Best Lightweight Insulated Hunting Boots: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

For a light leather boot to walk and hunt in all day, look at the Meindl EuroLight Hunter 300; for a mid-height 400 g boot at an entry-level tier, the Danner Vital 8″ 400G; and for wet ground and stand sits in a rubber knee boot, the LaCrosse AeroHead Sport 16″ 3.5mm.

Our verdict

Our Top Picks

A lightweight insulated hunting boot is a compromise on purpose: enough insulation to keep your feet comfortable on a cool morning, without the bulk of a pac boot that wears you out on the walk in. We compared eight boots from Meindl, LaCrosse, Irish Setter and Danner, seven lace-ups with 300 or 400 grams of synthetic insulation, two of them women’s versions, plus one rubber knee boot with 3.5 mm of neoprene. Every boot is one whose maker describes it, or the parts that set its weight, as light, lightweight or ultralight, and each review quotes those words.

You will not find a weight comparison here. Every maker in this guide publishes a per-pair weight, or none at all, without saying which size it weighed, and a size 13 boot weighs more than a size 8 of the same model. Rather than line up numbers that are not comparable, we left them out and say in each review which size we link.

How We Picked These Light Insulated Boots

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves

What earned a place

  • The maker calls the boot, or the parts that set its weight, light, lightweight or ultralight on its own product page or its Amazon listing. Each review quotes those words.
  • It is insulated: 300 or 400 grams of synthetic insulation for the lace-ups, or 3.5 mm of neoprene for the rubber boot, as the maker states it.
  • It is sold as a hunting boot, with a waterproof membrane or a waterproof rubber-and-neoprene build.
  • Amazon showed the exact model, insulation level, colour, size and width we link in stock and new when we checked on 2026-10-22.
  • The boots are not ranked by weight, and no weights are compared.
Why this guide prints no weights, where the evidence comes from and where the sources disagree

Why this guide prints no weights

Meindl, LaCrosse and Danner publish a per-pair weight for their boots here; Irish Setter publishes none, and LaCrosse gives none for the AeroHead Sport 3.5 mm. None of the published figures says which size was weighed, and Meindl’s own figures for the women’s boot differ between its website and its Amazon listing. A weight without a size cannot be checked against another boot’s, so we leave the numbers out and rely on how each maker describes the boot, quoted, plus what reviewers said about it on foot.

Where the evidence comes from

Specs come from each maker’s product page: Meindl USA’s tech specs, LaCrosse’s and Danner’s specification tables, and Irish Setter’s tech specs. For the AeroHead Sport 3.5 mm, LaCrosse’s site no longer shows a product page, so we used LaCrosse’s AeroHead Sport family page, two LaCrosse support articles and the boot’s Amazon listing, and we say so in that review.

Independent reviews come from Born Hunting (EuroLight Hunter 300, size 13 regular), Field & Stream (EuroLight Hunter 300 and the Ursa LS GTX, probably the uninsulated version; see below), Hunting Life (Lady EuroLight Hunter 300, women’s size 10, a pro-staff writer’s review), Better Trail (Vital Insulated, men’s 8.5 wide), Mountain Weekly News (Ursa LS 400G), MidCurrent (uninsulated VaprTrek, men’s 11 D) Hatch Magazine (AeroHead Sport 3.5 mm) and HuntTested (uninsulated Wingshooter 9″, style 894), plus one owner review on Reddit of the 9″ 400g Wingshooter from 2016. Where a source tested another size, insulation level or the uninsulated sibling, the review’s evidence line says so. Where we could, we link the exact size the reviewer wore: the EuroLight Hunter in men’s 13, the Lady EuroLight in women’s 10 and the Vital in men’s 8.5 wide.

