The short answer
For one light rod that handles streams and ponds, look at the Shimano Sensilite A 6′ L fast; for tiny creeks and ultralight lures, the St. Croix Trout Series 5’6″ UL fast; and for a premium ultralight rod built in the USA, the G. Loomis GCX Lite 6′ UL fast. The other five cover river lures, backpacking, brushy creeks, lakes and long float rods.
Our verdict
Trout Spinning Rods: Top Picks at a Glance
Trout lures are small. A 1/32 oz jig, a size 0 spinner and a 1/8 oz spoon all need a spinning rod light enough to cast them and soft enough at the tip to feel a trout pick them up. This guide compares eight spinning rods from seven brands for stocked ponds, small streams, big rivers and lakes. Each one is linked as one exact length, power and action, and each carries the line and lure ratings its maker prints for that model, so you can match the rod to the water you fish and the lures you throw.
We chose rods rather than rod-and-reel combos because the pages ranking for this search (Outdoor Life’s trout rod guide, the St. Croix and Fenwick trout rod pages, and the r/troutfishing thread) compare rods. For the reel, our spinning reel size guide covers the small sizes that suit these rods, and our trout fishing line guide covers the 2 to 8 lb lines most of them are rated for.

Detailed Reviews of the Eight Trout Spinning Rods
Shimano Sensilite A, All-Round Light Rod
6' L fast · Blank not published
Anglers who want one budget trout rod for spinners, small spoons and bait in streams and stocked ponds.
$49.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:55 UTCVerdict
A 6′ light, fast rod rated for 1/16 to 1/4 oz lures, for anglers who want one inexpensive trout rod for spinners, small spoons and bait in streams and ponds.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Outdoor Life: 6 ft light fast (model code and generation not stated).
Shimano’s store lists the SENSILITE 60 L SPN A as a 6’0″, one-piece, light-power, fast-action rod rated for 4-8 lb mono or 4-15 lb PowerPro braid and 1/16 to 1/4 oz lures. Shimano describes the series as “lightweight, sensitive, and versatile in key finesse trout and panfish situations”, with full cork grips, aluminum oxide guides and a reel seat with a cork insert. Shimano lists it at $49.99.
Why it suits trout: Outdoor Life named the Sensilite its “Best All-Rounder” trout rod, and its spec box gives the same 6-foot length, light power, fast action, 4-8 lb line and 1/16-1/4 oz lure figures as the model we link. Its reviewer wrote: “If you’re looking for this sort of Swiss Army-style trout rod, then the Shimano Sensilite is about as good as you can get.” The same review notes a limit: the rod “lacks the backbone to cast heavy lures or baits, and it feels a bit undergunned when you hook into a big one.” One detail differs: Outdoor Life’s picks list names the Sensilite A, but its feature list says “Cork Split Grip Handles” where Shimano lists full cork grips. We also link this rod in our spinning rods under $100 guide; it earns a place here because Shimano builds the series for trout and panfish.

- Linked model: Shimano Sensilite A SENS60LA, 6’0″, 1 piece, sold by SHIMANO FISH (Shimano’s storefront)
- Power and action: light, fast (Shimano)
- Line: 4-8 lb mono, 4-15 lb PowerPro braid (Shimano)
- Lure: 1/16-1/4 oz (Shimano)

- Guides: aluminum oxide (Shimano)
- Handle and seat: full cork grips, reel seat with cork insert (Shimano)
- Weight: not published in what we could read
- Warranty: not published in what we could read
- Maker list price: Shimano lists it at $49.99
Pros
- Light, fast one-piece rod rated 1/16-1/4 oz for spinners and small spoons
- Outdoor Life’s “Best All-Rounder” trout rod, at the same length and power we link
- Entry-level tier, sold by Shimano’s own Amazon storefront
Cons
- Outdoor Life found it short of backbone for heavy lures and big trout
- One-piece 6′ rod is awkward to carry on a plane or in a pack
- Warranty not published in what we could read

St. Croix Trout Series, Small-Stream Ultralight
Small-stream anglers who throw tiny jigs, small spinners and little crankbaits for brook trout and stocked rainbows in tight cover.
