Fly Fishing Sun Masks: 5 Picks Compared

The short answer

The Simms SunGaiter is Simms’ tall-cut UPF 50+ gaiter with laser-cut breathing holes, the Buff CoolNet UV is a tube whose UPF 50 claim names its test standard, and the Simms Bugstopper SunGaiter adds Insect Shield treatment for buggy water; the KastKing Ultimate Angler and Bassdash Breathable Gaiter cover the entry tier.

Our verdict

Our Top Picks

A fly fishing sun mask is a tube of stretch fabric that pulls up over the nose and down over the neck and ears; shops and makers also sell it as a neck gaiter or a “buff”. This guide compares five of them that their makers sell for fishing, by what each maker publishes (the UPF rating and the standard behind it, fabric, cooling and insect claims), next to what a fly shop, a maker’s buyer and r/flyfishing posters say. Each pick links one colour or pattern on Amazon; the review names it. Hats, sun hoodies, sunglasses and sunscreen are not covered here.

Price tier

Price tier: $ = entry level, $$ = mid-range, $$$ = premium, relative to the sun masks in this guide. Live Amazon prices are in the comparison table.

What Makes a Sun Mask a Fly Fishing One?

None of the makers’ pages we read is written only for fly fishing; each is sold for fishing, and Simms’ site lists “Fly Fishing Classes” among its fishing experiences. Royal Gorge Anglers, a fly shop, lists Simms among the brands in its sun masks category, and Ed’s Fly Shop sells the Simms SunGaiter. The fly-fishing case comes from anglers. In an r/flyfishing thread from October 2015, one poster, a guide, writes: “As a guide I don’t want the scent or the grease on me that comes with sunscreen or insect repellent.” Another says: “Sometimes the “hatch” is a bloodsucking biting swarm of bugs a million strong.”

Related guide: Fly Fishing Rod Holders: 8 Picks Compared

Three things separate the five. The first is the UPF claim: in the pages we read, Buff names a test standard and Simms, KastKing and Bassdash do not. The second is shape: both Simms gaiters are described with a tall cut that goes over a hat, and the other three are described as tubes or gaiters without that claim. The third is the fabric treatment: Simms’ Bugstopper lists an insect treatment, and the pages for the other four do not. Our fly fishing for beginners guide covers the rest of a first kit, how to wear fly fishing waders covers layering under waders, and our wading boot size guide covers fitting the boots that go with them.

How These Five Sun Masks Were Picked

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.

What each sun mask had to clear

  • A face-and-neck tube or gaiter that its maker sells for fishing and rates for UV protection.
  • A colour in stock on Amazon whose Amazon product record names that colour, so the link opens the colour we describe.
  • UPF, fabric and cooling claims copied from the maker’s own page, or labelled “Amazon listing” or “retailer” where the maker’s page does not describe the colour we link; anything the maker does not publish is marked “not published”.
  • A distinct job among the picks (shape, insect treatment, price tier) and a named source on how it holds up, graded by who wrote it.
Where the evidence comes from and what anglers keep saying

Where the evidence comes from

We found no independent test of any of the five. The Simms SunGaiter rests on its Amazon listing and on Tackle Warehouse’s retailer listing for the same item number; the Bugstopper rests on Simms’ page. Buff’s evidence is r/flyfishing posters, two of whom name Buff. KastKing’s is a buyer review on KastKing’s own page, and the Bassdash rests on Bassdash’s own page. Two limits apply. First, for the two Simms picks the maker pages show something other than what we link: Simms’ Bugstopper page shows Dolomite, not Cinder, and we have assumed the fabric is shared across colours (Tackle Warehouse’s Cinder listing, a retailer’s, gives the same 92% polyester / 8% spandex); Simms’ SunGaiter page describes the 2026 update, which the colour we link appears to predate, so we give only what that colour’s listings say. Second, three of the four makers (Simms, KastKing and Bassdash) name no test standard behind their UPF number.