Where the sources disagree

  • Meindl sizing. Meindl’s product page says, “We recommend ordering this boot one-half size smaller than your regular U.S. size or use our Perfect Fit Sizing Tool.” Born Hunting’s reviewer found them true to size in a 13, and Field & Stream lists “Runs a bit wide” as a con. Try them on if you can, or order from a seller with free returns.
  • What 3.5 mm of neoprene equals. One LaCrosse support article says “3.5MM of neoprene is equivalent to approximately 200-400G of insulation”; another puts the AeroHead Sport’s 3.5 mm at “approximately 200-300G.” Both are LaCrosse’s own estimates.
  • Ursa LS insulation in Field & Stream’s test. Field & Stream’s text says, “They also have 400 grams of PrimaLoft insulation, giving them a bit of an edge over some similar mountain boots,” but its spec box lists “Insulation: None” and the weight LaCrosse gives for the uninsulated Ursa LS GTX. We treat its test as one of the uninsulated sibling.
  • Is 400 grams enough? Field & Stream’s buying advice is blunt: “Cold weather is too much for 400-gram Thinsulate boots to handle, and if you stop walking for just a few minutes, you’ll quickly realize it.” Better Trail’s tester put the Vital 400G’s lower comfort limit in the mid-20s Fahrenheit during light activity. Light insulated boots suit moving hunts and mild-to-cool sits; for long, still sits in deep cold, plan on more insulation.

Meindl EuroLight Hunter 300, 300g Gore Leather Boot

300g Gore Leather Boot
Meindl Men's EuroLight Hunter 300-gram | Gore Air-Fiber…

EuroLight 300

men's size 13 D (regular) · Gore Air-Fibre 300

hunters who walk much of the day in cool to cold weather and want a light, supportive leather boot rather than a pac boot.

$403.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Meindl calls the EuroLight Hunter 300 “Meindl’s lightest insulated hunting boot,” and its Amazon listing heads the description “ULTRALIGHT DESIGN.” It is a 9 in lace-up with Gore Air-Fibre 300 insulation, a Gore-Tex lining, a polyurethane midsole, Meindl’s Duo-Dur III outsole and an A/B flex rating, which Meindl gives to boots for walking, light hiking and hunting with light loads in rural terrain, low mountains and meadows. Meindl’s spec table lists the upper as waxed full grain nubuck leather; its Amazon listing says “full-grain leather and cordura uppers,” so the sources differ on the upper. It is resoleable and made in Europe, in men’s 7 to 14 in regular (D) and wide (EE).

Born Hunting’s Zach Bowhay hunted elk in the EuroLight Hunter 300 and wore the size we link: “I typically wear a size 13 in regular-width boots, which fit exactly as expected.” His summary: “They’re slightly stiffer than many early-season boots I’ve worn, but they stay lightweight, breathable, and comfortable in the field.” Field & Stream named it “Best Lightweight” in its cold-weather boot test, without naming a size; its tester wrote, “The boots were easy to walk in throughout my testing and gave me no blisters or hotspots.”

Meindl USA sells it on Amazon from its own storefront.

Verdict

a 9 in leather boot with 300 g Gore insulation, sold under Meindl’s “ULTRALIGHT DESIGN” heading, for hunters who cover miles; it is light insulation, so plan socks and layers for long sits.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Born Hunting, Meindl’s EuroLight Hunter 300: EuroLight Hunter 300, men’s 13 regular.

    Danner Vital 8″ 400G, Leather-Textile 400G Boot

    Leather-Textile 400G Boot
Vital 8" Waterproof Hunting Boots Insulated, Mossy Oak…

    Vital 400G

    men's size 8.5 EE (wide) · 400G Thinsulate Ultra

hunters who move through cool, wet fall days and want a light, wide-fitting 400 g boot at an entry-level tier.

$219.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Danner describes the Vital as “Light, fast, aggressive, yet stealthy,” and its Plyolite midsole as offering “lightweight comfort and shock absorption.” The 400G version pairs 400 g of Thinsulate Ultra with Danner Dry, Danner’s own waterproof membrane, under an 8 in upper of polyurethane-impregnated split leather and 900 denier polyester. It laces with Danner’s Lock & Load ghillies and speed hooks and sits on the DT-4 last, which Danner says gives “an athletic fit with a tighter heel pocket and a wider toe box.” Sizes run from men’s 7 to 16 in D and EE.