$145.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:51 UTCVerdict
A 5’6″ ultralight, fast two-piece rod rated for 1/32 to 3/16 oz lures, for anglers who fish small creeks with tiny jigs, spinners and small crankbaits.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/Fishing_Gear owners: 5’6″ ultralight.
St. Croix lists the TFS56ULF2 as a 5’6″, ultra-light, fast-action, two-piece rod rated for 2-6 lb line and 1/32 to 3/16 oz lures, and describes the Trout Series as “trout-focused”. St. Croix’s factory store adds an SCII carbon blank with SCVI reinforcements, Sea Guide Atlas guides with stainless steel rings and frames, a Sea Guide NPS reel seat, split-grip EVA handles and a 5-year warranty, and says the series is “Designed in Park Falls and handcrafted in Fresnillo, Mexico.” The maker’s Amazon listing gives the rod weight as 2.4 oz. St. Croix lists it at $155.
Related guide: Best Ultra Light Spinning Rod for Trout and Panfish: Maker-Rated UL Picks
Why it suits trout: No independent outlet we found reviewed this model, so the evidence is owner reports. In an r/Fishing_Gear thread on the Trout Series, one owner of this exact length and power wrote: “My 5’6′ UL trout series is one of my favorites.” The same owner lists three gripes: “its very whippy, the handle is almost completely plastic, and the guides are cheap,” and says it suits “tiny cranks, spinners, and drifting very small hooks” but not jerkbaits. Others in the thread disagree: one reply calls the steel guides and “hard plastic barrel handle” reasons to stay away, and another angler returned a St. Croix trout and panfish rod as “too limp”. Read those reports as individual opinions, not a test. Against the G. Loomis GCX Lite, which has the same 1/32-3/16 oz rating, the St. Croix breaks down into two pieces, with EVA rather than cork grips.

- Warranty: 5 years (St. Croix)
- Maker list price: St. Croix lists it at $155
Pros
- Ultralight fast blank rated from 1/32 oz for tiny jigs and size 0 spinners
- Two-piece 5’6″ rod for tight, brushy streams
- 5-year warranty and a 2.4 oz listed weight
Cons
- Owners split on it: some like the whippy tip, others call it too soft and the guides cheap
- 3/16 oz upper limit rules out heavier spoons and jerkbaits
- No independent review found; the evidence is owner reports

G. Loomis GCX Lite, Premium Ultralight
6' UL fast · Blank not published
Trout anglers who fish small spinners and light jigs often enough to want a premium cork-handled ultralight with a lifetime warranty.
$295.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:53 UTCVerdict
A 6′ ultralight, fast one-piece rod with cork grips and a limited lifetime warranty, for anglers who want a premium, US-built ultralight trout rod.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Outdoor Life: 6 ft light fast (GCX 720S SR).
G. Loomis (sold through Shimano’s store) lists the GCX 7200S SR as a 6’0″, one-piece, ultra-light, fast-action rod rated for 2-6 lb mono and 1/32 to 3/16 oz lures. The series has SeaGuide aluminum oxide guides, premium cork handles and a Fuji reel seat, is “Handcrafted in Woodland, WA” and carries a limited lifetime warranty. G. Loomis lists it at $295. The Amazon listing’s detail block prints 6-12 lb line and an inshore saltwater target, which do not match the maker’s table, so we give G. Loomis’s figures.
Why it suits trout: Outdoor Life named the GCX Lite its “Best Overall” trout rod, but the model in its spec box is the 6-foot light, fast rod rated 1/16-5/16 oz (G. Loomis’s GCX 720S SR), not the 6-foot ultralight we link. That light model was not among the GCX Lite rods on Amazon when we checked. Its reviewer wrote: “As soon as I touched the Loomis GCX, I knew I had something special in my hands,” and named one downside, that it is a one-piece rod he could not fit in a backpack or suitcase. The ultralight we link shares the series’ guides, cork, Fuji seat and warranty but is rated for lighter lures (up to 3/16 oz against 5/16 oz). The buy box changed between our checks: MidwayUSA, a sporting retailer, held it once and SHIMANO FISH (Shimano’s storefront) once, both at the maker’s list price.
