Hot Tents for Winter Camping with a Wood Stove: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

For a drive-up winter base camp, the Kodiak Canvas 12×12 Cabin Lodge Tent SR is a cotton-canvas cabin with a 5-inch stove jack that Kodiak rates for four people with a stove running; for a group, the White Duck Regatta Bell Tent 16′ adds a silicone-coated jack with 5- and 6-inch pre-cuts in a 16-foot bell; to carry or sled the tent in, the OneTigris Rock Fortress is a nylon tipi that its Amazon listing puts at 9.2 lb.

Our verdict

Top Picks: Hot Tents at a Glance

A tent stove is only half of a winter hot-tent setup. The other half is a tent built to take one: a stove jack (a heat-resistant collar the chimney pipe passes through), room to keep the stove clear of the walls, and vents to let air in. This guide compares eight tents with a stove jack that Amazon stocks, from heavy cotton-canvas cabins to nylon tipis you can carry or pull on a sled, and puts each maker’s own stove-use rules next to the specs. Wood stoves in tents carry real fire and carbon monoxide (CO) risks, so read the safety section before you light one.

Which Hot Tent for Which Winter Camp

A canvas base camp you drive to

Cotton canvas breathes, which cuts condensation, and it is what the heavier wall and bell tents here are made of. The trade is weight: Kodiak lists its 12×12 Cabin Lodge at 97 lb packed, and White Duck boxes its 16-foot Regatta at 83 lb. Both need a vehicle and two people to pitch. Kodiak’s manual names the stove it approves for the tent; White Duck pre-marks its jack for 5- and 6-inch pipe. If you are new to tent types, our guide to types of camping tents explains how cabin, bell and tipi shapes differ.

Carrying or sledding the tent in

Nylon and polyester tipis and cabins weigh a fraction of canvas, which is why winter backpackers and pulk haulers use them. The trade is heat tolerance: Danchel says plainly that its nylon “is not fireproof”, and Pomoly writes that a stove jack “does not mean the entire surrounding fabric is fireproof”. These tents rely on a spark arrestor, a small stove and careful placement. OneTigris lists the Smokey HUT at 5.3 lb with pole and floor, the Rock Fortress listing gives 9.2 lb, and Pomoly’s Chalet 70 Max listing gives 12.3 lb.

Picks: OneTigris Smokey HUT, OneTigris Rock Fortress, POMOLY Chalet 70 Max

A family or group camp with a floor

Families who drive in often want a sewn-in floor and standing room more than low weight. KingCamp’s cabin and Danchel’s yurt both come with a floor and stand over six feet tall inside, and KingCamp includes a fire-resistant mat to go under the stove. Expect a cold floor in winter whatever you choose; our waterproof family tent guide covers floors and fly ratings for the rest of the year, and the festival tent guide covers quick-pitch tents for summer use.

Kodiak Canvas 12×12 Cabin Lodge Tent SR, Stove-Ready Canvas Cabin

Kodiak Canvas 12x12 Cabin Lodge Tent SR (Stove Ready)

Kodiak Cabin Lodge SR

Stove-Ready Canvas Cabin

Hunters and families with a vehicle who want a stand-up canvas base camp with a stove for four and will follow Kodiak's stove rules.

$999.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 00:16 UTC

Verdict

A 12 x 12 ft cotton-canvas cabin with a 5-inch stove jack and 4-foot vertical walls for drive-up winter and hunting camps, rated by Kodiak for eight people, or four with a stove.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Backwoods Pursuit: 12×12 Cabin Lodge, model year not stated.

Kodiak Canvas builds the Cabin Lodge SR (model 6170) from Hydra-Shield cotton duck canvas, 10 oz in the ceiling and 8.5 oz in the walls, over a 1-inch galvanized steel frame, with a 13.5 oz vinyl floor with welded seams. The peak is 7.5 ft and the walls rise 4 ft straight up. Kodiak lists “Capacity: 8-person (4-person when stove is used)” and a “5” Stove Jack”, with the stove sold separately, and calls it all-season, “but not designed for extreme winter mountaineering or heavy snow accumulations”. It publishes no hydrostatic-head figure for the canvas. Kodiak lists it at $999.99.

