Best Jerk Baits for Bass: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

Read the maker’s numbers for buoyancy and depth, because the Yo-Zuri 3DB Jerkbait 110 SP suspends and is rated 3-5 ft, the Berkley Stunna 112 sinks slowly on the pause, and the Rapala Shadow Rap Deep is rated 4-8 ft.

Our verdict

Top Picks: Eight Jerk Baits for Bass

A jerkbait is a minnow-shaped hard lure that you twitch with the rod tip and then leave still. Makers publish the figures that matter when you choose one: how long it is, how much it weighs, how deep it runs, and whether it suspends, floats or sinks slowly on the pause. This guide compares eight jerk baits for bass on exactly those published figures, with a note wherever a maker, a retailer and the Amazon listing give different numbers.

Where These Eight Jerkbaits Come From

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.

What a pick had to meet

  • A hard jerkbait whose maker publishes length, weight and running depth, or where we can say “not published”.
  • The maker states, or the maker’s own FAQ states, whether it suspends, floats or sinks slowly.
  • On Amazon at the time of writing, sold by Amazon.com or by the maker’s own storefront, at or below the maker’s list price where the maker publishes one.
  • The linked listing is the exact length and colour we describe, confirmed from Amazon’s variant data and the listing’s full title.
  • Figures come from the maker and are cross-checked against the Amazon listing. Where they disagree we use the maker’s and say so.
How the evidence lines are graded, what posters on r/bassfishing say and seller and stock checks

How the evidence lines are graded

Each review carries an “Evidence” line. “Independently reviewed, exact model” means an editorial review names the linked model. “Same series” means the review covers a sibling or an earlier release, and the review says which one. “Retailer review” means the writer works for a site that sells the bait, such as Bass Pro Shops, so it is not independent. “Maker specs” means we found no independent test and rest on the maker’s page alone. Customer comments on Tackle Warehouse and posts on Reddit are reported as what the poster wrote, not as a test.

What posters on r/bassfishing say

In the r/bassfishing thread “What’s your favorite jerkbait?” (34 comments, November 2022), posters named many baits. At least six named the Megabass Vision 110, which is not a pick here (see the seller check below). Three posters named the Husky Jerk, including one who wrote “Husky jerk, I have caught bass on megabass 110s and lucky craft pointers but I started fishing suspending jerkbaits with a rapala husky jerk”. Three posters named the Shadow Rap, one adding “seconded. shallow and deep versions.” One poster wrote “Warmer water lucky craft pointer in whatever size the bait is and cold water vision 110”. These are individual posters, not tests, and the thread is a few dozen comments.

Seller and stock checks

We read each listing on 2026-10-25. Seven are sold and shipped by Amazon.com and the Lucky Craft is sold by Lucky Craft USA, the maker’s storefront, and shipped from Amazon. Each linked price was at or below the maker’s list price where the maker publishes one; Lucky Craft and Yo-Zuri publish no list price on the pages we read. Some baits that other guides and forum posters name, such as the Megabass Vision 110, did not pass the seller and list-price check on the day we looked, so they are not picks. The live price and the “Prices as of” stamp come from Amazon in the table and review boxes, not from us.

Verdict

A 4 in suspending jerkbait with a maker-stated 4-5 ft depth, linked in the 238 Ghost Minnow colour from Lucky Craft’s own Amazon storefront.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Wired2Fish: Lucky Craft Flash Pointer SP 100 (4 in, 3/8 oz).

Lucky Craft lists the Pointer 100SP at 4 in (100 mm), 5/8 oz (16.5 g), suspending, with a 4-5 ft depth and two #5 hooks, and rates it for 10-12 lb line. Lucky Craft’s own pages give the depth two ways: the spec table says 4-5 ft, while a paragraph on the model’s item-list page says “The 100 is an inch longer than the 78, touts a larger profile and runs about 5 to 6 feet deep.” We use the spec-table figure. That item-list page also quotes pro angler Skeet Reese: “Seasonally speaking, Reese also tends to go with the Pointer 100 in colder water or pre-spawn conditions.”