Specs (6′ UL fast, GCX 7200S SR):
- Linked model: G. Loomis GCX Lite GCX 7200S SR (12986-01), 6’0″, 1 piece, sold by MidwayUSA, Inc. or SHIMANO FISH at our checks
- Power and action: ultra light, fast (G. Loomis)
- Line: 2-6 lb mono (G. Loomis)
- Lure: 1/32-3/16 oz (G. Loomis)
- Blank: material not published on the G. Loomis page we read

- Handle and seat: premium cork, Fuji reel seat (G. Loomis)
- Weight: not published in what we could read
- Warranty: limited lifetime (G. Loomis)
- Maker list price: G. Loomis lists it at $295
Pros
- Cork-handled ultralight blank rated 1/32-3/16 oz, handcrafted in Woodland, Washington
- Limited lifetime warranty from G. Loomis
- Series named Outdoor Life’s “Best Overall” trout rod
Cons
- Premium tier
- Outdoor Life fished the 6′ light, not this 6′ ultralight
- One-piece rod, hard to travel with
Who should buy it
Trout anglers who fish small spinners and light jigs often enough to want a premium cork-handled ultralight with a lifetime warranty.
Pflueger President XT, River Lure Rod
6'6" ML extra-fast · 24/30-ton graphite
Anglers who mostly cast spinners, spoons and small jerkbaits for trout in rivers and larger streams.
$94.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:53 UTCVerdict
A 6’6″ medium-light, extra-fast two-piece rod rated for 1/16 to 3/8 oz lures, for anglers who cast spinners, spoons and small jerkbaits for trout in rivers and bigger water.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Outdoor Life: 6.5 ft medium light extra fast (pieces not stated).
Pflueger lists the PFLPXT66ML-XFS2 as a 6’6″, medium-light, extra-fast, two-piece rod rated for 4-10 lb line and 1/16 to 3/8 oz lures. The series uses a 24 and 30 ton graphite blank, stainless steel guides with zirconia inserts and premium split cork grips, and Pflueger names trout and steelhead among the species it is built for. Pflueger lists it at $94.99.
Why it suits trout: Outdoor Life picked the President XT as its “Best for Lures” trout rod, and its spec box gives 6.5 feet, medium-light power, extra-fast action and 4-10 lb line, the same figures as the rod we link; it does not say how many pieces its rod had. Its reviewer wrote: “Whether you’re ripping spinners and spoons through heavy currents or twitching and pausing jerkbaits through backwaters, the Pfluger President XT is the perfect rod for all your favorite trout lures.” He also notes a limit: “it’s not very sensitive and not the best choice for fishing in extremely cold water for sluggish, slow-striking trout.” Against the Sensilite, the President XT is a step up in power and is rated for lures up to 3/8 oz rather than 1/4 oz.
Specs (6’6″ ML extra-fast, PFLPXT66ML-XFS2):
- Linked model: Pflueger President XT PFLPXT66ML-XFS2, 6’6″, 2 pieces, sold by Amazon.com
- Power and action: medium light, extra fast (Pflueger; the Amazon detail block says fast and 1 piece)
- Line: 4-10 lb (Pflueger)
- Lure: 1/16-3/8 oz (Pflueger)
- Blank: 24/30-ton graphite (Pflueger)
- Guides: stainless steel with zirconia inserts (Pflueger)
- Handle and seat: premium split cork, custom Pflueger reel seat (Pflueger; seat from the Amazon listing)
- Weight: not published in what we could read
- Warranty: not published in what we could read
- Maker list price: Pflueger lists it at $94.99
Pros
- Medium-light extra-fast blank rated 1/16-3/8 oz for spinners, spoons and small jerkbaits
- Outdoor Life’s “Best for Lures” pick, at the same length, power and action
- Two pieces, split cork grips and a mid-range tier
Cons
- Outdoor Life found it “not very sensitive” for slow, cold-water bites
- More power than small-stream trout need
- Outdoor Life did not state the piece count of its rod
Who should buy it
Anglers who mostly cast spinners, spoons and small jerkbaits for trout in rivers and larger streams.
