproof, because “Waterproofing an external vest can cause an “echoing” effect when the temps drop.” It names no fabric, closure or pockets. We found no product page for this vest on Gamehide’s own site, so these figures are from the maker’s Amazon listing. The linked size is Large; Amazon carries Large to 4X-Large. The seller is Core Resources Inc, Gamehide’s company, and Amazon ships it.

      Verdict

an orange camo overlay for hunters whose state accepts camo orange and who want a broken pattern over a solid block of colour.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Gamehide’s Amazon listing (the maker’s copy; no Gamehide product page found).

Specs: Gamehide Quiet Deer Blaze Orange Camo Safety Vest, Large, Naked North Blaze Orange Camo

        Pros

        • Orange camo pattern that Gamehide states is over 50% solid blaze orange
        • Cut slightly oversized to fit over hunting clothes, per the maker
        • Sizes up to 4X-Large

        Cons

        • Camo orange is not accepted everywhere; check your state’s wording
        • Fabric, closure and pockets are not published
        • Specs rest on the maker’s Amazon listing; no Gamehide product page found

        Gamehide Frontloader

        Large

upland and small-game hunters who want shells and a harvest carried on a blaze orange vest.

$39.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Gamehide calls the Front Loader a “lightweight, upland and small game vest.” Its page lists “Large Front Cargo Pockets with Snap Closures,” a “Blood-Proof Rear Game Bag,” “External Shotgun Shell Loops” and “Quilted Shoulder Patches for Right or Left-Handed Shooters,” in 100% polyester. It is built for bird and small-game hunters who carry shells and a harvest. Gamehide publishes no orange area for it.

The linked size is Large in Blaze Orange; Gamehide sells Small to 4X, and Amazon carries Medium to 4X-Large. One owner on Gamehide’s site wrote, “Looks great, well made. Sizes run large XL may be almost 2 XL.” That comment is about an XL, and it is one owner, but it is a reason to check the chest measurement before sizing up for layers. Core Resources Inc, Gamehide’s company, sells it on Amazon.

        Verdict

a solid orange vest with cargo pockets, shell loops and a rear game bag, for upland and small-game days.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. an owner review on Gamehide’s product page: Front Loader Vest, XL (colour not stated).

          • Quilted shoulder patches for left- or right-handed shooters

          Cons

          • Closure type not published

          X-Large

hunters who want a stretchy, zip-front orange shell with pockets to wear over their layers.

$49.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Vortex makes optics, and the Ridgeway is one of its blaze orange vests. Vortex’s page says, “Stretch fabric moves with you from the tree stand to stalks, and a water repellant DWR finish works overtime to keep you dry. Snap-close pockets provide plenty of space for extra ammo and your favorite snacks.” It lists 92% nylon and 8% spandex, a zip front, and a cut “Sized to Fit Over Your Hunting Clothes,” and Vortex covers it with its “UNLIMITED. UNCONDITIONAL. LIFETIME WARRANTY.” Vortex publishes no orange area.

The linked size is X-Large; Vortex’s size chart on the vest page gives XL as a 45 to 47 in chest and runs from XS to 5XL, while Amazon carried Small, Large, X-Large and XX-Large. We linked the X-Large because the Large showed one left. The Amazon seller is Gritr, a third-party outdoor retailer, and Amazon ships it. Vortex’s own store showed the vest out of stock when we checked.

          Verdict

a stretch, water-repellent orange shell with snap pockets for hunters who move between the stand and stalking.

SITKA’s Alpha Fleece Vest is a fleece vest sold in solid blaze orange among other colours. SITKA’s page says, “A double weave stretch fleece handles rugged environments and gusts with ease while a DWR coating mitigates unexpected moisture during the hunt.” It lists “Durable 280-gram, 4-way stretch double weave STORMFLEECE,” seamless shoulders for wearing a pack, two zippered pockets placed to stay usable with a pack belt, mesh-backed pockets for venting and an internal zippered chest pocket. SITKA publishes no orange area.

The linked size is Large in Blaze Orange; SITKA sells Medium to 3XL in a “Standard Fit,” which it says is designed to accommodate layering. On Amazon the X-Large in orange was not in stock when we checked. SITKA Gear, the brand, sells it on Amazon, and Amazon ships it.

Buying Guide: Choosing a Blaze Orange Vest

State blaze orange rules differ: check yours

Blaze orange rules are set by each state, and they differ on how many square inches you need, whether it must be visible from all sides, whether a hat is also required, whether orange camo counts, and in which seasons and on which lands it applies. Some states also accept blaze pink. Read your state wildlife agency’s current regulations for the season and the land you hunt; nothing here is legal advice, and no vest in this guide is presented as meeting every state’s rule.

