The short answer
The Shimano Sensilite A 6′ light is the low-cost all-rounder Outdoor Life tested at this exact length; the Ugly Stik GX2 6’6″ light is the two-piece for rough use; the St. Croix Trout Series 6’6″ light is the carbon rod for small lures.
Our verdict
Top Picks for Light Action Spinning Rods
Many anglers, and even Outdoor Life’s trout rod test (its light-power Sensilite con reads “Too soft for a light-action rod”), say “light action” when they mean light power, and most results for this search are ultralight rod lists, so every rod here is rated Light (L) power by its maker at the exact length we link. Action is a different spec: power is how much force bends the rod, action (taper) is where it bends, so a light rod can be fast or moderate (what a light spinning rod is). Ultralight rods have their own guide.

How We Chose Light Power Rods
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.
What every rod had to meet
- Light (L) power on the maker’s own model table or listing for the linked length and pieces; no ultralight or medium-light rods.
- New and in stock on Amazon when we checked, with a named seller.
- Maker line and lure ratings printed as the maker gives them; where the Amazon listing disagrees, we use the maker and say so.
Where the evidence comes from and what anglers say about light power
Where the evidence comes from
Outdoor Life’s trout rod test covers two of these series: the Sensilite A at our exact 6′ light, and the GX2 at 5’6″ light. Two picks rest on Reddit posters, four on maker specs only.
What anglers say about light power
In an r/FishingForBeginners thread on ultralight vs light, a poster writes: “Both a light and an ultralight will do okay with a 1/16oz jig or spinner. The ultralight will be noticeably better if you go down to something like a 1/32.” Another adds: “A light is more versatile at the expense of not being able to cast mini mites or trout magnets well.” The same poster warns that “there is no uniformity between brands labeling their rods”, so read the ratings, not just the label.
In a thread asking why light power rods are rarely recommended, one poster says, “I use a light rod for sauger/saugeye, walleye, and crappie. It’s fantastic.” Another explains the gap: “I just think most people start with a medium, and stepping down to a light doesn’t offer that much more.”
Detailed Reviews: 8 Light Power Spinning Rods
Shimano Sensilite A, Light Trout All-Rounder
6' L 1-piece (SENS60LA) · Not published
Trout and pond anglers who want one low-cost light rod.
$49.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:55 UTCVerdict
The one pick here with an independent test of the exact model we link; sold by Shimano’s Amazon store.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Outdoor Life: 6′ light Sensilite A.
Outdoor Life named the 6′ light Sensilite A its best all-rounder: “The Shimano Sensilite casts incredibly smoothly, thanks to its aluminum oxide guides, allowing you to chuck small to medium lures a fair distance.” Its caveat sits next to that praise: “it’s a little too soft and lacks the backbone to cast heavy lures or baits, and it feels a bit undergunned when you hook into a big one.” Shimano says the series suits “streams, docks, or ponds”. Our spinning rods under $100 and trout spinning rods guides pick this same rod. Its ultralight siblings are a separate class.

Shimano Stimula D, Budget Light Fast Rod
6'6" L 1-piece (STS66LD) · Composite
Budget anglers fishing small lures from the bank.
$34.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:56 UTCVerdict
An entry-level 6’6″ one-piece light with a fast action; sold by Shimano’s Amazon store.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Shimano.
Shimano describes a “high-quality composite blank with a crisp feel” and downsized aluminum oxide guides. We found no independent test. Against the Sensilite: longer, in the same price tier, but its lure rating tops out at 3/16 oz, the lowest ceiling here alongside the Lew’s listing figure.
Specs: 6’6″ L 1-piece (STS66LD)
Pros
- Fast-action 6’6″ light at an entry-level price
Cons
- Narrow 1/8-3/16 oz lure rating
- No independent test found
- Rating: 4-8 lb mono, 5-10 lb braid, 1/8-3/16 oz (Shimano)

Ugly Stik GX2, Glass-Graphite Two-Piece
6'6" L 2-piece (USGXSP662L) · Graphite and fiberglass
Anglers who are hard on gear or carry a rod into the backcountry.
$59.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:56 UTCVerdict
A graphite-and-fiberglass light in two pieces with Ugly Stik’s “10-year rod warranty” (the Amazon listing says 7 years); sold by Amazon.com.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Outdoor Life: 5’6″ light GX2, two-piece.