Better Trail tested the Vital Insulated in the size we link: “I wear a men’s 8.5 to 9 and tested an 8.5 wide, and the fit was excellent.” Its tester wrote that “the Danner felt refreshingly light and evenly balanced,” and on water, “It uses Danner’s in-house Danner Dry membrane, and during all of my testing—whether I was shoveling snow, trudging through slush, or hiking in wet conditions—my feet stayed dry.” On warmth the same tester was candid: “With medium-thick wool socks, I found the lower comfort limit to be around the mid-20s Fahrenheit during light activity—anything colder while stationary, and my feet would start to chill.” Better Trail does not name the colour it tested.

On Amazon this boot appears under two colour names on one listing, “Mossy Oak Break-up Country” and “Mossy Oak Break-up Country – New,” with the same description; the 8.5 wide is offered under the “- New” name, which is the one we link. The seller is OutdoorEquipped, a third-party store.

    Verdict

a mid-height 400 g lace-up that Danner sells as “Light, fast,” at an entry-level tier; Better Trail found it comfortable on foot and noted its limit on still, cold days.

      Pros

      • 400 g Thinsulate Ultra in a boot Danner calls “Light, fast” at an entry-level tier
      • Better Trail’s tester in the 8.5 wide reported excellent fit and dry feet in slush
      • Wide (EE) sizing up to 16

      Cons

      • Better Trail’s tester felt a chill below the mid-20s Fahrenheit when stationary
      • “Lengthy lace-up process due to the sheer number of eyelets,” per Better Trail
      • Sold by a third-party seller, OutdoorEquipped

The AeroHead Sport is a knee-high hunting boot with a polyurethane AeroForm shell over neoprene. LaCrosse heads its AeroHead Sport family page “Lightweight For Long Hauls” and writes, “The AeroForm® shell wears light on your feet to lessen fatigue for hunting farther, longer and hauling out heavier game.” The 3.5 mm version we link has the thinner of the two neoprene layers LaCrosse offers; LaCrosse’s own estimates of what that equals differ (200-400 g in one support article, 200-300 g in another). It stands 16 in, has a jersey knit liner, a kick-off heel plate and an adjustable neoprene gusset. LaCrosse’s site no longer shows a product page for the 3.5 mm, so these specs come from LaCrosse’s family page, its support articles and its Amazon listing; we found no maker list price.

Hatch Magazine wore the 3.5 mm for about 15 miles of scouting through flooded timber and on a treestand sit. Its reviewer wrote, “The Aerohead Sports are easily the most comfortable pair of “rubber-bottomed” boots I’ve ever worn,” and “To be fair, these were the lightweight model boots (3.5 mm thick neoprene and polyurethane vs. 7.5 for the heavyweights), but I’m confident that my feet won’t be soaked in sweat and then freeze me out after a long hike and cold sit in even my most distant treestands.” (LaCrosse lists the thicker version as 7 mm, not 7.5.) On cold he was cautious: “But based on the brand’s performance over the years, I should be fine down to the teens with a good pair of wool socks and maybe some chemical heat packs.” Hatch does not name the size it wore; its reviewer ordered a half size up for thick socks.

The seller on Amazon is EuroOptic, an outdoor retailer.

      Verdict

a 16 in rubber-and-neoprene knee boot that LaCrosse sells as light for long hauls, at an entry-level tier, for wet ground and stand hunting in cool weather.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Hatch Magazine, Review: LaCrosse Aerohead Sport boots: AeroHead Sport 16 in 3.5 mm, size not stated.