Two examples, in the agencies’ own words. Pennsylvania (Game Commission): “Generally, when orange is required, hunters must wear 250 square inches of fluorescent orange that’s visible from 360 degrees on the head, chest, and back. A hat and vest satisfy this requirement.” Minnesota (DNR): “Blaze orange or blaze pink camouflage patterns are allowed and must be at least 50 percent blaze orange or pink within each square foot.”

Where a maker states an orange area or a compliance aim, the reviews quote it as the maker’s claim: Hunters Specialties and Allen publish square inches, and Gamehide (Quiet Deer) gives “over 500 inches” without saying square; the other five publish no area. Picks: Hunters Specialties Safety Vest, Allen Company Deluxe Blaze Orange Vest, Gamehide Quiet Deer Blaze Orange Camo Safety Vest.

                  Solid orange or orange camo

Solid orange is the plain case. Orange camo adds a pattern to the orange, but whether it counts depends on your state, as the Minnesota example shows. Gamehide states its Quiet Deer pattern is over 50% solid orange; ScentBlocker’s reversible vest has a solid orange side and a camo side, and the camo side is not orange. Our deer hunting camo guide covers camo outerwear, including an orange camo parka. Picks: Gamehide Quiet Deer Blaze Orange Camo Safety Vest, ScentBlocker Evolve Reversible Vest.

Sizing a vest over your layers

A vest usually goes on over a jacket, so size it for the layers you will wear under it. Hunters Specialties sells one adjustable Adult size with a Magnum option, Gamehide cuts the Quiet Deer slightly oversized, and Vortex says the Ridgeway is sized to fit over hunting clothes. Where a maker publishes chest measurements (Allen’s Large, Vortex’s chart, ScentBlocker’s chart), use them rather than your shirt size. One owner reports Gamehide’s Frontloader runs large. The fleece vests (Drake, SITKA) are layers in their own right, so size them like a jacket.

                  Pockets, game bags and warmth

Decide what the vest has to carry. The Hunters Specialties overlay lists no pockets, the Allen has two, the Vortex has snap pockets, and the Gamehide Frontloader adds shell loops and a rear game bag for birds and small game. If you sit for hours in the cold, a warm vest in orange (ScentBlocker, Drake, SITKA) can replace a layer. Glassing from a stand or ridge? Our guides to binoculars for bow hunting and binocular tripods for hunting cover what goes in those pockets or on a pack. Picks: Gamehide Frontloader Vest, Drake Midweight Nova Silencer Vest, SITKA Alpha Fleece Vest.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

                  Q. Is an orange vest enough for hunting?

It depends on your state and season. Pennsylvania’s Game Commission, for example, says “A hat and vest satisfy this requirement,” which means a vest alone may not; other states set their own amounts and placement. Check your state wildlife agency’s rules for the season you hunt.

                  Q. When do you need to wear blaze orange?

Each state sets the seasons and places where orange applies, commonly firearm deer seasons, and some states extend it to small-game seasons or to anyone on certain public lands. Your state wildlife agency’s regulations list the dates. Pennsylvania’s Game Commission adds: “Even when not required, the use of orange is strongly recommended, especially while moving.”

                  Q. Does blaze orange camo count?

In some states, within limits. Minnesota’s DNR allows blaze orange or pink camo that is at least 50 percent orange or pink within each square foot; other states require solid orange. Gamehide says its Quiet Deer vest is over 50% solid orange, which is the maker’s claim, not a ruling for your state.

                  Q. Can deer see blaze orange?

Our guide to hunting camo patterns and deer vision covers how deer see colour and pattern, with its sources. This guide makes no claim about it.

                  Q. Should I buy a blaze orange vest or a jacket?

A vest goes on over whatever jacket suits the weather, so one vest covers early and late season. An orange jacket or parka does the job of two layers on cold days. The fleece vests here (Drake, SITKA) sit between the two: orange and warm, worn as the outer layer.

                  Q. What size blaze orange vest should I get?

Size for what you will wear under it. Check the maker’s chest measurements where they publish them, and note that the overlays here are cut to go over clothing. Each review above states the size we link and the range the maker sells.

                  The bottom line

                  Final Verdict

For a zip-front vest with two pockets at an entry-level price, the Allen Company Deluxe Blaze Orange Vest (check price) in Large lists over 600 square inches of orange. For orange camo, the Gamehide Quiet Deer Blaze Orange Camo Safety Vest (check price) carries Gamehide’s statement that it is over 50% solid orange; check that camo orange counts in your state. For a warm layer that is itself orange, the SITKA Alpha Fleece Vest (check price) pairs 280-gram double-weave fleece with pack-friendly pockets. The other five cover a one-size overlay, an upland game-bag vest, a stretch DWR shell, a reversible insulated vest and a sherpa fleece vest, and each review names its linked size and its sources. Whatever you choose, check your state wildlife agency’s blaze orange rules first.