Kodiak’s owner’s manual for model 6170 (Kodiak’s PDF, marked 0719, hosted by the dealer Competitive Edge Products) gives eleven stove rules, among them: “Use a spark arrester on the stovepipe”, “Make sure to leave a window, vents, and/or a door open when the stove is burning”, “Use a battery-operated, combo carbon monoxide / smoke detector (sold separately)”, and “Someone should always tend to a stove that is hot and in use. This person should be a responsible, competent adult that is awake, alert, and sober.” It approves one stove: the Colorado Cylinder Stove Spruce model with a 5×6 nested stovepipe. Kodiak’s safety page adds that “caution and care are still required to ensure the safety of all tent occupants.”

Backwoods Pursuit used a 12×12 Cabin Lodge over a year and a half, down to the low single digits, with the Colorado Cylinder Spruce package Kodiak recommended. Four people fit with two XL cots, two foam pads, the stove, chairs and a cooler; with four XL cots, the reviewers write, it would be a tighter fit. The review does not give a model year.

Specs (12×12 ft, model 6170):

  • Linked model: Kodiak Canvas 12×12 Cabin Lodge Tent SR (Stove Ready), sold by Kodiak Canvas Official Store
  • Capacity: 8 person; 4 person when a stove is used (Kodiak)
  • Floor and height: 12 x 12 ft; 7.5 ft peak, 4 ft walls (Kodiak)
  • Packed weight: about 97 lb with poles, stakes and bags (Kodiak)
  • Fabric: Hydra-Shield cotton duck canvas, 10 oz ceiling, 8.5 oz walls; 13.5 oz vinyl floor (Kodiak)
  • Waterproof rating: not published
  • Stove jack: 5 in; material not stated; approved stove Colorado Cylinder Spruce with 5×6 nested pipe (Kodiak manual)
  • Season rating: all-season, not for extreme winter mountaineering or heavy snow loads (Kodiak)

Pros

  • Cotton-canvas cabin with a factory 5-inch stove jack and 4 ft vertical walls, per Kodiak
  • Kodiak’s manual names an approved stove and pipe, so there is no guessing on fit
  • Backwoods Pursuit used one through a year and a half of snow, rain and single-digit cold

Cons

  • 97 lb packed and two adults to set up, per Kodiak
  • Kodiak cuts the rating to four people when a stove is in use
  • No waterproof rating published; Kodiak says it is not for heavy snow accumulations

Who should buy it

Hunters and families with a vehicle who want a stand-up canvas base camp with a stove for four and will follow Kodiak’s stove rules.

Regatta Bell 16'

Water Repellent, Sandstone Beige

Groups and families with a vehicle who want a tall canvas bell that takes common 5- or 6-inch stoves, and who will bring sturdier stakes for frozen ground.

$950.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 00:16 UTC

Verdict

A 16-foot cotton-canvas bell tent with a silicone-coated stove jack pre-cut for 5- or 6-inch pipe, for groups at a drive-up camp; White Duck sells a flame-retardant fabric version too.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Backwoods Pursuit: 16.5 ft Regatta Bell, fabric option not stated.

White Duck builds the 16′ Regatta from its DYNATEK canvas on a galvanized steel center pole, with a sewn-in 7.5 oz PE groundsheet, four roof vents and a “Pre-installed heat resistant silicone-coated stove jack with a 5-inch pre-cut pattern” (its spec table gives “5” & 6″ pre-cuts”). The center height is 9 ft 8 in and the walls 2 ft 7 in. White Duck rates it to sleep 8 camping or 4 glamping, and boxes the Water Repellent version at 83 lb with groundsheet, poles and tool kit (its Amazon listing gives 70 lb). It publishes no hydrostatic-head figure. We link the Water Repellent fabric in Sandstone Beige; White Duck’s Amazon listing says the Regatta is “also available in a flame-retardant version for 4-season camping with wood stove”, and White Duck’s store sells that Fire Water Repellent option, which we could not identify on Amazon. White Duck lists the Water Repellent 16′ in Sandstone Beige at $950.