The independent review we could read covers a sibling. Wired2Fish’s Walker Smith fished the Lucky Craft Flash Pointer SP 100 (4 in, 3/8 oz) and wrote “This jerkbait also suspends very well without modification.” That is a different bait from the 5/8 oz Pointer 100SP linked here. Customer comments archived on Tackle Warehouse, a retailer, include a caution about the Lucky Craft line: “ALMOST HALF OF MINE FLOAT.” (the writer does not give a size). Against the Yo-Zuri and Strike King suspenders in this guide, the Pointer is listed shorter and heavier: 4 in and 5/8 oz, against 4-3/8 in and 1/2 oz for the 3DB 110 SP and 4.5 in and 1/2 oz for the KVD 300.

    Cons

    • The maker’s page gives two depth figures, 4-5 ft in the table and 5-6 ft in the text
    • No independent review of this exact bait; the Wired2Fish test covers the Flash Pointer sibling
    • Tackle Warehouse customer comments report Pointer baits that float or sink instead of suspending
    • Lucky Craft publishes no list price on the pages we read

    4 in Silver · Suspending

Anglers who want a 4 in suspending jerkbait with a published 4-6 ft range and who fish windy days or cold fronts, the conditions the Wired2Fish reviewer describes.

$9.97 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:02 UTC

    Verdict

A 4 in suspending jerkbait with a maker-stated 4-6 ft depth and 7/16 oz weight, linked in Silver.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Wired2Fish: Rapala X-Rap (XR08 and XR10 sizes named; size fished not stated).

Rapala lists the X-Rap XR10 at 4 in, 7/16 oz, a 4-6 ft running depth and hooks “No. 4 & 5”. Rapala says it suspends on the pause and can be fished with an aggressive “Slashbait” action or a classic Rapala wobble. One thing to check on the Amazon page: its first bullet reads “Body Length: 4-3/4″; Weight: 3/4 oz.; Running Depth: 4′-8′”, which is Rapala’s XR12 row. The listing’s own title, overview and model number (XR10S) are the 4 in XR10, so we use Rapala’s XR10 figures.

Wired2Fish’s 2014 X-Rap review is by Walker Smith, who wrote “When I’m battling severe cold fronts, I’ve found few lures that produce as well as the Rapala X-Rap.” and “You can work it for an entire day with very minimal forearm fatigue, which is a huge plus in my book.” He names both the XR08 and XR10 sizes without saying which he fished, so we grade this as same series. Posters on r/bassfishing are less sure. In a thread about X-Raps the opening poster wrote “I have a number of them that I’m always drawn to throw during early spring and the fall, but I’m not getting the amount of bites that I want.”, and another poster wrote “They’re not the best jerkbait is all.”

Overlap with the other two Rapala jerkbaits: the X-Rap is the suspending bait with the 4-6 ft range, the Husky Jerk is rated 4-8 ft and the Shadow Rap Deep sinks slowly on the pause with the same 4-8 ft range. One poster in the X-Rap thread wrote “The shadow rap deep is 10x better.”; that is one poster’s view, not a test.

    Specs (linked variant)

      Pros

      • Suspends on the pause, with a maker-stated 4-6 ft running depth
      • Internal long-cast system and stainless through-wire construction, per Rapala
      • Wired2Fish’s reviewer wrote that its weight transfer system “results in absolute bomb casts”
      • VMC black nickel hooks, hand-tuned and tank-tested, per Rapala

      Cons

      • Some r/bassfishing posters report few bites on it
      • The Wired2Fish review is from 2014 and does not say which size was fished
      • The Amazon listing’s first bullet carries the larger XR12 figures
      • Mixed hook sizes, No. 4 and No. 5, per Rapala

Rapala Husky Jerk Jerkbait – Suspending Hard Bait – 4"…

      Rapala Husky Jerk HJ10

4 in Helsinki Ghost · Suspending

Anglers fishing rivers or wanting a 4 in suspending jerkbait with a 4-8 ft range from a long-running Rapala line, who accept that the evidence is retailer and forum reports.