Ugly Stik GX2 Travel, Packable Backcountry Rod
5' L 3-piece · Graphite and fiberglass
Anglers who carry a rod into the backcountry or on trips and want a tough, packable rod for small trout.
$59.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:53 UTCVerdict
A 5′ light rod that breaks down into three pieces, for anglers who hike, paddle or ride to trout water and want a tough rod that fits in a pack.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. OutdoorHub: 5 ft light three-piece.
Ugly Stik lists the USGXSP503L as a 5′, light-power, three-piece travel rod rated for 4-10 lb line and 1/16 to 3/8 oz lures; it does not publish an action. The GX2 combines graphite and fiberglass (“Ugly Tech”), with Ugly Stik’s Clear Tip, one-piece stainless steel guides, a shrink-tube handle and a 10-year rod warranty. The Amazon listing’s detail block says 7-year warranty while its bullets say 10 years; we give the maker’s 10. Ugly Stik lists it at $59.95.
Why it suits trout: OutdoorHub reviewed this exact rod: “Although this review focuses on the Ugly Stik GX2 three-piece 5’ light fishing rod, I think it’s worth saying how I ended up interested in this rod in the first place.” Its reviewer fished it for brook trout and writes: “It’s a lightweight rod that is made for panfish, brook trout and other smaller fare that you’ll find in streams and rivers.” He classes the action as moderate and gives the trade-off plainly: “With this rod, you can’t cast as far or as accurately as even a lightweight two-piece.” Outdoor Life also picked a GX2 as its “Best Backcountry Rod”, but a 5.5-foot light two-piece, not this travel model. The GX2 family also appears in our spinning rods under $100 guide as a 6’6″ medium two-piece; this three-piece light model is the one sized for trout.
Specs (5′ L, 3 pieces, USGXSP503L):
- Linked model: Ugly Stik GX2 Travel USGXSP503L, 5′, 3 pieces, New Model, sold by Amazon.com
- Power and action: light (Ugly Stik); action not published (OutdoorHub’s reviewer calls it moderate)
- Line: 4-10 lb (Ugly Stik)
- Lure: 1/16-3/8 oz (Ugly Stik)
- Blank: graphite and fiberglass, Clear Tip (Ugly Stik)
- Guides: Ugly Tuff one-piece stainless steel (Ugly Stik)
- Handle and seat: shrink-tube EVA handle, ergonomic reel seat with exposed blank (Ugly Stik)
- Weight: not published in what we could read
- Warranty: 10 years (Ugly Stik; the Amazon detail block says 7)
- Maker list price: Ugly Stik lists it at $59.95
Pros
- Three-piece graphite and fiberglass rod that packs small for hikes, canoe trips and travel
- Reviewed at this exact model by OutdoorHub, which fished it for brook trout
- 10-year warranty from Ugly Stik and an entry-level tier
Cons
- OutdoorHub found it casts shorter and less accurately than a two-piece rod
- Action not published by the maker
- Amazon’s title names only the family; the variant is in the variation selector

Fenwick HMG Trout & Panfish, Brushy Creek Short Rod
5' L moderate-fast · 30/24-ton graphite
Creek anglers who fish brushy banks with spinners and small spoons and want a short one-piece rod with a lifetime warranty.
$169.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:56 UTCVerdict
A 5′ light, moderate-fast one-piece rod rated for 1/16 to 3/8 oz lures, for anglers who fish overgrown creeks with spinners and small spoons and want a lifetime warranty.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/Fishing_Gear owner: HMG Trout & Panfish three-piece.