What anglers keep saying

The r/flyfishing thread from October 2015 ranks for this search. Posters give four reasons: bugs, sun, the scent and grease of sunscreen, and cold. One says: “I never bought in to the buff thing until I randomly bought one at a fly shop on the North Platte in WY.” Another poster wears one around the neck and writes: “It does help with the bugs too.” The thread is more than ten years old and names Buff, not a model.

Detailed Reviews of the 5 Sun Masks

Simms SunGaiter

Back Eddy Willow · SolarFlex stretch fabric

Anglers who fish hot, open water in a hat and want a tall-cut gaiter from a fly-fishing brand.

$26.97 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 10:00 UTC

Verdict

Simms’ tall gaiter with laser-cut breathing holes, for anglers who want a cut that goes over a hat, from a fly-fishing company.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Amazon listing and Tackle Warehouse listing (item 10490-1243-00).

We link Back Eddy Willow. Its Amazon listing says the gaiter is “Built with SolarFlex UPF 50+ fabric, shielding your face, neck, and ears from harmful UV rays during long days on the water,” that “Laser-cut breathing holes enhance airflow, reducing heat buildup and fogging while maintaining coverage,” and that it is “Designed with a tall shape that pulls up over your nose and tucks securely into your collar, with extra height in back to fit under or over a hat.” Tackle Warehouse, a retailer, lists the same colour under the same item number (10490-1243-00) with these features: “UPF 50 sun protection,” “Quick-dry SolarFlex stretch fabrics,” “Laser-cut breathing holes,” “Longer cape for better coverage,” “Tall enough to fit over fishing caps,” “One size fits most” and “1.6oz.” The two listings differ on the rating: Amazon says UPF 50+, Tackle Warehouse UPF 50. Neither gives a fabric blend or names a UPF test standard. Amazon.com held the buy box when we checked on 25 October 2026.

This colour appears to be the earlier SunGaiter. Simms’ SunGaiter page now describes a version “Updated for 2026 with mapped cooling technology and enhanced ventilation.” Amazon gives August 12, 2025 as this listing’s first-available date, neither listing for Back Eddy Willow mentions mapped cooling, and Back Eddy Willow is not among the colours on Ed’s Fly Shop’s page for the 2026 SunGaiter. So we do not give the 2026 page’s fabric, weight or cooling figures for this colour.

We found no independent test or owner report naming the SunGaiter, so the Evidence line rests on the two listings.

Against the Buff (pick 2), the SunGaiter is the tier up with a tall cut that goes over a hat and laser-cut breathing holes; the Buff is a plain tube with a named UPF standard that the SunGaiter’s listings do not give.

Specs (linked: Back Eddy Willow)

  • UPF: 50+ (Amazon listing); 50 (Tackle Warehouse); standard not stated
  • Fabric: SolarFlex stretch fabric; blend not published for this colour
  • Breathing: laser-cut breathing holes (Amazon listing; Tackle Warehouse)
  • Fit: tall shape with “extra height in back to fit under or over a hat” (Amazon listing); longer cape (Tackle Warehouse)
  • Weight: 1.6 oz (Tackle Warehouse, retailer listing)
  • Size: one size fits most (Tackle Warehouse)

Pros

  • Tall shape that the Amazon listing says fits “under or over a hat”
  • UPF 50+ SolarFlex fabric with laser-cut breathing holes, per the Amazon listing
  • Longer cape for coverage, per Tackle Warehouse’s listing

Cons

  • Premium tier among the five sun masks here
  • No UPF test standard or fabric blend is published for this colour
  • It appears to be the earlier version; Simms’ current page describes the 2026 update

Verdict

A plain, one-size tube whose UPF 50 claim names a test standard, for anglers who want that stated on the maker’s own page.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/flyfishing: Buff neck gaiters, model not stated.

