The short answer
The Riversmith River Quiver 2-Banger is the two-rod roof carrier for rigged rods, the Cling Mag Grab Rod Rack is the magnetic holder that docks a rod to your waders, pack or vest, and the Scotty 265 is the post-mounted holder for a kayak or boat.
Our verdict
Top Picks at a Glance
A fly fishing rod holder keeps a fly rod where you want it: locked on the roof for the drive, clipped to you while you change a fly, mounted on a kayak, or racked on a wall at home. This guide compares eight holders sold on Amazon, one to three for each of those jobs, and every figure is the maker’s own for the exact size or mount we link. If your rod is not yet rigged, our guide to setting up a fly rod and reel comes first, and fly fishing for beginners covers the rest of the basics.

How We Picked These Holders
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.
What we weighed
- A holder made or sold for fly rods. We kept holders whose maker or listing names fly rods, or fly rod tubes in the Pesca racks’ case.
- The exact variant. Rod count, size and mount type decide whether a holder works for you, so each link opens one size and mount, and the review names it.
- Specs as the maker states them. Where a maker is silent we write “not published” rather than estimate.
- Evidence we could read. Each review says what the source covered and whether it tested another version.
- A spread of jobs. Vehicle, on-body, boat and home storage.
Sources and how we graded them and who sells these holders
Sources and how we graded them
Three picks have a published review of the same line or an earlier version. A River Quiver review on My Outdoor Basecamp by Max DesMarais, updated after 2.5 years of use, covers the two- and four-rod carriers without naming the mount. Man Makes Fire’s 2019 review by Chris Maxcer covers an earlier O’Pros belt holder, on a review unit supplied by O’Pros. David Hyde’s kayak rod-holder post on Blog Fly Fish covers the Scotty 260, a holder sold without a mount, not the 265 set we link. The other five picks rest on maker figures alone, and we found no independent test of them.
Who sells these holders
Riversmith, Cling and Pesca sell their own holders on Amazon. SeaSucker’s holder is sold by J&B Tackle Co. Inc., the Rod Roost by Drift Products, the O’Pros holder by Hoot Products, and the Scotty by Amazon.com. Customer reviews quoted from a maker’s own page are labelled as maker-hosted.
Detailed Reviews
Riversmith River Quiver 2-Banger, Two-rod roof carrier
Riversmith River Quiver 2-Banger
Silver, LP T-track mount · LP T-track
Anglers who drive between spots with rigged rods and have T-track or a compatible rack to mount on.
$659.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:37 UTCVerdict
A locking two-rod carrier that mounts on a low-profile T-track, for anglers who drive between spots with rigged rods.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. My Outdoor Basecamp (Max DesMarais, updated after 2.5 years of use): River Quiver (2 or 4 rods, mount not stated).
Riversmith’s Amazon listing, sold by Riversmith, says the carrier “holds 2 fully rigged rods up to 10’4″ and 12 weight reels” and “accommodates spey and switch rods.” The linked variant is the Silver 2-Banger with the low-profile T-track mount, which the listing says “mounts directly to any T-track system” and “installs in just 7 minutes.” Riversmith’s own site has a fit checker (“Will it fit your rack?”) and sells the carrier in other mounts as separate options.
On security, Riversmith says: “High-security joint and sturdy locking mechanism makes it almost impossible to break or enter the reel box. Made with AES polymer, this design resists all attempts at destruction.” A poster in an r/flyfishing roof-rack thread, who said “I don’t know about either of those brands,” relayed a guide’s view that “anything with a plastic back is a target for theft and you should only use a full metal system to prevent theft”; Riversmith’s reel box is AES polymer. Riversmith’s warranty page says its limited lifetime warranty applies “for the lifetime of the product while it remains in the possession of the original purchaser,” requires purchase from Riversmith.com or an authorized dealer, and does not cover “loss, theft, normal wear and tear.”
The My Outdoor Basecamp review covers the River Quiver in 2- and 4-rod sizes without saying which mount it used, so it describes the line, not this exact variant. It says “With the versatility to have 2 or 4 rods, longer 10 foot rods (longer with extended version), 11 weight reels, and a simple locking mechanism, there is a lot to love about this product.” Its reel limit is 11 weight where Riversmith’s listing says 12. The tester lists “Reduced gas mileage” as a downside and writes “we lost about 1 mpg” on a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek that also carried a Thule rack, and says assembly and mounting took “between 35-45 minutes.”
Specs (linked: 2-Banger, Silver, LP T-track mount)
- Rods held: 2
- Rod length and reel limit: rods up to 10’4″ and 12 weight reels (Riversmith’s Amazon listing)
- Mount: low-profile T-track
- Materials: aluminum tubes and AES polymer box (My Outdoor Basecamp review; listing says “hard AES polymer shell”)
- Dimensions: 138 x 7 x 2.5 inches (Amazon listing)
- Warranty: limited lifetime, original purchaser, defects in workmanship (Riversmith warranty page; conditions listed there)
Pros
- Locking reel box that carries two rigged rods outside the cabin, per Riversmith
- Fit checker on Riversmith’s site for racks and crossbars
- The listing says it “accommodates spey and switch rods”; its rigged-rod limit is 10’4″
Cons
- Premium price for a two-rod carrier
- The reviewer’s roughly 1 mpg loss on one vehicle
- The review does not say which mount it tested