Fenwick lists the HMGT50L-MFS as a 5′, light-power, moderate-fast, one-piece rod rated for 1/16 to 3/8 oz lures, and Pure Fishing’s store (Fenwick’s parent company) gives its line rating as 4-8 lb. The series uses a 30/24 ton graphite blend, titanium guide frames with thin zirconia inserts, multi-material full-length grips and a Fenwick reel seat, with a limited lifetime warranty. Fenwick lists it at $169.95. The Amazon listing gives no model number; its title reads “5FT Light Trout & Panfish”, which matches this model.
Why it suits trout: We found no independent test of this length, so the evidence is owner reports. An owner of the HMG Trout & Panfish three-piece, a sibling of this rod, wrote on r/Fishing_Gear: “This rod claims to be moderate fast, and it is.” The same owner found it whippy enough for 1/16 oz lures, praised the titanium guides and cork, and warned that the grip is only comfortable if you hold the rod in a “textbook” grip. In the r/troutfishing thread that ranks for this search, another angler says the HMG is “to heavy of action to throw 1/32 or 1/64 jigs” (model and generation not stated). Against the St. Croix Trout Series, the HMG is shorter, one piece and light rather than ultralight power, rated for lures up to 3/8 oz rather than 3/16 oz.
Specs (5′ L moderate-fast, HMGT50L-MFS):
- Linked model: Fenwick HMG Trout & Panfish HMGT50L-MFS, 5′, 1 piece, sold by MidwayUSA, Inc.
- Power and action: light, moderate fast (Fenwick)
- Line: 4-8 lb (Pure Fishing)
- Lure: 1/16-3/8 oz (Fenwick)
- Blank: 30/24-ton graphite blend with reinforcing resin (Fenwick)
- Guides: titanium frames with thin zirconia inserts (Fenwick)
- Handle and seat: multi-material full-length grips, Fenwick reel seat (Fenwick)
- Weight: not published in what we could read
- Warranty: limited lifetime (Fenwick)
- Maker list price: Fenwick lists it at $169.95
Pros
- Short 5′ light blank rated 1/16-3/8 oz for casting under branches on small creeks
- Titanium guide frames and a limited lifetime warranty
- Moderate-fast action that an owner of the three-piece sibling says matches Fenwick’s label
Cons
- An owner found the reel-seat grip awkward unless held in a “textbook” grip
- One r/troutfishing angler finds HMG rods too stiff for 1/32 oz jigs
- Sold by MidwayUSA, not Amazon.com, at our check
Who should buy it
Creek anglers who fish brushy banks with spinners and small spoons and want a short one-piece rod with a lifetime warranty.
Okuma SST Kokanee/Trout, Lake and Pond Rod
Lake and pond anglers who cast spoons, PowerBait rigs and casting bubbles for stocked trout and kokanee.
$71.64 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:55 UTCVerdict
A 7′ light, moderate two-piece rod rated for 1/8 to 3/4 oz, for anglers who fish trout from lake and pond banks or boats with spoons, bait rigs and casting bubbles.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, previous generation. Trout and Steelhead: SST New Generation trout models (length and power not stated).
Okuma lists the SST-S-702La as a 7’0″, light-power, two-piece spinning rod with a moderate (“M”) taper, rated for 4-10 lb line and 1/8 to 3/4 oz lures. The SST “a” series uses Okuma IM-8 graphite, stainless steel guide frames with Zirconium inserts and custom reel seats. Okuma lists it at $76.99. The sources differ on three points: the Amazon listing’s detail block says one piece and 2-8 lb line, and its bullets describe a 24/30-ton carbon blank; we give Okuma’s figures (two pieces, 4-10 lb, IM-8).
Why it suits trout: Trout and Steelhead, a river fishing guide’s rod article, recommends Okuma’s earlier SST New Generation trout rods, the series before Okuma’s 2022 re-designed SST “a” that we link: “Similar to the SST rod above, but this is designed specifically for trout and it comes with a cheaper price tag.” It says they come in “lengths from 5’6″ to 8 feet in ultralight and light”, but does not name a length, so this is a series-level recommendation for the earlier generation, not for the SST “a” itself. The seller at our check was Sportco Wholesale, a third-party seller, below Okuma’s list price.