Buff’s CoolNet UV page for Camo White says: “UPF 50 – Provides UV protection in accordance with standard AS/ NZ4399:2017. Certified as CE, personal protective equipment (PPE) against natural UV radiation with results achieving UPF >50 ( 98% UV protection). Protection may be weakened.” Buff does not say what weakens it. The same page lists “Cooling and Natural Odor Control” and “Made with 95% of recycled content,” and says the neckwear is “made from recycled plastic bottles, delivering UPF 50 sun protection and evaporative cooling properites.” Buff’s fishing page states: “This lightweight, breathable fabric provides UPF 50 protection while helping keep you cool and comfortable.” Buff’s fishing page lists CoolNet UV Neckwear in Camo White among its fishing neckwear.

We link Camo White. Amazon’s record gives the fabric as “95% Polyester, 5% Elastane,” one size, and an item weight of 2.4 ounces; Buff’s page does not give a weight. BUFF USA sold it with Amazon fulfilment when we checked on 25 October 2026.

The owner evidence is old and names Buff, not this model. In the October 2015 r/flyfishing thread above, a poster writes: “I never bought in to the buff thing until I randomly bought one at a fly shop on the North Platte in WY.” Another says: “I’ve been a fan of the Buff for many years.” Neither names CoolNet UV.

Against the SunGaiter (pick 1), the Buff is a tube without the SunGaiter’s tall cut, but it names its UPF test standard and the SunGaiter’s listings do not.

Specs (linked: Camo White)

  • UPF: 50, “in accordance with standard AS/ NZ4399:2017” (Buff); “UPF >50 ( 98% UV protection)” (Buff)
  • Fabric: 95% polyester, 5% elastane (Amazon listing); 95% recycled content (Buff)
  • Cooling: evaporative cooling and odor control (Buff)
  • Fit: one size
  • Weight: 2.4 oz (Amazon listing); not published by Buff

Pros

  • UPF 50 claim with a named test standard, per Buff
  • 95% recycled content, per Buff
  • One size that Buff pitches for fishing among other uses

Cons

  • Buff says “Protection may be weakened” without saying how
  • Buff gives no weight; 2.4 oz is Amazon’s figure
  • Owner reports are from 2015 and name Buff, not CoolNet UV

Simms Bugstopper SunGaiter

Cinder · 92% polyester

Anglers who fish buggy rivers and want the insect treatment built into the gaiter.

$44.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 10:00 UTC

Verdict

The SunGaiter with Insect Shield treatment, for anglers on buggy water.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Simms.

Simms says the Bugstopper SunGaiter “Shields your face from sun and insects during long, bug-heavy river days.” Its page lists “UPF 50+” and “Repels Ticks, Mosquitoes, Chiggers, No-See-Ums,” with “Lightweight, quick-drying, & breathable stretch fabric,” “Long-lasting protection from insects” and “Laser-cut breathing holes.” It gives “SolarFlex® stretch fabric; 92% polyester/8% spandex” and “WEIGHT: 1.6 oz. (45.4 g).” On the cut: “A longer cape improves skin coverage at the neckline and a taller fit allows it to fit up and over a cap.” Simms’ Bugstopper blog post says: “The active ingredient — permethrin — is bonded at the yarn level before the garment is ever made.” These are Simms’ claims; we found no test of them.

We link Cinder; Simms’ page shows Dolomite. Amazon’s record for Cinder says “Insect Shield Protection, UPF 50+ Sun Protection,” and Amazon.com held the buy box when we checked on 25 October 2026. Simms names no UPF test standard.

We found no independent test or owner report naming this gaiter, so the Evidence line rests on Simms’ specs.

Against the SunGaiter (pick 1), the Bugstopper is the same maker’s gaiter with Insect Shield treatment. Both list laser-cut breathing holes, a longer cape and a fit over a cap, and both are given as 1.6 oz (by Simms for the Bugstopper, by Tackle Warehouse for the SunGaiter colour we link). Simms gives the Bugstopper’s fabric blend, 92% polyester / 8% spandex; no blend is published for the SunGaiter colour we link.