White Duck’s stove safety guide says “you should never leave a tent stove unattended”, that “carrying a portable carbon monoxide detector will be your best defense against the invisible gas”, and adds: “It’s also imperative that the tent you choose is made from high-quality fabrics that have been treated with fire-resistant coatings.”

Backwoods Pursuit tested a 16.5-foot Regatta Bell (fabric option not stated) in the upper 20s down to the low single digits: seven people fit on foam pads with a stove, chairs and a cooler, or four on cots. The reviewers found a large Winnerwell Woodlander Double View “a bit on the small side” for this tent, and the stock stake pins bent “WAY too easily” in rocky or frozen ground.

Specs (16′ / 5 m, Water Repellent, Sandstone Beige):

  • Linked model: White Duck Regatta Bell Tent 16.5′ (5M), Water Repellent, Sandstone Beige, sold by White Duck Outdoors
  • Capacity: sleeps 8 camping, 4 glamping (White Duck)
  • Floor and height: 16 ft 5 in (5 m) across; 9 ft 8 in center, 2 ft 7 in walls (White Duck)
  • Packed weight: 83 lb boxed with groundsheet, poles and tool kit (White Duck); 70 lb (White Duck’s Amazon listing)
  • Fabric: DYNATEK cotton canvas, Water Repellent; sewn-in PE groundsheet (White Duck)
  • Waterproof rating: not published
  • Stove jack: heat-resistant silicone-coated, 5 and 6 in pre-cuts (White Duck)

Pros

  • Silicone-coated jack pre-marked for 5- or 6-inch pipe, per White Duck
  • Sleeps 8, per White Duck; Backwoods Pursuit fit seven on pads with a stove
  • Sewn-in floor and four roof vents, per White Duck

Cons

  • The fabric we link is water repellent, not the flame-retardant version White Duck offers for stove use
  • 83 lb boxed, per White Duck
  • Backwoods Pursuit found the stock stake pins too weak for frozen ground

Who should buy it

Rock Fortress

Coyote Brown

Winter campers who haul by sled or carry a short way and want a stove tent, paired with OneTigris's own stove.

$259.98 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 00:16 UTC

Verdict

A 12.4-foot nylon tipi with a stove jacket, snow skirt and two doors for winter campers who carry or sled their shelter, with a jack sized for OneTigris’s own stove pipe.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. BushcraftUSA forum: Rock Fortress.

OneTigris makes the Rock Fortress from “70D silicone coated nylon fabric with 3000mm waterproof rating”, with one center pole, two top vents and a wind-proof skirt. It is 12.4 ft across and 7.8 ft tall, with “capacity up to 6 person”, and no inner tent. The jack is the key limit: OneTigris says it “was pre-cut with 3.3” by 3.3” opening and are only compatible with OneTigris TIGER ROAR Camping Stove System and similarly sized stove pipes.” Its warning reads, in part, “Use of a stove in this tent is at your own risk.” It tells owners to “always use CO detectors” and keep air flow going, and says never to leave the tent “while the wood stove is in use.” It also says to clear snow and ice off the tent, and not to run anything that burns “volatile fuel such as gasoline/alcohol/butane” inside. Its Amazon listing gives 9.2 lb. OneTigris lists it at $289.99.

We found no independent test. In a BushcraftUSA owner thread, an owner who ran a wood stove in it on a night he expected to drop to 5 degrees wrote that “The tent seems well made despite some of the reviews on Amazon,” woke to 24 degrees inside the tent, felt drafts at the base until more snow weighed down the skirt, and found one small ember hole next to the stove jack. The tent was sold at our check by OTG Camping Gear, a third-party seller shipping from Amazon, on a listing Amazon marks as an international product sold from abroad.