SeaSucker Fly Rod Holder MF5017, One-rod vacuum mount
Anglers who want to carry one rod on a car or boat surface without drilling.
$99.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:37 UTCVerdict
A single-rod holder SeaSucker says was designed for fly rods and sells for transport only.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: SeaSucker maker page (no independent test found).
SeaSucker’s page says: “Finally, a fly-rod holder you can take anywhere and mount on demand. Designed specifically for fly rods, it eliminates the fit issues of conventional rod holders. For transport only—this is not a trolling holder.” Its size and specs tab lists “Approx. 10″ tall, 4.5″ wide, extends 4.25″ from the surface when mounted. 1.25″ inside diameter rod holder.” The same list says “‘DelStang’ fly rod holder is manufactured by Blue Water Designs.” Amazon’s listing describes “vacuum mount technology” that attaches to cars and boats “without the worry of scratching surfaces or drilling holes.”
SeaSucker’s FAQ states “Rod Holders should only be used for rod storage.” Its page shows 4.9 out of 5 from 27 reviews, hosted by SeaSucker. The linked listing is sold by J&B Tackle Co. Inc., not by SeaSucker or Amazon. We found no independent test of this holder.

Cling Mag Grab Rod Rack, Magnetic wader holder
Waders who want one hand free to net or release a fish and carry the rod on their chest rig.
$34.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:37 UTCVerdict
A two-part magnetic holder that docks a rod to your waders, pack or vest while you change flies or release a fish.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Cling maker page (no independent test found).
Cling says: “The Rod Rack holds your fly rod hands-free while you change flies, release a fish, or grab a snack. Bring the two pieces close and click, your rod is secure.” It describes a “Two-part magnetic system: the mount straps to your rod butt, and the docking station loops onto your waders, pack, or vest with its lanyard,” and a “Magnetic threading groove” that “holds even small flies steady.” Cling’s FAQ says extra rod mounts can be bought in a 3-pack so that “they all dock to the same station.” The linked set is the Black rod rack; Amazon lists it with an aluminum, magnet and stainless steel build. Cling says it is made in Bozeman, Montana.
Cling’s own page shows customer reviews, hosted by Cling. One buyer wrote: “First attempt to attach rod ring to rod holder snapped. Followed directions exactly as shown in tutorial. Second attempt with second ring was successful.” Another wrote “I really wish they offered a extra rod magnet, I carry two fishing rods.” We found no independent test and no warranty terms on the Cling pages we could read.

- Docking station: loops onto waders, pack or vest with a lanyard
- Rods held: one per rod mount; extra mounts sold separately