Specs (linked: Cinder)

  • UPF: 50+ (maker; standard not stated)
  • Fabric: SolarFlex stretch, 92% polyester / 8% spandex (Simms)
  • Insect treatment: Insect Shield; “Repels Ticks, Mosquitoes, Chiggers, No-See-Ums” (Simms)
  • Fit: taller fit over a cap, longer cape (Simms)
  • Weight: 1.6 oz (45.4 g) (Simms)

Pros

  • Insect Shield treatment, which Simms says is “long-lasting”
  • UPF 50+ SolarFlex fabric with laser-cut breathing holes, per Simms
  • Published fabric blend and weight

Cons

  • Premium tier among the five sun masks here
  • The insect and UPF claims are Simms’ own; we found no test of either
  • Simms’ page shows a different colour from the one we link

Who should buy it

Anglers who fish buggy rivers and want the insect treatment built into the gaiter.

KastKing Ultimate Angler Neck Gaiter, Jaws, Hydrocool, UPF 50+

Hydrocool, UPF 50+

Verdict

An entry-tier gaiter from a fishing brand, for anglers who want a spare or a first one.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. KastKing’s own product page (buyer review): Ultimate Angler gaiter, colour not stated.

KastKing’s Ultimate Angler page says the gaiter is “Versatile and multifunctional, this gaiter adapts to your needs—wear it as a face mask, balaclava, bandana, or hood to suit any outdoor activity.” It adds: “Designed for active lifestyles, it features Hydrocool technology for an instant cooling effect, while the moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabric keeps you fresh and dry throughout the day.” The page rates it UPF 50+ without naming a standard, and gives the colour size as 19 by 9.5 inches. It publishes no fabric.

We link Jaws. The Amazon listing for Jaws says “Breathable poly-spandex material,” while the listings for other colours (Finesse Collection, for one) say “breathable nylon-spandex fabric.” KastKing’s own page names neither, so we cannot say which is right. KastKing USA sold it with Amazon fulfilment when we checked on 25 October 2026. Some other colours showed no Add to Cart button on the same day, so this is the one we link.

A buyer review on KastKing’s own page (July 2026, colour not stated) says: “One size fits most but it’s real tight at the base of my neck.” It is a review on the maker’s site, so we grade it as an owner report, not an independent test.

Against the Bassdash (pick 5), the other entry-tier tube, the KastKing names a cooling technology (Hydrocool) and gives a 19 x 9.5 in size; the Bassdash claims “a cooling feeling” without naming a technology, lists laser-cut breathing holes, and links a size chart that we did not read.

Specs (linked: Jaws)

  • UPF: 50+ (maker; standard not stated)
  • Fabric: poly-spandex (Jaws listing); nylon-spandex (other colours’ listings); not published by KastKing
  • Cooling: Hydrocool, “instant cooling effect” (KastKing)
  • Size: 19 x 9.5 in (KastKing’s page, colour label)
  • Weight: not published

Pros

  • Hydrocool cooling claim and quick-dry fabric, per KastKing
  • Sized and rated UPF 50+ on the maker’s page
  • Entry tier from a fishing brand

Cons

  • KastKing names no UPF standard and no fabric on its own page
  • The Amazon listings for two colours disagree on the fabric
  • One buyer on KastKing’s page says it is tight at the base of the neck

Who should buy it

Anglers who want a low-cost second gaiter for hot days.

Verdict

An entry-tier tube with laser-cut vent holes, for anglers who want one without paying for a premium brand.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Bassdash’s product page.

Bassdash’s own page for a gaiter of this name, UPF 50+ Neck Gaiter with Breathable Holes, lists Ocean among its colours. It shows SKU BG4026-1, while Amazon’s record for our link shows model BG4016, so we cannot match the two pages exactly; the page’s description lines below also appear in the Amazon listing’s bullets. The description opens: “Constructed of super soft Poly-Spandex with UPF 50+ sun protection rating to protect you from harmful UV rays; Skin-friendly, lightweight and breathable.” It goes on: “Technical fabrics that feature highly moisture wicking and quick dry ability provide a cooling feeling, and protect your face and neck from sun, wind, dust, and bugs.” On the holes: “Laminated laser cut breathing holes ensure you breathe easily, which solves the problem that many people feel suffocating with a mask, and avoids fogging up your glasses.” And on the cut: “Graduated shape cut allows the neck gaiter to drape and fully cover the neck; Flatlock stitching keeps you feel comfortable even when wearing the mask all day.” The Amazon title adds “4-Way Stretch.” The page links a size chart, which we did not read. No UPF standard, blend percentage or weight is given.