$6.79 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:02 UTC

      Verdict

A 4 in suspending jerkbait with a maker-stated 4-8 ft depth and 3/8 oz weight, linked in Helsinki Ghost.

Evidence: Retailer review (sells it), not independent. Bass Pro Shops 1Source: Rapala Husky Jerk Minnow (size not stated).

Rapala lists the Husky Jerk HJ10 at 4 in, 3/8 oz, a 4-8 ft running depth and two No. 6 hooks, and describes it as suspending, with neutral buoyancy. The Amazon listing’s bullet matches those figures. Rapala says it can be cast or trolled at any speed and still run true, and that a rattle chamber sends sound through the water.

There is no independent test of the HJ10 in what we could read. The write-up we found is on Bass Pro Shops’ 1Source site; Bass Pro sells the bait, so it is a retailer review. Writer Jeff Knapp, who fished it for river smallmouth, wrote: “Given the many jerkbait choices now available, it would be easy to overlook the honorable Husky Jerk, which would be a mistake.” He does not name a size. He also gives the other side: “There’s no denying the balanced performance and extreme quality control of high end suspending jerkbaits; there are times when the fish demand such.” On r/bassfishing three posters named it, as covered in the methodology section.

Against the X-Rap, the Husky Jerk is rated deeper (4-8 ft against 4-6 ft) and lighter (3/8 oz against 7/16 oz) on Rapala’s own tables, and both are suspending. Rapala describes the X-Rap’s “Slashbait” action and the Husky Jerk’s rattle chamber; choose by the action you prefer.

      Specs (linked variant)

        Pros

        • Suspending with a maker-stated 4-8 ft running depth
        • Rapala says it runs true when cast or trolled at any speed
        • Rattle chamber, per Rapala
        • Named by three posters in the r/bassfishing favourites thread

        Cons

        • No independent test; the evidence is a Bass Pro (retailer) article and forum posts
        • Bass Pro’s writer notes that high-end suspending jerkbaits suit some days better
        • That article does not name a Husky Jerk size
        • The Amazon listing family spans Husky Jerk sizes from 2-1/2 to 5-1/2 in, so check the 4 in label

        Slow-Sinking 4-8 ft
Rapala Shadow Rap Deep 11 Silver Lure

        Rapala Shadow Rap Deep

        Silver · Slow-sinking

Anglers who want a slow-sinking jerkbait that Rapala rates for 4-8 ft and that can be worked nearly in place.

$9.97 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:02 UTC

        Verdict

        A 4-3/8 in slow-sinking jerkbait with a maker-stated 4-8 ft depth, linked in Size 11 Silver.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Wired2Fish: Shadow Rap and Shadow Rap Deep.

Rapala lists the Shadow Rap Deep (SDRD11) at 4-3/8 in, 7/16 oz, a 4-8 ft running depth and three No. 6 hooks, and says it sinks slowly on the pause. It says the bait “kicks almost 180 degrees right then left, so it can be fished nearly in place with very little forward travel”. Rapala makes one size of the Deep, so the Size 11 on the listing is the model.

Wired2Fish reviewed the Shadow Rap and the Deep together in 2015: “Both the Shadow Rap and Shadow Rap Deep offer an awesome kick with a slow subtle fade.” Its reviewer wrote “The Deep will get down to 6 feet while being worked but both baits were designed to mimic a real dying shad.”, while Rapala gives 4-8 ft; we use Rapala’s range. Three posters on r/bassfishing named the Shadow Rap in the favourites thread, one saying “seconded. shallow and deep versions.”