- No independent test found

TalwegCo Rod Roost, Wearable magnet holder
Anglers who fish 2-6 weight rods and want a small magnet clip to hold the rod during fly changes.
$24.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:37 UTCVerdict
A magnet-and-band holder Talweg says fits best on 2-6 weight rods, for hands-free fly changes while wading, on a boat or on the bank.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: TalwegCo maker page (no independent test found).
Talweg’s page lists two specs: “Magnet rated to five pounds” and “Fits best on 2-6 weight rods (see the XL version for heavier rods).” Amazon’s listing calls it “Ideal for Wading, Boat & Bank Fishing” and lists aluminum and stainless steel; Talweg’s own page lists “Light and strong ABS plastic construction” and an “Aluminum carabiner.” The linked set is the standard Rod Roost in Blue, not the XL, and it is sold by Drift Products.
Talweg’s page carries customer reviews hosted by Talweg. One reads: “Magnet is a little light. Rod drops off often. Should have went with the larger one for my 6 wt setup.” Talweg replied: “The six weight kind of sits right in that middle ground between magnets depending on the rod and reel.” Another buyer wrote “the little carabiner has a poor closure that can pop open when on the water.” Talweg replied: “The carabiners are spring loaded, sounds like you may have got a dud.” We found no independent test.
Specs (linked: standard Rod Roost, Blue)
- Mount: magnet and adjustable band
- Magnet: rated to five pounds (Talweg)
- Rods: fits best on 2-6 weight rods; XL version for heavier rods (Talweg)
- Material: ABS plastic construction with an aluminum carabiner (Talweg); Amazon’s listing says aluminum and stainless steel

Pros
- Wearable magnet clip that Talweg says fits best on 2-6 weight rods
- Small size, 1.75 x 2.75 x 1.75 inches per the Amazon listing
- An XL version exists for heavier rods, per Talweg
Cons
- A maker-hosted reviewer found the five-pound magnet light on a 6-weight
- A reviewer reported the carabiner can pop open
- No independent test found
Who should buy it
Anglers who fish 2-6 weight rods and want a small magnet clip to hold the rod during fly changes.
O’Pros Belt Clip Rod Holder, Belt-clip rod holder
Waders who want a belt-mounted holder they can angle, for fly or spinning rods.
$24.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:37 UTCVerdict
A belt-mounted holder for fly and spinning rods that rotates through 360 degrees, with a slide lock added since the version reviewed.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, previous generation. Man Makes Fire (Chris Maxcer, 2019-11-07; review unit supplied by O’Pros): 3rd Hand Rod Holder (2019, before the slide lock).
O’Pros’ page calls it a “Belt Clip Rod Holder for Fly and Spinning Rod” that “Rotates 360 degrees for desired rod angle,” with an “Integrated elastic cord for additional rod support when mobile” and a “3 year warranty”; the page text we read gives no warranty terms. It says the current design “added slide lock to allow quick locking and unlocking the rod holder rotation” and has an “updated belt clip design for more secure fit to belt.” It fits “any 1″ to 2″ wide wading belt, pants belt, etc.” Amazon lists it as nylon and ABS and made in the USA. The linked listing is the Original Black, sold by Hoot Products and shipped by Amazon.
Man Makes Fire’s Chris Maxcer reviewed the 2019 “3rd Hand Rod Holder” on a review unit supplied by O’Pros, so he tested the version before the slide lock. He wrote: “The rod-holding clips do a surprisingly great job with cork fly fishing rod handles.” He listed five features, including the 360-degree rotation, which lets you “set the angle so your rod tip points safely up,” and said “What I can’t speak to yet is long-term durability.” His verdict was that it “beat out the Measure Net to become our number one recommendation in our guide to the best gifts for fly fishers this year.” A poster in an r/flyfishing thread on belt holders wrote “O pros third hand is exactly what you want.” The O’Pros page does not publish how many rods it holds.

Scotty 265 Fly Rod Holder, Boat and kayak holder
Kayak and boat anglers with a deck or gunnel to mount on who want a holder that also works for trolling.
$31.45 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:37 UTCVerdict
A post-mounted holder with a reel strap and a side/deck mount, made for storing or trolling a fly rod on a kayak or boat.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Blog Fly Fish (David Hyde, 2025-06-18): Scotty 260 Fly Rod Holder on a 433 coaming clamp mount.
Scotty says: “The perfect holder for rod storage or trolling with a fly rod and reel.” It “Works well with short butt fly rods and holds a fly reel securely with a soft latching strap which snaps over the top,” and it “Includes 241 Side Deck Mount and can be mounted on top or side of gunnel.” Scotty lists a “Fly Rod Holder Interior Diameter: 1.16″” and says post-mount holders are “fully adjustable up and down and with 360° of horizontal rotation.” Amazon lists fiber-reinforced engineering-grade nylon. The linked listing is sold by Amazon.com.
David Hyde’s post covers the Scotty 260, which Amazon lists as the fly rod holder with no mount, on a Scotty 433 coaming clamp. He wrote: “My top choices would be Scotty if you have a sit in kayak with cockpit coaming and YakAttack if you have a kayak with gear tracks.” He also wrote “I’ve struggled with separating the pieces once inserted into each other, especially after use in saltwater” and “while the strap on the rod holder might make you nervous, this is a quality product made in Canada and I’ve never needed to replace the strap.” That is the 260 on a clamp mount, not the 265’s deck mount.
Specs (linked: 265 with 241 side deck mount)
- Mount: 241 side deck mount, top or side of gunnel
- Rod opening: 1.16″ interior diameter