We link Ocean. The seller was Bassdash-US, shipping from Amazon, when we checked on 25 October 2026. We found no independent test or owner report for this gaiter, so the Evidence line rests on Bassdash’s page.

Against the KastKing (pick 4), the Bassdash lists laser-cut breathing holes and a graduated cut that drapes over the neck; the KastKing names a cooling technology and gives a measured size.

Specs (linked: Ocean)

  • UPF: 50+ (Bassdash; standard not stated)
  • Fabric: poly-spandex (Bassdash’s page; blend not given)
  • Vent holes: laser-cut breathing holes (Bassdash)
  • Size: “Stretches to fit most adults” (Bassdash); size chart linked on its page, not read
  • Weight: not published

Pros

  • Laser-cut breathing holes, which Bassdash says avoid “fogging up your glasses”
  • 4-way stretch tube with flatlock stitching, per Bassdash
  • Entry tier

Cons

  • No UPF standard, blend percentage or weight is published
  • We found no test or owner report for this gaiter
  • Bassdash’s page shows a different SKU (BG4026-1) from the Amazon model (BG4016)

Who should buy it

Choosing a Fly Fishing Sun Mask

UPF and its standard. In the pages we read, only Buff names a test standard, AS/NZ 4399:2017; the Simms, KastKing and Bassdash pages give a number alone. Read “UPF 50” and “UPF 50+” as each maker’s own wording.

Picks: Buff CoolNet UV, Simms SunGaiter.

Bugs. Of the pages we read, only the Simms Bugstopper’s lists an insect treatment. Bassdash says its fabric protects from “bugs” without naming any treatment.

Picks: Simms Bugstopper SunGaiter.

Fit with a hat. The SunGaiter’s Amazon listing gives it “extra height in back to fit under or over a hat,” and Simms says the Bugstopper fits “up and over a cap.”

Picks: Simms SunGaiter, Simms Bugstopper SunGaiter.

Fit and neck. One KastKing buyer finds it tight at the base of the neck. Colours and sizes vary by maker, so check each listing.

Picks: KastKing Ultimate Angler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why do fly fishermen wear neck gaiters?

In the r/flyfishing thread above, posters give bugs, sun and avoiding sunscreen as reasons. One says: “Sometimes the “hatch” is a bloodsucking biting swarm of bugs a million strong.”

Q. Can you wear a sun mask under or over a hat?

The Amazon listing for the Simms SunGaiter says it has “extra height in back to fit under or over a hat,” and Simms says the Bugstopper’s “taller fit allows it to fit up and over a cap.”

Q. Will a gaiter fog my sunglasses?

These are maker claims, and we found no test of either. Bassdash says its laser-cut breathing holes avoid “fogging up your glasses,” and the Amazon listing for the Simms SunGaiter says its laser-cut breathing holes are “reducing heat buildup and fogging.”

Q. How do I wash a gaiter?

Check the label. Buff’s Amazon listing says: “Machine washable as delicate, lay flat or hang to dry.”

The bottom line

Final Verdict

For anglers who want a tall gaiter with laser-cut breathing holes from a fly-fishing brand, the Simms SunGaiter (check price) colour we link is UPF 50+ with laser-cut breathing holes per its Amazon listing, and appears to be the version before Simms’ 2026 update. For a plain tube whose UPF claim names its standard, the Buff CoolNet UV (check price) gives AS/NZ 4399:2017 and a note that “Protection may be weakened.” On buggy rivers, the Simms Bugstopper SunGaiter (check price) adds Insect Shield treatment on Simms’ say-so. At the entry tier, the KastKing Ultimate Angler (check price) and Bassdash Breathable Gaiter (check price) both claim UPF 50+ without a named standard. Whichever you choose, read the maker’s page for the colour you buy.