Trade-off against the Berkley Stunna 112, the other slow-sinking pick: Rapala publishes a depth range (4-8 ft) and a hook size (three No. 6) for the Deep, while Berkley does not publish either for the 112. Against the suspending baits, this one keeps easing down while paused instead of holding its depth.

        Specs (linked variant)

          Pros

          • Rapala says it kicks almost 180 degrees right then left, so it can be fished nearly in place
          • Slow-sinking on the pause with a maker-stated 4-8 ft running depth
          • Three No. 6 VMC fine-wire black nickel hooks, per Rapala
          • Independently reviewed by Wired2Fish together with the standard Shadow Rap

          Cons

          • Sinks slowly on the pause rather than holding depth
          • Wired2Fish’s 2015 review gives 6 ft where Rapala gives 4-8 ft
          • Rapala makes it in one size only
          • The Wired2Fish review covers the Shadow Rap and the Deep together

$12.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 01:02 UTC

          Verdict

A suspending jerkbait with a maker-stated 4-7 ft depth and 1/2 oz weight, linked in Sexy Shad.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Wired2Fish: KVD Jerkbait, 4 1/2 in and 4 3/4 in (2012 launch review).

Strike King lists the KVD Jerkbait 300 as diving 4-7 ft, 1/2 oz and 4.5 in long, with a weight transfer system and black nickel hooks; it does not publish a hook size on the page. A product FAQ on that page answers “Does this lure float, sink, or suspend?” with “It suspends.” The length differs by source: Strike King says 4.5 in, Tackle Warehouse’s table says 4.75 in, and the Amazon variant for this colour is labelled 4.25 in. We use the maker’s 4.5 in. Amazon’s model number is HCKVDJ300-590 and its item weight is 14.2 g, which fits the 1/2 oz.

The independent review is old and is of the launch version. Wired2Fish’s Jason Sealock reviewed the KVD Jerkbait in 2012 and wrote “The KVD Jerkbait comes in two sizes, 4 1/2 inches and 4 3/4 inches, with 19 color options hand picked by KVD himself.” He also wrote “It suspended well out of the box without any split ring additions or hook downsizing to change the float or sink of the bait.” and “The bait fishes nicely both fast and slow.” The review does not use the “300” name, so we grade it as same series.

Against the Yo-Zuri 3DB 110 SP, both are suspending baits at 1/2 oz: Strike King rates the KVD 300 for 4-7 ft and 4.5 in, Yo-Zuri rates the 3DB for 3-5 ft and 4-3/8 in. Strike King also makes a deeper-diving KVD 300 Deep; its maker page does not state buoyancy, so it is not a pick.

          Specs (linked variant)

            Pros

            • Suspends, with a maker-stated 4-7 ft running depth
            • Weight transfer system for casting, per Strike King
            • Wired2Fish’s 2012 review of the launch bait says it fishes well both fast and slow
            • Wired2Fish’s 2012 review of the launch bait found it suspended well out of the box

            Cons

            • Sources give three different lengths for the same bait: 4.5, 4.75 and 4.25 in
            • The independent review we found is from 2012 and covers the launch version
            • Hook size and count are not published on the maker’s page

            Verdict

A 4.4 in slow-sinking jerkbait at 1/2 oz, linked in the 112 size (not the 112+1) in Hankie Pankie.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Wired2Fish: Stunna 112.

Berkley lists the Stunna 112 at 4.4 in and 1/2 oz and its buoyancy as slow sinking. It describes “maximum darting action with easy 180-degree head turns”, a “natural slow sink when paused” and a single tungsten weight transfer for casting distance. Berkley’s page does not publish a running depth or a hook size for the 112; it lists the hooks as ProSpec Chrome. Amazon’s variant for this ASIN, “112mm – 1/2 oz”, matches Berkley’s figures.