Outdoor Life tested the 5’6″ light GX2 (not this 6’6″) and called it its best backcountry rod: “Combining all the strength of graphite with the flexibility of fiberglass in a perfect blend, the Ugly Stick GX2 is the perfect backcountry trout rod because it fishes great and is famously indestructible.” Its con: “A bit too stiff for small water and small fish.” The 5’6″ was not in stock when we checked. Ugly Stik publishes no action for the GX2; the Amazon listing says fast, and its pieces field says one piece while the selected variant and bullet say two. Its 1/8-1/2 oz rating is the heaviest here after the Okuma.
Specs: 6’6″ L 2-piece (USGXSP662L)
Pros
- Graphite-and-fiberglass blank Outdoor Life calls rugged
- Two pieces for a pack or car
Cons
- Outdoor Life found the GX2 stiff for small water and small fish
- Shrink-tube handle, not cork
- Rating: 4-10 lb, 1/8-1/2 oz (Ugly Stik)
- Action: not published (listing: fast)
- Price tier: $
Berkley Cherrywood HD, Short Cork-Handle Rod
5'6" L 2-piece (CWD2-562LS) · Not published
Small-stream and panfish anglers on a budget.
$31.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:55 UTCVerdict
A 5’6″ two-piece light with cork handles and a 2-6 lb line rating; sold by Amazon.com.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Berkley.
Berkley lists “Hybrid design construction” with blank-through-handle construction and cork handles; it does not name the blank material. Its 2-6 lb line rating is the lightest here, matched only by the Lew’s listing figure, and close to ultralight territory. Our freshwater rod guide picks this same rod. Against the Fenwick: a similar short length in the entry-level tier rather than premium, with a published line rating.
Specs: 5’6″ L 2-piece (CWD2-562LS)
Pros
- Light line rating and cork handles at entry-level price
Cons
- Blank material not published
- No independent test found
- Rating: 2-6 lb, 1/16-1/4 oz (Berkley)
- Action: fast
- Price tier: $
St. Croix Trout Series, Carbon Rod for Small Lures
6'6" L 2-piece (TFS66LF2) · SCII carbon
Trout anglers throwing spinners and small crankbaits.
$165.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:55 UTCVerdict
A 6’6″ two-piece light on SCII carbon from St. Croix’s “trout-focused” series; sold by Amazon.com.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/Fishing_Gear: 6’6″ light fast.
On r/Fishing_Gear, a poster who fished a friend’s rod writes, “I used the 6’6″ light fast,” and: “I like the blank – the action is almost perfect for small treble hooked baits like rapala floaters, mepps spinners, and the like.” The same poster calls the components “the absolute cheapest possible” for the price: an EVA grip, a plastic reel seat and steel guides. The ultralight in this series is in our ultralight guide; this is the light version.
Specs: 6’6″ L 2-piece (TFS66LF2)
Pros
- SCII carbon blank a poster praises for small treble-hook lures
Cons
- The same poster calls its grip, seat and guides cheap for the price
- Rating: 4-10 lb, 1/16-5/16 oz (St. Croix)
- Action: fast
- Price tier: $$$
Lew’s LFS, Long Light Fast Rod
7' L 1-piece (LFS70LFS) · LFS-X3 graphite
Bass and panfish anglers who want a 7' fast-action light rod.
$139.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:56 UTCVerdict
The longest fast-action light here, 7′ in one piece; sold by Outdoor Sports Specialties and shipped by Amazon.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Lew’s.
Lew’s builds the LFS on its LFS-X3 blank, “featuring three woven graphite materials”. Lew’s model table did not load for our reader, so the 2-6 lb line rating, 1/16-3/16 oz lure rating and two-year limited warranty come from Lew’s Amazon listing. Our Ned rig rods guide picks this same rod. Against the Stimula: also fast, longer, and in the premium tier.
Specs: 7′ L 1-piece (LFS70LFS)
Pros
- Woven three-material graphite blank at 7′
Cons
- Maker table unreadable; ratings from the listing
- One piece at 7′ and a third-party seller
- Rating: listing: 2-6 lb, 1/16-3/16 oz
- Action: fast
- Price tier: $$$
Okuma SST “a”, Moderate Kokanee-Trout Rod
7' L 2-piece (SST-S-702La) · 24/30-ton carbon
Kokanee and trout anglers who want a moderate taper.