Specs (Coyote Brown):

  • Linked model: OneTigris Rock Fortress Hot Tent, Coyote Brown, sold by OTG Camping Gear, shipped by Amazon
  • Capacity: up to 6 (OneTigris)
  • Floor and height: 12.4 ft (3.8 m) across; 7.8 ft (2.4 m) tall (OneTigris)
  • Packed weight: 9.2 lb (OneTigris’s Amazon listing); packed 22.8 x 7.8 x 7.8 in
  • Fabric: 70D silicone-coated nylon; no floor or inner tent included (OneTigris)
  • Waterproof rating: 3000 mm (OneTigris)
  • Stove jack: 3.3 x 3.3 in opening, for OneTigris Tiger Roar or similar pipe; material not stated (OneTigris)

Pros

  • 9.2 lb tipi with a snow skirt and two top vents, per OneTigris and its Amazon listing
  • Two doors and a 7.8 ft peak, per OneTigris
  • An owner who used it with a wood stove in snow wrote that it seems well made

Cons

  • The 3.3-inch jack is cut for OneTigris’s Tiger Roar or similarly sized pipe, per OneTigris
  • Floorless single-wall nylon; the owner found drafts at the base and an ember hole by the jack
  • No floor; sold by a third-party seller from abroad at our check

Who should buy it

Smokey HUT

Coyote Brown

Solo winter backpackers who want a light stove tent and will run a small backpacking stove with a spark arrestor.

$139.98 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 00:16 UTC

Verdict

A 5.3 lb single-pole nylon tipi with a stove jack, snow skirts and a half floor for solo winter backpackers who accept crouching headroom.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, previous generation. Top-Notch Outdoor: earlier floorless Smokey HUT.

OneTigris’s Amazon listing (the version we link) describes 20D PU-coated nylon with heat-taped seams and a 2000 mm rating, a detachable 75D polyester floor mat also rated 2000 mm, two doors, snow skirts, a 5.9 ft pole, “a pre-installed stove jack”, and “5.3 lbs (2.4 kg) with tent pole and ground sheet included.” It is 11 ft across. OneTigris’s own store page describes a Smokey HUT at about 4.4 lb with a floor mat sized for one camper, so the two descriptions differ; we give the Amazon listing’s figures for the version we link. The store page warns: “Do NOT start fires within/under the inner and outer tents, and keep all flame and heat sources away from the tent fabric.” OneTigris does not publish the jack size. OneTigris’s list price for this version was not published in what we could read.

Top-Notch Outdoor reviewed the earlier, floorless 2.6 lb Smokey HUT, which it rated 9/10 for weather resistance with a 5’2″ peak, and notes that it has not pitched the current version with the floor. Treat its findings as a guide to the shape and fabric, not to this exact tent.

Specs (with detachable floor, Coyote Brown):

  • Linked model: OneTigris Smokey HUT Hot Tent with Stove Jack and Detachable Floor, Coyote Brown, sold by OneTigris, shipped by Amazon
  • Capacity: 2 person (OneTigris’s Amazon listing); floor mat sized for 1 (OneTigris store)
  • Floor and height: 11 ft (336 cm) across; 5.9 ft (180 cm) pole (OneTigris’s Amazon listing)
  • Packed weight: 5.3 lb with pole and floor (OneTigris’s Amazon listing); 4.4 lb (OneTigris store, version described differently)
  • Fabric: 20D PU-coated nylon; 75D polyester floor mat (OneTigris’s Amazon listing)
  • Waterproof rating: 2000 mm fly and floor (OneTigris)
  • Stove jack: pre-installed; size and material not published

Pros

  • 5.3 lb with pole and floor, per OneTigris’s Amazon listing
  • Stove jack, snow skirts and two doors in a single-pole tipi
  • 2000 mm rating on the fly and the floor mat, per OneTigris

Cons

  • 5.9 ft pole: you crouch inside, as Top-Notch Outdoor found on the earlier version
  • The independent review covers the earlier floorless version, not this one
  • OneTigris does not publish the jack size, so check your stove pipe against it before buying

Who should buy it

Verdict

An 11.2 x 7.9 ft cabin with a TC polycotton roof, polyester walls, a floor and a fire-resistant stove jack and mat, for families who drive in and want 6.9 ft of headroom.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: KingCamp.