Specs (7′ L moderate, SST-S-702La):
- Linked model: Okuma SST “a” Kokanee/Trout SST-S-702La, 7’0″, 2 pieces, sold by Sportco Wholesale
- Power and action: light, moderate (Okuma; the Amazon listing says medium)
- Line: 4-10 lb (Okuma; the Amazon listing says 2-8 lb)
- Lure: 1/8-3/4 oz (Okuma)
- Blank: IM-8 graphite (Okuma; the Amazon listing says 24/30-ton carbon)
- Guides: stainless steel frames with Zirconium inserts (Okuma)
- Handle and seat: split cork grips (Amazon listing), custom reel seat (Okuma)
- Weight: not published in what we could read
- Warranty: not published in what we could read
- Maker list price: Okuma lists it at $76.99
Pros
- 7′ light rod with a moderate taper, rated 1/8-3/4 oz for longer casts with spoons, bait and bubbles
- Entry-level tier; a river guide recommends the previous SST generation for trout
- Two pieces, with braid-ready Zirconium guide inserts
Cons
- Too much rod for 1/32 oz jigs and tiny creeks
- Amazon listing and Okuma disagree on pieces, line rating and blank
- Sold by Sportco Wholesale, not Amazon.com, at our check

Lake and pond anglers who cast spoons, PowerBait rigs and casting bubbles for stocked trout and kokanee.
Okuma Guide Select Pro Trout, Long River Float Rod
River anglers who float fish, drift baits or cast lures across wide water and want a long, light-line trout rod.
$128.98 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:53 UTCVerdict
An 8′ ultralight two-piece rod rated for 2-6 lb line and 1/8 to 1/2 oz, for anglers who float fish, drift and cast lures for trout on bigger rivers.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Trout and Steelhead: 8 ft Guide Select Pro Trout.
Okuma lists the GSP-S-802UL as an 8’0″, ultra-light, two-piece spinning rod with a moderate to moderate-fast (“M/MF”) taper, rated for 2-6 lb line and 1/8 to 1/2 oz lures. The Guide Select Pro series uses a 30/40-ton carbon blank, SeaGuide 316 stainless guide frames and Fuji reel seats; Okuma says its “Trout rods feature fore and rear cork grips”, and the series carries a limited lifetime warranty. Okuma lists it at $178.24. The Amazon listing’s bullets describe 3K woven carbon grips and ALPS guides, which is series wording for other Guide Select Pro models; we give Okuma’s trout-model description.
Why it suits trout: Trout and Steelhead, written by a river guide, recommends the Guide Select Pro Trout for “small to mid-sized rivers” and names this length: “The 8-foot length can be used for lures or float fishing.” The same guide prefers the 7’6″ sibling “for open rivers when casting lures”. An 8-foot rod is long for brushy creeks, so this is a second rod for larger water rather than a starter rod. The other seven rods here run 5 to 7 feet.
Specs (8′ UL, GSP-S-802UL):
- Linked model: Okuma Guide Select Pro Trout GSP-S-802UL, 8’0″, 2 pieces, sold by Amazon.com
- Power and action: ultra light, moderate to moderate-fast (Okuma; the Amazon listing says fast)
- Line: 2-6 lb (Okuma)
- Lure: 1/8-1/2 oz (Okuma)
- Blank: 30/40-ton carbon (Okuma)
- Guides: SeaGuide 316 stainless frames (Okuma; the Amazon listing says ALPS)
- Handle and seat: fore and rear cork grips, Fuji reel seat (Okuma)
- Weight: not published in what we could read
- Warranty: limited lifetime (Okuma)
- Maker list price: Okuma lists it at $178.24
Pros
- 8′ ultralight carbon blank for float fishing, drifting and long casts with light line on rivers
- Named at this length by a river guide’s rod article
- Limited lifetime warranty and Fuji reel seat
Cons
- Long for small, brushy streams
- Amazon listing and Okuma disagree on grips, guides and action
- 1/8 oz lower limit rules out the smallest jigs
Who should buy it
River anglers who float fish, drift baits or cast lures across wide water and want a long, light-line trout rod.