An independent review names this exact bait. Wired2Fish’s Jason Sealock wrote “The Stunna 112 is balanced very well thanks to a fixed belly weight that keeps the bait oriented even on the most violent rips and jerk cadences.” and described it as a tool for cold winter bass and for open-water fish on real-time sonar. He also gives a limit: “On a long bomb cast, it has a tendency to blowout some at the end of the cast.” He names Fusion19 hooks, while Berkley’s page says ProSpec Chrome, so we do not name a hook model. Our guide to bass lures for winter covers the Stunna 112+2.

Trade-off against the Shadow Rap Deep: both sink slowly on the pause. The Rapala has a published 4-8 ft range and three No. 6 hooks; the Berkley has a tungsten weight transfer system and a published length and weight, but no published depth.

            Specs (linked variant)

              Pros

              • Slow sink on the pause with a single tungsten weight transfer, per Berkley
              • Wired2Fish reviewed the 112 itself and describes it as balanced on hard rips
              • Wired2Fish fished it around rip rap, docks and laydowns, over brush piles and with real-time sonar
              • Length, weight and buoyancy are all published for this size

              Cons

              • Berkley does not publish a running depth for the 112
              • On a long cast it can “blowout some at the end of the cast”, per Wired2Fish
              • Hook size is not published, and the review and the maker name different hooks
              • Several Stunna sizes share one Amazon listing family, so check the 112 label before you buy

              Verdict

A 4-3/8 in suspending jerkbait with a maker-stated 3-5 ft depth range and 1/2 oz weight, linked in Pearl Shad.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Wired2Fish: 3DB Series Jerkbait SP 110.

Yo-Zuri lists the 3DB Jerkbait 110 at 4-3/8 in (110 mm) and 1/2 oz (14 g), suspending, with a 3-5 ft depth range and three round bend black nickel hooks (size not published). It describes “Flat Sides” for stop-and-go retrieves and a weight transfer system for casting. Yo-Zuri’s page lists Pearl Shad among the colours. The Amazon listing shows an item weight of 18.14 g, against Yo-Zuri’s 14 g; we use Yo-Zuri’s figure.

Wired2Fish’s Shaye Baker reviewed the 3DB Series Jerkbait SP 110 in 2022, so this is an independent review of the linked bait. Baker wrote “With an average-length bill, this jerkbait will dive down to around 3 to 5 feet.”, which matches Yo-Zuri, and gives a condition: “This bait is designed to suspend best in water temps around 60 degrees.”

Our bass lures for winter guide also covers this bait; this guide compares it with seven other jerkbaits instead.

                Verdict

A 4 1/2 in suspending jerkbait at 3/8 oz with a maker-stated 0-6 ft cranking depth, linked in Gold Rogue.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Smithwick brand store (maker specs).

Smithwick’s brand store (run by PRADCO Outdoor Brands) lists the Suspending Rattlin’ Rogue at 4 1/2 in, 3/8 oz, with a cranking depth of 0-6 ft, a trolling depth of 10-14 ft and #6 hooks. Smithwick’s page says “It features a standard minnow shape, 3 treble hooks, and a unique glued in bill that flexes just enough to allow the Rogue to dance lightly.” It names the bait “Suspending” but its spec list has no separate buoyancy line, so we take the name. Tackle Warehouse, a retailer, lists the same bait at 0-4 ft; we use Smithwick’s 0-6 ft. The Amazon listing’s bullet quotes only the trolling depth, 10-14 ft.

We found no independent test we could read, so the evidence is the maker’s specs alone. Tackle Warehouse’s archived customer comments, dated 2015 to 2017, are mixed: one wrote “They do not suspend at all.”, another “These jerkbaits are ok but they always float for me right at ice out.”, and a third “But I too have found that they have gotten hard to tune.” Those are individual buyers writing years ago, and they do not tell us how current stock behaves.