Specs: LaCrosse AeroHead Sport 16″ 3.5mm (men’s 10, Optifade Marsh)

        Pros

        • AeroForm shell that LaCrosse describes as “ultra-light and flexible” on its Amazon listing
        • Hatch’s reviewer called it the most comfortable rubber-bottomed boot he had worn
        • Knee height for creek crossings and flooded timber

        Cons

        • 3.5 mm is the thinner of LaCrosse’s two neoprene options; Hatch’s reviewer would add heat packs for the teens
        • A pull-on boot: Hatch’s reviewer found “a bit of slop and no way to control it” when sized up
        • No live LaCrosse product page for the 3.5 mm; specs rest on the family page, support articles and Amazon listing

$419.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

The Ursa LS 400G is LaCrosse’s late-season version of its Ursa mountain boot, a 10 in lace-up with 400 g of PrimaLoft Gold, a Gore-Tex liner, a Bi-Fit stability board that LaCrosse says spreads weight underfoot, and a Vibram Ursa Traction outsole. LaCrosse describes the upper as “Suede with lightweight, abrasion-resistant nylon offers rugged durability.” It has a 360-degree mud guard and a 4-way stretch collar, and comes in men’s 7 to 15, regular and wide.

Mountain Weekly News wore the Ursa 10″ late-season boot in the Tetons and wrote, “The first thing you will notice about this boot is its 400 grams of Primaloft Gold insulation, this is a warm boot.” It does not name the size it wore. Field & Stream tested the Ursa LS GTX; its spec box lists “Insulation: None” and the weight LaCrosse gives for the uninsulated version, while its text says, “They also have 400 grams of PrimaLoft insulation, giving them a bit of an edge over some similar mountain boots,” and lists “Very warm” as a pro (see Where the sources disagree). We treat it as a test of the uninsulated sibling. Its tester wrote, “They’re lightweight for their size, stiff, and sit a little taller than most.” It also warned, “Wearing the Ursa feels a bit like wearing a hockey skate, and this can take some getting used to if you haven’t hunted in mountaineering boots before.”

The seller on Amazon is OutdoorEquipped, a third-party store that ships its own stock.

        Verdict

Irish Setter writes of the VaprTrek, “High-rebound sugarcane EVA material in the sole is both lightweight and sustainable,” and its Amazon listing heads one feature “Lightweight Comfortability.” The version we link is style 3943: an 8 in boot in Mossy Oak Country Roots camo leather and abrasion-resistant nylon, with 400 g of PrimaLoft, Irish Setter’s UltraDry waterproofing, a padded ankle pod, ScentBan scent control and a Rubber Hex Lite outsole. Irish Setter publishes no weight. Sizes run men’s 6 to 15 in regular (D) and wide (EE).

MidCurrent’s Johnny Sain reviewed the uninsulated VaprTrek, the same boot without the 400 g of insulation: “I selected the uninsulated version (seemed appropriate for the Southern climate) in size 11 D.” On comfort: “I put them to the test on a short combo trip—deer scouting, squirrel hunting, and hiking to a creek for some smallmouth on the fly—and they were supremely comfortable right out of the box.” On water: “These boots aren’t designed for in-stream wading (they’re for getting to and from the creek, not for in-water use), and they’ve kept my feet 100 percent dry during a full day of trekking through dewy grass and necessary shallow-water fording.” On fit: “Right off the bat, I can say they run true to size, or maybe a hair smaller.”

          Verdict

upland and walking hunters who want a classic leather lace-up with light insulation for cool to cold days on the move.

$229.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Irish Setter writes of the insulated Wingshooter, “It’s surprisingly lightweight and extremely comfortable all day,” and its Amazon listing says, “This boot is surprisingly lightweight, and the sole includes a comfortable steel shank which provides more stable footing and helps support your feet and calves.” The version we link is style A0896: a 9 in boot in amber full-grain waterproof leather over Irish Setter’s UltraDry waterproofing, with 400 g of 3M Thinsulate Ultra, which Irish Setter describes as “thin, warm and lightweight.” It is Goodyear welted, so it can be resoled, and has a steel shank, a removable polyurethane footbed, a moisture-wicking nylon lining and the white Prairie outsole, which Irish Setter calls “debris-shedding.” Irish Setter publishes no weight. Sizes run men’s 7 to 14 in regular (D) and wide (EE).