A pair of PETG brackets that holds three fly rod tubes up to 2.5 inches across under a shelf or from a ceiling joist.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Pesca maker page (no independent test found).

This rack holds the tube, not the rod itself.
Pesca’s warranty page describes a “3-YEAR LIMITED MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY” that covers “defects in materials and workmanship under normal use,” and excludes normal wear, improper installation and overloading. Choosing a Fly Fishing Rod Holder
Where does the rod need to be?
The picks split by job. For the drive, the Riversmith carries two rigged rods and the SeaSucker holds one on a vehicle or boat surface. On the water, the Cling, the Rod Roost and the O’Pros hold the rod on you while you change a fly; our guide to tying a fly on covers that step. On a boat or kayak, the Scotty is the post-mounted option, and the two Pesca racks are for storing rod tubes at home.
Transport, trolling or just holding
Read what each maker says the holder is for. SeaSucker says its holder is “For transport only,” while Scotty says its holder is for “rod storage or trolling.” The on-body holders are described as hands-free holds for fly changes and fish releases.
Rod weight and the magnet
Talweg says its standard Rod Roost fits best on 2-6 weight rods and points to an XL for heavier rods, and a buyer on its page found the standard magnet light on a 6-weight. If you fish heavier line weights, check the weight range before you order; our fly rod size guide explains line weights.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the best fly fishing rod holder?
No holder here suits every job, because the makers describe different uses: roof transport, vacuum-mount transport, hands-free wearing, boat trolling and tube storage. Pick by where the rod needs to be, then by the exact size or mount in the table above.
Q. Are rod holders worth it?
Opinions differ among anglers. One r/flyfishing poster wrote: “a rigged rod will get fished more than a broken-down rig.” Another wrote: “Remember the good old days when fly fishers would spend 5 minutes putting a rod and reel together and then put them back in the tube at the end of the day?” The My Outdoor Basecamp reviewer of the River Quiver wrote “It took about 12 hours of utilizing the rack to realize we made a mistake by not purchasing the system sooner,” and also listed reduced gas mileage as a downside.
Q. How do I store a fly rod at home?
The two Pesca racks hold the rod tube, not the rod. Pesca’s collection page says its “Wall mounts” come in “single, double, triple, and modular options” and its “Ceiling mounts” are “out of the way, gravity-locking, ideal for low-traffic storage,” and that its holders fit tubes “from 2″ to 2.5″ and larger”; the two racks linked here take tubes up to 2.5 inches (Large). Our guide to setting up a fly rod and reel covers taking the rod out of the tube.
Q. Can I fish from a rod holder?
Only where the maker says so. Scotty says its 265 allows “hands free trolling with a fly rod.” SeaSucker says “this is not a trolling holder,” and its FAQ says holders “should only be used for rod storage.”
Q. Will a roof carrier fit my vehicle?
Check the maker’s fit tool before you order. Riversmith’s site has a “Will it fit your rack?” checker, and its Amazon listing for the T-track version says it “mounts directly to any T-track system.”
The bottom line
Final Verdict
Match the holder to the job. For the drive, the Riversmith River Quiver 2-Banger (check price) is the two-rod roof carrier and the SeaSucker Fly Rod Holder (check price) is the one-rod vacuum mount. For wading, the Cling Mag Grab Rod Rack (check price) is the magnetic wader holder, the TalwegCo Rod Roost (check price) is the wearable magnet holder and the O’Pros Belt Clip Rod Holder (check price) is the belt-clip option. The Scotty 265 Fly Rod Holder (check price) is the boat and kayak holder, and the Pesca Fly Rod Tube Holder, Double Wall (check price) and the Pesca Fly Rod Tube Holder, Ceiling Under-Shelf (check price) store rod tubes on a wall or ceiling. Five of the eight rest on maker figures alone.