Choosing a Trout Spinning Rod for Your Water
Power and lure rating
Match the maker’s lure rating to what you throw. The two ultralight rods rated from 1/32 oz, the St. Croix and the G. Loomis, suit tiny jigs and size 0 spinners; the light rods rated from 1/16 oz cover most spinners and small spoons; and the Okuma SST, rated to 3/4 oz, handles heavier spoons and bait rigs on lakes. Outdoor Life explains the difference: “Power is how much force it takes to bend the rod, and action is how and where the rod bends.” On r/troutfishing, one angler advises “If you’re targeting trout only, I recommend ultralight over light. Trout lures are just that light.”
Picks: St. Croix Trout Series and G. Loomis GCX Lite for the lightest lures; Shimano Sensilite A and Fenwick HMG for spinners and small spoons; Okuma SST for heavier spoons and bait.
Length by water
Trout and Steelhead’s guide sorts rods by water: “4 to 6’6 rods: Small rivers, small fish, tight cover, small baits and lures,” while “7 to 8 foot rods: Most rivers, good for casting lures and baits.” It adds: “If I had to choose one rod as a multi-purpose rod for everything, I’d go with a 7-foot light or ultralight.” On r/troutfishing, one angler says “Short and light is where it’s at for trout,” and another replies that a very short rod will not suit “a decent sized lake or pond or a wide river. 5′ to 8′ depending on use case.”
Picks: Fenwick HMG, Ugly Stik GX2 Travel and St. Croix Trout Series for small creeks; Okuma SST for lakes; Okuma Guide Select Pro Trout for big rivers.
Action
Outdoor Life writes that fast-action rods bend “at just the tip”, while slow-action rods “bend throughout their length”. Trout and Steelhead’s author writes that “Most ultralight small trout rods will be fast-action rods,” and that he is “not a huge fan” of extra-fast rods for trout. Four of these rods are fast or extra fast in their makers’ tables; the Fenwick is moderate-fast, the Okuma SST moderate, the Guide Select Pro Trout moderate to moderate-fast, and Ugly Stik does not publish an action for the GX2 Travel.
Picks: Pflueger President XT for an extra-fast lure rod; Okuma SST for a moderate rod that lobs bait and bubbles.
One piece, two or three
One-piece rods (the Sensilite, GCX Lite and HMG here) have no joints but are awkward to travel with; Outdoor Life’s reviewer says the GCX Lite’s one-piece build kept it out of his backpack. The St. Croix, Pflueger and both Okumas break into two pieces, and the Ugly Stik into three.
Picks: Ugly Stik GX2 Travel for packing; St. Croix Trout Series for a two-piece ultralight.
Line and reel
Five of these rods are rated for 2-6 lb or 4-8 lb line and three for up to 10 lb, the range our trout fishing line guide covers. On r/troutfishing, owners describe pairing ultralight rods with 1000 to 3000 size reels; one writes “Any UL rod around 6’-7’ with a 1000 reel.” Our spinning reel size guide explains what those sizes mean. If you also fish Ned rigs for bass, that needs a stiffer medium-light rod; see our Ned rig rod guide.

Picks: Okuma Guide Select Pro Trout and St. Croix Trout Series for 2-6 lb line; Pflueger President XT and Okuma SST for up to 10 lb.
How We Picked These Trout Rods
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.
The tests each rod had to pass
- A spinning rod in ultralight, light or medium-light power that its maker rates for trout-sized lures and line
- The exact length, power and action linked, with the maker’s line and lure ratings for that model
- Stocked on Amazon, in stock and new, with any seller other than Amazon.com named in the review
- Several brands, a spread of price tiers and distinct roles by water type; no two picks of the same model line

Which sources we used, and how much each counts
Each review carries an Evidence line. “Independently reviewed, exact model” means an independent outlet named the model we link (OutdoorHub for the Ugly Stik GX2 Travel, Trout and Steelhead for the 8-foot Guide Select Pro Trout). “Same series” means the outlet covered another model in the line or did not say which one: Outdoor Life’s GCX Lite was the 6′ light, not our 6′ ultralight; its Sensilite and President XT match our length and power but it does not give a model code or generation; Trout and Steelhead names no length for the SST and describes the earlier SST New Generation. The St. Croix and Fenwick rest on owner reports. Specs come from each maker’s own page or store; where the Amazon listing disagrees, the review says so and gives the maker’s figure.