Against the Husky Jerk, which is also suspending at 3/8 oz, the Rogue is listed at 4 1/2 in with a 0-6 ft cranking depth and a separate trolling depth, while the Husky Jerk is 4 in with a 4-8 ft range.

                Specs (linked variant)

                  Pros

                  • Suspending-named bait with a maker-stated 0-6 ft cranking depth and a 10-14 ft trolling depth
                  • Smithwick describes a glued-in flexing bill for a rolling action
                  • Smithwick lists #6 hooks, and the listing matches its 4 1/2 in and 3/8 oz
                  • Smithwick says “For more than 30 years the Rogue has been the go-to lure for early spring bass, and for trolling up trophy walleyes any time of year.”

                  Cons

                  • No independent test found; maker specs only
                  • Archived Tackle Warehouse customer comments report baits that float or are hard to tune
                  • Retailer and maker disagree on running depth (0-4 ft against 0-6 ft)
                  • No separate buoyancy line on Smithwick’s spec list

Choosing a Jerkbait for Bass: Buoyancy, Depth and Size

                  Suspending, floating or slow-sinking

Tackle Warehouse says the jerkbait has become a year-round bait, with different sink rates, sizes and diving depths to choose from. Buoyancy is the figure that decides what the bait does on the pause. Rapala, for example, labels the Husky Jerk “Neutral Buoyancy” and says the Shadow Rap Deep is “Slow-Sinking on Pause”; a floating bait rises instead. Wired2Fish’s Pete M. Anderson notes that fluorocarbon behaves differently from monofilament: “It sinks, dragging your suspending jerkbait slightly deeper and forcing it to settle when stopped.” Line choice therefore interacts with buoyancy. All eight picks are suspending or slow-sinking baits; we did not include a floating model.

                  Running depth and size

The makers’ depth ranges here run from 0-6 ft (Smithwick) to 4-8 ft (Rapala), and Berkley does not publish one. Bass Pro’s Dustin Evans suggests a bait of around 3 to 4 inches as a starting point. He says the deep-diving suspending baits suit water that is 25 to 40 feet deep with visibility of 4 to 6 feet, and that in very clear water, 10 to 20 feet of visibility, the shallower baits do better. His article is from 2013, updated in 2019, and Bass Pro sells these baits. Every pick here is 4 to 4 1/2 inches by the makers’ figures.

                  Colour and water clarity

Tackle Warehouse says the clearer the water, the more translucent the colour you will want, and that chartreuse shad or anything with a white base will perform in stained water or low-light conditions. Bass Pro’s Evans uses bright or reflective baits when visibility is 4 feet or less, and more transparent or natural colours at 6 to 10 feet; he writes “The most reliable single color is ghost minnow.” Colour names differ by maker, so the linked colour in each review is the one on the Amazon variant we checked, and it is not a recommendation.

                  Rod, reel and line

Retailers and editors agree on the broad setup, with some differences. Tackle Warehouse recommends a casting rod of 6’6″ to 7’2″ with a medium-power, moderate-fast taper, 10 to 12 lb fluorocarbon, and a reel with a gear ratio from 6:1 to 7:1. Wired2Fish’s Pete M. Anderson says “Medium power has enough backbone to work small to medium jerkbaits, which measure about 4 1/2 inches long”, puts the gear ratio at 7:1 or higher and says 8 lb test will serve well day in and day out. Bass Pro’s Evans suggests a 6.5- to 7-foot rod with a medium action. For a rod to match, see our baitcasting rods for bass, and for the line question see what pound test line to use for bass fishing.

