Best Lines for Ice Fishing: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

Berkley Trilene Micro Ice is the mono several posters in an ice fishing forum thread spool on walleye rods, Seaguar IceX is the 100% fluorocarbon option for walleye rods and leaders, and Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid is the thin braid for shelter jigging in deeper water.

Our verdict

Our Top Picks at a Glance

Ice line has two jobs that summer line rarely faces at once: it has to stay manageable on a reel spool the size of a coin when the air is far below freezing, and it has to show a bite that barely moves a spring bobber. Most makers in this guide claim a fix for the first problem, so we quote those claims word for word rather than paraphrase them, and we list the test, diameter and spool length of the exact spool each link opens.

Price tier

Tiers are relative to the lines in this guide; live prices are in the comparison table below.

This guide covers every common ice line type: monofilament, 100% fluorocarbon, a fluorocarbon-coated copolymer, braid for jigging rods and braided nylon for tip-ups. If you already know you want braid on every rod, the two braids here are a starting point; the rest of the list is for anglers still choosing a line type. Pair the light lines with the rods in our ice fishing rod comparison, and if you fish an inline reel, see our inline ice reel guide.

How We Sorted These Ice Lines

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.

What each line had to show

  • Sold as an ice line, or, for tip-up line, sold specifically for tip-ups.
  • A maker page that lists the test and spool length of the exact spool we link, and the diameter where the maker publishes one.
  • An Amazon listing that opens that exact test, colour and spool, in stock and new at the time of writing.
  • A distinct job: no two picks of the same line type aimed at the same reader.
Where the figures come from, how independent each source is and what ice anglers in the forums run

Where the figures come from

Test, diameter and spool length are copied from each maker’s product page with the linked variant selected (Berkley, Sufix and Seaguar publish per-test diameters; P-Line, PowerPro and Mason do not). Each Amazon link was checked against Amazon’s variant data and the model number on the listing. Cold-weather claims are quoted from the maker; where an Amazon listing says something stronger than the maker’s page, we use the maker’s wording.

How independent each source is

Two picks have editorial coverage: Bassmaster’s gear write-up of P-Line Floroice and BC Fishing Journal’s ice line roundup, which covers PowerPro Ice-Tec. Neither names the test size it looked at. Three picks rest on owner reports from ice fishing forums, and three on the maker’s specifications alone. Each review’s Evidence line says which.

What ice anglers in the forums run

The In-Depth Outdoors thread “Favorite Panfish and Walleye Ice Lines” (January 2024) is a fair snapshot. Posters named Sufix Ice Magic in 3 lb for panfish more than any other line, Trilene Micro Ice in 6 or 8 lb for walleye, and braid with a fluorocarbon leader on deeper walleye rods. Not everyone buys the ice label: one poster wrote, “Personally I think the “ice” lines are just marketing to charge more, use regular Sufix Advanced in the winter and still works great,” and another, “I do not buy into ice specific line.” On Reddit, the top-ranking r/IceFishing thread for this search is a post about Sufix Ice Magic, where one commenter added, “99 percent of the time we fish inside so we use braid.”

Berkley Trilene Micro Ice

4 lb Clear Steel

Anglers who want one familiar mono for panfish and walleye rods and fish mostly from a shelter.

$3.86 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

Verdict

A plain, thin ice mono in five tests from 2 to 8 lb, and the line several posters on one ice fishing forum thread named for walleye rods.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: 3 lb, 6 lb and 8 lb.

Berkley describes Micro Ice as “premium ice fishing monofilament with lower stretch and higher strength-per-diameter” and calls it a “Good choice for ice shelter angling.” That is the only cold-related claim on Berkley’s own page; the Amazon listing adds that it is “remarkably durable to provide the resistance required for colder conditions,” which is the listing’s wording, not a figure. The 4 lb Clear Steel spool we link is 0.008 in thick per Berkley’s variant page and holds 110 yd.