What r/troutfishing owners recommend
In the r/troutfishing thread that ranks for this search, a new angler choosing between two Fenwick HMG models heard, in the replies we read, most often about the Okuma Celilo, with mentions of the Shakespeare Micro Series and the Fenwick HMG. One owner writes: “I’ve caught way more trout on the $30 rod/reel combo from the sporting goods store than I have on my fly rig.” The Celilo showed only lead-time stock on Amazon and the Shakespeare Micro was out of stock when we checked, so neither is a pick. These are individual reports, not a test.
Seller and stock checks
Outgearly accepts any Amazon seller, with Amazon.com and reputable sellers preferred. The St. Croix, Pflueger, Ugly Stik and Guide Select Pro Trout are sold by Amazon.com and the Sensilite by Shimano’s own storefront. The GCX Lite was sold by MidwayUSA or SHIMANO FISH (the buy box changed between checks), the Fenwick by MidwayUSA and the Okuma SST by Sportco Wholesale. Several listings showed limited stock when we checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the best spin rod for trout fishing?
It depends on the water. Outdoor Life named the G. Loomis GCX Lite its “Best Overall” trout rod and the Shimano Sensilite its “Best All-Rounder”. For one rod that covers streams and ponds, a 6-foot light rod rated near 1/16-1/4 oz, such as the Sensilite, is a sound starting point; for tiny creeks, an ultralight such as the St. Croix Trout Series.
Q. What size spinning rod is best for trout fishing?
Trout and Steelhead suggests 4 to 6’6″ rods for small rivers and tight cover and 7 to 8 foot rods for most rivers. Power matters as much: trout rods are usually ultralight or light, sometimes medium-light for bigger rivers. These eight run from 5 to 8 feet.
Q. What is the best spinning rod setup for trout fishing?
A common setup in the r/troutfishing thread is an ultralight or light rod with a 1000 to 3000 size reel and light line; one owner runs 8 lb braid to a 4 lb fluorocarbon leader. Match the rod’s lure rating to your spinners, spoons and jigs, and see our trout line guide for the line.
Q. Should I buy a trout rod and reel combo?
A combo is cheaper and quicker, and an r/troutfishing owner reports catching plenty of trout on a store combo. Buying the rod alone lets you choose its exact length, power and action, which is why this guide compares rods; our spinning reel size guide helps you add the reel.
Q. Can a trout spinning rod be used for bass?
A light trout rod will land small bass, but its lure rating limits what you can throw. The Pflueger President XT and Okuma SST are rated for heavier lures than the ultralights. For a rod built for bass finesse rigs, see our Ned rig rod guide or our spinning rods under $100.
The bottom line
Final Verdict
For one light rod that covers streams and ponds, the Shimano Sensilite A 6′ L fast (check price) is Outdoor Life’s “Best All-Rounder” at the length and power we link. For tiny creeks and ultralight lures, the St. Croix Trout Series 5’6″ UL fast (check price) is rated from 1/32 oz and breaks into two pieces. For a premium cork-handled ultralight with a lifetime warranty, the G. Loomis GCX Lite 6′ UL fast (check price) belongs to the series Outdoor Life named its overall pick. Add the Pflueger President XT 6’6″ ML extra-fast (check price) for river lures, the Ugly Stik GX2 Travel 5′ L 3-piece (check price) for the backcountry, the Fenwick HMG Trout & Panfish 5′ L moderate-fast (check price) for brushy creeks, the Okuma SST Kokanee/Trout 7′ L moderate (check price) for lakes and ponds and the Okuma Guide Select Pro Trout 8′ UL (check price) for float fishing big rivers. Whichever you choose, match its lure rating to the lures you throw.