                  The pause and the retrieve

Tackle Warehouse describes the retrieve as a few turns of the reel to get the lure down, a downward twitch of the rod tip, and a pause, with slack kept in the line between twitches, and says colder water calls for a longer pause. Bass Pro’s Evans puts it more briefly: “Just remember — the most important part of jerkbaiting is the PAUSE!!” For where jerkbaits fit among other lure types, see types of fishing lures, and for rivers, river smallmouth lures.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

                  Q. What is the best jerkbait for bass?

There is no single answer in the sources we read. The makers’ depth ranges, from 0-6 ft to 4-8 ft, and the buoyancy types differ, and posters on r/bassfishing name different baits. The picks above are the ones that passed our seller and list-price check, each with its evidence graded on the review. Start from how deep the fish are and whether you want the bait to suspend or sink slowly, then choose among the baits that match.

                  Q. Is a jerkbait good for bass fishing?

Tackle Warehouse calls the jerkbait a year-round producer and says “The sharp, unpredictable action of a jerkbait entices lethargic fish to react in the winter”. Bass Pro’s Dustin Evans says cold water and sluggish fish are when he starts throwing a suspending jerkbait. Both are retailers, so treat this as their view.

                  Q. When should you throw a jerkbait for bass?

Tackle Warehouse describes the jerkbait as a cold-water, pre-spawn tactic that now works year-round, with a faster, more aggressive cadence that may be more effective as water warms. Wired2Fish suggests fluorocarbon when the water is in the mid-40s or colder and monofilament as it warms into the high 40s and beyond. The Yo-Zuri review adds that the 3DB 110 SP is designed to suspend best around 60 degrees.

                  Q. What are the best jerkbait colors for bass?

The sources tie colour to water clarity rather than naming one. Tackle Warehouse says the clearer the water, the more translucent the colour, and chartreuse shad or a white base in stained or low-light water. Bass Pro’s Evans uses bright or reflective baits at 4 feet of visibility or less and transparent or natural colours at 6 to 10 feet. The colours linked in this guide are the variants we verified, not a recommendation.

                  Q. Should I use a suspending, floating or slow-sinking jerkbait?

It depends on the pause you want. Six of the eight picks are suspending baits by the makers’ labels (the Rogue by its product name, since its spec list has no buoyancy line), and two sink slowly: the Rapala Shadow Rap Deep and the Berkley Stunna 112. A floating jerkbait rises on the pause; none of our picks is a floater.

                  Q. What rod, reel and line do jerkbaits need?

Tackle Warehouse recommends a 6’6″ to 7’2″ casting rod with a medium-power, moderate-fast blank, a 6:1 to 7:1 reel and 10 to 12 lb fluorocarbon. Wired2Fish suggests a moderate-action rod, a reel of at least 7:1 and 8 lb line for everyday use. Bass Pro’s Evans suggests a 6.5- to 7-foot medium-action rod and 8 to 10 lb fluorocarbon. See the choosing guide above for the sources.

                  Q. Do jerkbaits work for smallmouth, pike or striped bass?

Several makers name other species. Smithwick lists bass, walleyes, salmon, trout, panfish and pike for the Rogue, and the Amazon listing for the Husky Jerk names bass, walleye and pike. A poster in the r/bassfishing X-Rap thread wrote “I do well using them for stripers. I pretty much reel them as fast as possible and throw in a few sharp jerks of my rod tip.” For smallmouth in current, see our guide to river smallmouth lures.

                  The bottom line

                  Final Verdict

Choose by buoyancy and depth first. For a suspending bait rated 3-5 ft, the Yo-Zuri 3DB Jerkbait 110 SP (check price) has an independent review of the exact model; the Lucky Craft Pointer 100SP (check price) is rated 4-5 ft; the Rapala X-Rap XR10 (check price) 4-6 ft; the Strike King KVD Jerkbait 300 (check price) 4-7 ft; and the Rapala Husky Jerk HJ10 (check price) 4-8 ft. For a bait that sinks slowly on the pause, the Rapala Shadow Rap Deep (check price) is rated 4-8 ft, and the Berkley Stunna 112 (check price) has no published depth. The Smithwick Suspending Rattlin’ Rogue (check price) is rated 0-6 ft and rests on maker specs alone. Each review shows how strong its evidence is.