We found no recent independent review of the insulated 9 in boot. HuntTested hunted ten days of upland in the uninsulated Wingshooter 9″ (style 894), the same boot without the insulation, and pointed cold-weather hunters to this one: “If you commonly hunt in the snow and cold, you may want to opt for Wingshooter Model 896 which includes 400 grams of insulation.” Its reviewer added, “For me, these boots did require a little bit of a break-in period to become totally comfortable.” HuntTested says it received product consideration. One owner who reviewed the 9″ 400g Wingshooter on Reddit in 2016 (a pair from before the current A0896 version) wrote, “in 16 degree weather my foot was warm while walking,” and warned that the sole slid on wet concrete. Neither names the size worn.

            Verdict

a 9 in leather upland boot with 400 g Thinsulate Ultra that Irish Setter calls “surprisingly lightweight,” at a mid-range tier, for bird and walking hunts in cool to cold weather.

              Pros

              • 400 g Thinsulate Ultra in a boot Irish Setter calls “surprisingly lightweight”
              • Goodyear welt, so it can be resoled
              • Wide (EE) sizing

              Cons

              • The outside review covers the uninsulated version; the one report on the 400 g boot is an owner’s from 2016
              • The Prairie outsole slid on wet concrete for that owner

The Lady EuroLight Hunter 300 is the women’s version of pick #1, same series: Gore Air-Fibre 300 insulation, a Gore-Tex lining, a 9 in waxed full grain nubuck upper, the Duo-Dur III outsole and the A/B flex rating. Its Amazon listing repeats Meindl’s “ULTRALIGHT DESIGN” heading: “Meindl’s lightest and most flexible insulated hunting boot – providing the perfect balance of support and flexibilty in an extremely lightweight hunting boot – all-day every-day comfort for those looking for an all-purpose hunting boot.” It comes in women’s 6 to 10 in a regular (B) width; Meindl says its boots run large.

Hunting Life pro-staff writer Giovanna Luciano wore the size we link: “My day-to-day shoes run from a women’s size 9-9.5, so I selected a size 10 as I prefer boots that lean toward wider sizes and the Meindl Eurolight boots fit just right without being either too loose or too constricting.” Note that she sized up, where Meindl advises a half size down. On weight she wrote, “Their light design allowed me to move through tall grass and brush with ease, and keep me from tiring out early in the week.” Her one complaint: “I consider myself to be averagely fit and strong for my age, but still couldn’t tighten the boot laces through the first few eyelets.” Meindl supplied her pair.

Meindl USA sells it on Amazon from its own storefront.

This is the women’s VaprTrek, style 3945, the same series as pick #5 on a women’s last. Sizes run women’s 5 to 11 in regular (B) and wide (D). Irish Setter publishes no weight.

We found no independent review of the women’s 400 g VaprTrek, so we lean on MidCurrent’s review of the men’s uninsulated VaprTrek, the same series; its reviewer wrote, “Right off the bat, I can say they run true to size, or maybe a hair smaller.”

Buying Guide: Choosing a Light Insulated Hunting Boot

How much insulation for how you hunt

The boots here carry light insulation: 300 or 400 grams, or 3.5 mm of neoprene. Field & Stream ties the amount to how you hunt. For sitters: “Most opt for calf-high rubber boots with no less than 1,200-grams of Thinsulate insulation.” For hunters on the move: “Most on-the-go cold weather hunters prefer boots with 600 to 1,000 grams of Thinsulate insulation.” It also warns that 400 grams is too little once you stop moving in real cold. That makes these boots a fit for walking hunts, scouting and mild-to-cool sits, the end of the season where a heavy pac boot is more than you need. Picks for walking hunts: Meindl EuroLight Hunter 300, Danner Vital 8″ 400G, Irish Setter Wingshooter 9″ 400g.

Leather lace-ups or a rubber knee boot

A lace-up gives ankle support for walking and carrying loads; a rubber knee boot keeps water out higher up and helps on flooded ground. Hatch’s reviewer explained his choice of rubber for bowhunting: “Mostly it was because rubber-bottomed boots help lock up potential ground scent.” Taller lace-ups sit between the two: the Ursa LS stands 10 in. Picks: LaCrosse AeroHead Sport 16″ 3.5mm, LaCrosse Ursa LS 10″ 400G.