KingCamp’s Amazon listing (part KT2626) describes a TC poly-cotton roof, ripstop polyester sidewalls and a 210D Oxford floor with a PU 3000 mm coating, an 11.2 x 7.9 ft layout with a 6.9 ft center height, two doors, two mesh windows, roof ventilation, an AC port, and “a fire-resistant stove jack and fireproof mat”. It rates the tent for 6-8 people and lists 15 kg. KingCamp’s own page for its Mountain In C5 cabin gives the same dimensions and fabrics (a 210g TC roof rated 450 mm, 210T polyester walls and a 210D Oxford floor at PU 3000 mm, 16 mm steel poles and a 74 x 40 cm fire-resistant ground cloth) under a different part number (KT2726) and a capacity of 5-6. The sources differ on capacity, so plan on the lower figure with a stove inside. KingCamp’s pages do not publish the stove-jack size or written stove-use rules. KingCamp’s list price for part KT2626 was not published in what we could read.

Pros

  • Fire-resistant stove jack and a fire-resistant mat in the box, per KingCamp
  • Breathable TC polycotton roof

Cons

  • KingCamp’s listing and its C5 page disagree on capacity (6-8 vs 5-6)

An 8.2 x 7.55 ft polyester cabin for two to four with a stove jack and a built-in silicone-and-fiberglass mat, for campers who carry a short way or drive in.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: POMOLY.

POMOLY’s Amazon listing (Pomoly’s own site blocked our reader) describes the Chalet 70 Max as 8.2 x 7.55 x 5.91 ft, for “2 to 4 adults”, made of 70D ripstop polyester “with a waterproof rating of up to 2500mm”, on two 7001 aluminum poles with 14 stakes, and with “an integrated fire-resistant ground mat made of silicone and fiberglass fabric”. It lists 12.3 lb and a stove jack in the box; Pomoly does not publish the jack’s size for the Max in what we could read. Pomoly’s Chalet 70 guide, written for the smaller sibling, says “A stove jack is designed to isolate the hot chimney from the tent fabric. It does not mean the entire surrounding fabric is fireproof”, warns “Never Assume the Stove Is Safe Because the Tent Is a Hot Tent”, and notes that “Carbon monoxide is odorless and cannot be reliably detected by human senses.” Pomoly’s list price was not published in what we could read.

Cons

  • 5.91 ft tall, per Pomoly, so taller adults stoop
  • Polyester needs care around sparks; Pomoly’s own guide says the fabric around the jack is not fireproof
  • Jack size not published for the Max; no independent test found

Verdict

A 16.4-foot bell tent with 55-inch side walls, a TC polycotton roof and a stove jack, for groups at a dry-weather or snowy base camp; the maker says not to stay in it through overnight rain.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: TOMOUNT.

TOMOUNT’s Amazon listing (TOMOUNT’s own store does not list this model) describes a 16.4 ft diameter, a 9.18 ft peak and 55-inch side walls on eight poles, a roof of “TC cotton canvas (65% polyester 35% cotton)”, walls of 210D Oxford and a detachable 600D Oxford floor, with “PU3000mm keeps you dry”. The roof has no PU coating, and the listing says: “please don’t stay in the rain overnight.” It says that “in winter, it keeps heat inside the tent”, lists 55.1 lb, and includes a stove jack whose size it does not publish. The listing gives no stove-use instructions, so follow your stove maker’s. TOMOUNT’s list price for this listing was not published in what we could read. The tent was sold at our check by Travelcool, a third-party seller shipping from Amazon.

We found no independent test of this tent; the evidence is TOMOUNT’s listing.

Running a Wood Stove in a Tent: What the Makers and CPSC Say

Each maker’s stove rules

A stove jack is a way out for the chimney, not a guarantee. Here is what each maker writes about running a stove in its tent:

  • Kodiak Canvas (manual, model 6170): approved stove only (Colorado Cylinder Spruce, 5×6 nested pipe); “Use a spark arrester on the stovepipe”; secure the jack flap away from the hot pipe; burn only firewood; keep the stove off the walls; leave a window, vents or a door open; “Do not allow stove or stovepipe to become orange or red hot”; use a non-flammable stove mat; a battery-operated combo CO and smoke detector at the ceiling; a working fire extinguisher inside; an adult “that is awake, alert, and sober” tending a hot stove; “In the event of strong winds, do not use the stove.”
  • White Duck: “never leave a tent stove unattended”; ventilate; use a stove mat; carry a portable CO detector; choose fabric “treated with fire-resistant coatings”.
  • OneTigris Rock Fortress: “Use of a stove in this tent is at your own risk”; “always use CO detectors”; never leave the tent “while the wood stove is in use”; 3.3-inch jack for the Tiger Roar or similar pipe.
  • OneTigris Smokey HUT: “keep all flame and heat sources away from the tent fabric.”
  • Pomoly: the jack “does not mean the entire surrounding fabric is fireproof”; “Never Assume the Stove Is Safe Because the Tent Is a Hot Tent”.
  • Danchel: “Material is not fireproof”; cut the jack to your pipe, under 8 inches.
  • KingCamp and TOMOUNT: no written stove-use rules in the pages we read; KingCamp includes a fire-resistant mat. Follow your stove maker’s instructions.

A CO alarm and fresh air

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says: “People die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning from the use of portable camping heaters, lanterns, or stoves inside tents, campers, and vehicles.” It lists the symptoms as “headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, and confusion”, warns that the risk rises at high altitude, and advises seeing a doctor if anyone develops cold or flu-like symptoms while camping. The CDC advises installing “battery-operated or battery back-up CO detectors near every sleeping area in your home” and says “Don’t cook or burn anything on a stove or fireplace that isn’t vented.” Both write about homes or camping in general, not about wood stoves in hot tents. Kodiak and OneTigris require CO detectors in their own tents. For heating a tent without a fire, see our camping heater guide, which covers the same CO warnings for propane heaters.

Sparks, embers and the floor

Canvas and synthetic fabrics both burn. Kodiak’s manual asks for a spark arrester and a non-flammable mat under the stove; Outdoor Life’s tester found the White Duck Regatta’s tarp floor was “not suitable for a stove” without a heat mat underneath. Keep bedding, clothing and firewood away from the stove, as Kodiak’s manual says, and dry the tent fully before storing it; our guide on how to clean a tent covers soot and mildew.

Matching a Stove to the Tent

Pipe size first

Buy the tent, then a stove whose pipe fits its jack. Kodiak’s jack is 5 inches and its manual approves one stove. White Duck pre-marks 5- and 6-inch cuts. OneTigris’s Rock Fortress jack is 3.3 inches square, cut for its Tiger Roar stove. Danchel lets you cut the jack to under 8 inches. KingCamp, Pomoly (Max), OneTigris (Smokey HUT) and TOMOUNT do not publish a jack size in what we read, so ask the seller before ordering a stove.

Stove size

A bigger firebox is not automatically better. In Backwoods Pursuit’s 16.5-foot Regatta, a large Winnerwell Woodlander Double View was “a bit on the small side” and needed to be kept “really cranking”, while in the 12×12 Kodiak the Colorado Cylinder Spruce package “proved to be PLENTY of stove”. Pomoly’s guide makes the opposite point for small tents: “More stove power is not automatically better.” Kodiak’s manual asks you to keep the stove and pipe from glowing red.

How These Hot Tents Were Chosen

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.

What each tent had to show

  • A stove jack fitted or supplied by the maker, and a maker description of winter, four-season or all-season use with a stove.
  • Capacity, floor size, peak height and weight as the maker lists them, and a waterproof rating where the maker publishes one (“not published” where it does not).
  • The jack size and material where published, and the maker’s own stove-use instructions where it gives them.
  • Stocked on Amazon, new and in stock at our check; where a third-party seller held the buy box, the review names it.
  • An independent review where we could find one, with the tested version named, or a plain note that the evidence is the maker’s specs.
Where the evidence comes from and tents and bundles we left out

Where the evidence comes from

Backwoods Pursuit tested the 12×12 Kodiak Cabin Lodge and the 16.5-foot White Duck Regatta with wood stoves in winter. Top-Notch Outdoor reviewed the earlier Smokey HUT, and the OneTigris Rock Fortress rests on an owner report. Outdoor Life tested hot tents from Nortent, Springbar, Seek Outside, Snowtrekker and White Duck, naming the White Duck Regatta Bell its “Best Budget” pick. KingCamp, Pomoly, Danchel and TOMOUNT rest on their makers’ specs. Safety guidance comes from the makers’ manuals and pages, the CPSC and the CDC. Each review’s Evidence line says which version a source covered.