$71.64 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:55 UTCVerdict
A 7′ two-piece light with a moderate taper and the widest lure rating here; sold by Sportco Wholesale on Amazon at the time of writing.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Okuma.
Okuma rates it 4-10 lb and 1/8-3/4 oz and says the series is built for “salmon, steelhead, trout, kokanee, halibut, and sturgeon”. Its page names both “24/30-ton low resin carbon blanks” and “Okuma IM-8 graphite”. The Amazon listing says 2-8 lb; we use Okuma’s figure. Our trout spinning rods guide picks this same rod. Against the Lew’s: same length, slower taper and heavier lures.
Specs: 7′ L 2-piece (SST-S-702La)
Pros
- Moderate taper with a 1/8-3/4 oz lure rating
Cons
- Okuma lists a 1-year limited warranty
- Third-party seller
- Rating: 4-10 lb, 1/8-3/4 oz (Okuma)
- Action: moderate
- Price tier: $$
Fenwick HMG Trout & Panfish, Short High-Modulus Rod
5' L 1-piece (HMGT50L-MFS) · 30/24-ton graphite
Small-stream anglers who want a short premium rod.
$169.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:56 UTCVerdict
A 5′ one-piece light on 30/24-ton graphite with titanium guide frames; sold by Frank’s Great Outdoors on Amazon at the time of writing.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/Fishing_Gear: Trout & Panfish 3-piece, power not stated.
On r/Fishing_Gear, a poster with the three-piece HMG Trout & Panfish (power not stated) writes, “The HMG has some of the absolute best components of any rod in it’s price range,” and of the action, “This rod claims to be moderate fast, and it is.” The caveat: the grip is “only really comfortable if you hold the rod in a “textbook” grip”. Fenwick does not publish a line rating for this model. Our trout spinning rods guide picks this same rod.
Specs: 5′ L 1-piece (HMGT50L-MFS)
Pros
- 30/24-ton graphite blend with titanium guide frames
Cons
- A poster finds the grip comfortable only in a textbook hold
- No published line rating
- Rating: line not published, 1/16-3/8 oz (Fenwick)
- Action: moderate fast
- Price tier: $$$
Light Power, Light Action and Light Fast Action Explained
Light fast action spinning rod or moderate?
A light fast action spinning rod bends mostly in the upper part of the blank; a moderate rod bends further down (how power and action differ). Labels vary between makers: the St. Croix poster above found “St Croix’s “fast” is dammed near slower than Fenwick’s moderate.”
Light or ultralight?
Light is one step above ultralight. On these tables, light rods start at 1/16 or 1/8 oz; Shimano’s ultralight Sensilite A models start at 1/32 oz. The posters quoted above pick light for versatility and ultralight for the smallest lures.
Reading the line rating and lure rating
The line rating is the line strength the maker designed the rod for; the lure rating is the weight it casts well. Shimano gives separate mono and braid figures; others give one.
Frequently Asked Questions About Light Action Spinning Rods
Q. What fish are light action rods good for?
Shimano and Fenwick name trout and panfish, St. Croix calls its series “trout-focused”, and Berkley’s Amazon listing adds bass and perch. A poster in the thread above also uses one for “sauger/saugeye, walleye, and crappie”.
Q. What is the best lightweight spinning rod?
Rod weight and rod power are different things. St. Croix’s listing copy gives a rod weight (2.9 oz for the 6’6″ Trout Series), though the same listing’s item-weight field says 16 ounces. The Berkley, Ugly Stik and Okuma listings have item-weight fields that do not say what was weighed (3.2 oz, 0.1 kg and 5.67 g; the Okuma figure is too light for a 7′ rod, so it is a listing error), the other listings give none, and none of the makers’ pages we read gives one, so we cannot rank these rods by weight.
Q. Is a light action spinning rod good for bass?
For small lures, yes: the Amazon listings for the Lew’s and the Ugly Stik name bass as a target species, and the two are rated to 3/16 and 1/2 oz. For Ned rigs see our Ned rig rods, mostly medium-light.
Q. What reel goes on a light spinning rod?
A small spinning reel matched to the rod’s line rating; see our ultra light spinning reels.