                  Fit and sizing

Boot makers size differently. Meindl advises a half size down; MidCurrent found the uninsulated VaprTrek true to size or a little small. Leave room for the socks you hunt in: Hatch’s reviewer sized up for thick wool socks, and Hunting Life’s reviewer sized up too. For women, our women’s merino wool socks guide covers the sock side. For wide feet, the Danner, Irish Setter, LaCrosse Ursa LS and men’s Meindl boots come in a wide width; the Lady EuroLight comes in one width, B. Picks for women: Meindl Lady EuroLight Hunter 300, Irish Setter VaprTrek Women’s 8″ 400g.

Waterproof membranes and what they promise

Gore-Tex (Meindl, LaCrosse Ursa), Danner Dry and Irish Setter’s UltraDry are membranes behind the upper; makers describe them as waterproof and breathable, and outside reviewers here report dry feet in slush, wet grass and rain. A membrane does not make a boot a wader: MidCurrent notes the VaprTrek is made for walking to and from the creek, not for standing in it. Leather uppers also need care to keep shedding water.

The rest of the cold-weather kit

Warm feet start with dry layers above them. For the clothes side, see our guides to camo for deer hunting and hunting camo patterns, cold weather hiking pants for the walk in, and ice fishing suits if you sit still on very cold days.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

                  Q. Are 400-gram boots warm enough for hunting?

For walking hunts and mild-to-cool sits, often yes; for long still sits in real cold, usually not. Field & Stream says most active cold-weather hunters prefer 600 to 1,000 grams and warns 400 grams is too little once you stop moving, and Better Trail’s tester felt a chill in the Vital 400G below the mid-20s Fahrenheit when stationary. The boots in this guide suit the moving end of hunting.

                  Q. What makes a hunting boot lightweight?

The parts the makers point to: modest synthetic insulation (300 to 400 g), midsoles their makers call lightweight, such as Danner’s Plyolite or Irish Setter’s sugarcane EVA, nylon panels in place of all-leather uppers, and, in rubber boots, a polyurethane shell such as LaCrosse’s AeroForm. Each review quotes how its maker describes the boot.

                  Q. Why don’t you list boot weights?

The makers here either publish no weight or publish a per-pair weight without the size it was weighed at. A size 13 weighs more than a size 8 of the same boot, so comparing those figures across brands would mislead.

                  Q. What are good lightweight insulated hunting boots for women?

This guide has two: the Meindl Lady EuroLight Hunter 300, a 9 in leather boot with 300 g Gore insulation in women’s 6 to 10, and the Irish Setter VaprTrek Women’s 8″ 400g, a camo boot with 400 g PrimaLoft in women’s 5 to 11, regular and wide.

                  Q. Do I need waterproof insulated hunting boots?

In fall and winter, wet feet get cold feet, so the boots here are all built to keep water out, by membrane or by rubber and neoprene. Makers’ “100% waterproof” claims are their own; the reviewers quoted here report dry feet in their conditions, not in every condition.

                  The bottom line

                  Final Verdict

For a light leather boot to walk and hunt in all day, the Meindl EuroLight Hunter 300 (check price) carries 300 g Gore insulation in a 9 in boot Meindl calls its lightest insulated hunting boot. For a mid-height 400 g boot at an entry-level tier, the Danner Vital 8″ 400G (check price) pairs Thinsulate Ultra with a midsole Danner calls lightweight. For wet ground and stand sits, the LaCrosse AeroHead Sport 16″ 3.5mm (check price) is a rubber-and-neoprene knee boot LaCrosse sells as light for long hauls. The Ursa LS, VaprTrek, Wingshooter and the two women’s boots cover a stiff late-season boot, a camo lace-up, a classic leather upland boot and women’s fits, and each review names its sources and the size we link.