Tents and bundles we left out

Outdoor Life’s top picks, the Nortent Gamme and the Springbar Skyliner, were out of stock on Amazon at our check, and Seek Outside and Snowtrekker sell direct. We looked for tent-and-stove bundles on Amazon (Pomoly, FireHiking, OneTigris and KingCamp each list one), but none was in stock at our check, so every pick here is a tent alone. Stoves sold on their own are not in this guide; a tent with a jack comes first, and the stove has to fit it. The Naturehike Ranch Fire showed no Add to Cart button on Amazon when we checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Which tent with a stove is best for cold-weather camping?

It depends on how you get to camp. For a drive-up base camp, a cotton-canvas cabin or bell with a factory jack, such as the Kodiak Canvas Cabin Lodge SR or White Duck Regatta, gives standing room and a stove that fits; Kodiak rates its 12×12 for four with a stove. To carry or sled the tent in, a nylon tipi such as the OneTigris Rock Fortress (9.2 lb per its Amazon listing) packs far lighter, but needs more care with sparks. Whichever you choose, follow the maker’s stove rules.

Q. Can I use a canvas tent in the winter?

Yes, if the maker designs it for that and it has a stove jack: Kodiak calls the Cabin Lodge SR all-season and White Duck calls the Regatta a four-season tent. Kodiak adds that its tent is “not designed for extreme winter mountaineering or heavy snow accumulations”, so clear snow off the roof. Backwoods Pursuit used both tents in temperatures down to the low single digits with a wood stove.

Q. Do I need a carbon monoxide detector in a hot tent?

Kodiak’s manual and OneTigris’s Rock Fortress page both call for one, and White Duck calls a portable CO detector “your best defense against the invisible gas”. The CPSC says: “People die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning from the use of portable camping heaters, lanterns, or stoves inside tents, campers, and vehicles.” The CDC advises battery-operated CO detectors near sleeping areas at home.

Q. Can I leave a wood stove burning while I sleep in a tent?

Not by the makers’ own rules. Kodiak’s manual says a hot stove should be tended by an adult “that is awake, alert, and sober”, and White Duck says never to leave a tent stove unattended. The CPSC says: “Never use fuel-burning portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in enclosed areas such as tents, campers and vehicles.”

Q. What size stove do I need for a hot tent?

Start from the jack: the stove’s pipe has to fit it (5 in on the Kodiak, 5 or 6 in on the White Duck, 3.3 in on the Rock Fortress). Then match the firebox to the tent: Backwoods Pursuit found a large Winnerwell a bit small for a 16.5-foot bell, and Pomoly warns that a big stove in a small tent makes it hard to control the heat.

The bottom line

Final Verdict

For a drive-up winter camp, the Kodiak Canvas 12×12 Cabin Lodge Tent SR (check price) is a cotton-canvas cabin with a 5-inch jack, an approved stove and a manual full of stove rules, rated for four with a stove; the White Duck Regatta Bell Tent 16′ (check price) takes 5- or 6-inch pipe and sleeps a group, with a flame-retardant fabric option at White Duck. To carry or sled the tent in, the OneTigris Rock Fortress (check price) is a 9.2 lb nylon tipi, and the OneTigris Smokey HUT (check price) is a solo tent at 5.3 lb. Families who want a floor can look at the KingCamp Canvas Hot Tent (check price), the DANCHEL OUTDOOR B2 Yurt (check price) or the POMOLY Chalet 70 Max (check price), and groups in dry cold at the MC TOMOUNT Canvas Bell Tent (check price).

Whichever you choose, a stove in a tent is a fire in a fabric room: follow the maker’s stove rules, use a spark arrestor and a stove mat, keep the vents open, and carry a battery-powered CO alarm, as the makers’ manuals above direct.