On the In-Depth Outdoors thread, one poster wrote, “Most of my walleye setups are spooled with trilene micro ice mono in 6lb or 8 lb,” and another, “Trilene micro ice 3 lbs. for panfish and 6 for walleyes. I have always used Trilene so I thought I would give the micro ice a try. I have no complaints.” Those posters ran 3, 6 and 8 lb, not the 4 lb we link; Berkley sells the same line in all of them, so pick the test for your fish. A commenter on r/IceFishing summed it up as “Good ol trilene micro ice, steel color.”

Next to Sufix Ice Magic (#2), the trade-off is that Berkley makes no anti-ice claim for Micro Ice, while Sufix says its additives “deter water absorption that causes ice build-up.” Berkley pitches Micro Ice on low stretch and strength for its diameter, and calls it a choice for ice shelter angling.

Specs (linked: 4 lb, Clear Steel, 110 yd)

    Pros

    • Low-stretch mono in five tests from 2 to 8 lb, with a 0.008 in diameter at 4 lb
    • 110 yd spool, the longest of the mono and fluorocarbon picks here
    • Clear Steel or high-visibility Solar colour

    Cons

    • Berkley’s own page makes no anti-freeze or ice-shedding claim
    • Owner reports we found are for 3, 6 and 8 lb, not the 4 lb spool

Sufix Ice Magic, Low-Temp Panfish Mono

    Low-Temp Panfish Mono
Sufix Ice Magic Fishing Line, Low-Temperature, All-Purpose…

    Sufix Ice Magic

    3 lb Glacier Blue

Panfish anglers who hop holes in the open and want a light mono made for the cold.

$4.30 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

    Verdict

The mono Sufix built around cold handling, and the 3 lb panfish line named most often on the In-Depth Outdoors thread we read.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: 3 lb, clear and orange.

Sufix says Ice Magic is “designed to stay manageable even in frigid water,” that “Special additives deter water absorption that causes ice build-up,” and that the line has “a soft and supple feeling with low memory and high knot and tensile strength.” It also lists “Fast sinking for more natural presentation.” The 3 lb spool is 0.005 in thick per Sufix’s spec table, and the Glacier Blue 100 yd spool we link carries Sufix’s part number 603-003GB. The Amazon listing goes further than the maker (“Prevents ice build-up on the line”); we use Sufix’s own “deter”.

On the In-Depth Outdoors thread, one poster runs “3lb Sufix Ice Magic mono for my panfish rods,” and another wrote, “Suffix Ice magic 3 lb for panfish. I use this inside or outside. I like the clear but tying is a challenge as I age… they do make an orange that is easier to see.” Those posts date from early 2024 and describe clear and orange spools; Glacier Blue is a newer colour of the same line, which Sufix announces on its site. The top Reddit result for this search is a r/IceFishing post by an angler praising this line, where one reply says, “The Sufix mono will be some of the best line for cold Temps, especially hole hopping where ice build up is an issue.”

Next to Micro Ice (#1), the two lines cover the same 2 to 8 lb range (Sufix adds 1 lb); the difference is the claim, since Sufix makes an anti-ice claim and Berkley does not. On the thread we read, Ice Magic showed up mostly on panfish rods and Micro Ice on walleye rods.

Specs (linked: 3 lb, Glacier Blue, 100 yd)

      Pros

      • Mono with additives Sufix says “deter water absorption that causes ice build-up”
      • Thin 0.005 in at 3 lb for light jigs and spring bobbers
      • Tests from 1 to 8 lb in 100 or 300 yd

      Cons

      • Mono stretch, so it reads light bites less directly than braid or fluorocarbon
      • One poster found the clear spool hard to see when tying knots
      • The Amazon listing does not state the spool length; it comes from Sufix’s part number

      P-Line Floroice, Fluoro-Coated Copolymer

      Fluoro-Coated Copolymer
      P-Line Floroice Fishing Spool (100 Yard, 4-Pound)

      P-Line Floroice

      4 lb

Anglers who like how mono handles but want a coated line for clearer water.

$13.11 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

      Verdict

A copolymer line with a fluorocarbon coating, for anglers who want a mono-like feel with some of fluorocarbon’s low visibility.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Bassmaster: Floroice range, test not stated.

P-Line says Floroice “combines the strength and reliability of a premium copolymer core with an advanced silicone fluorocarbon coating” and that the coating “helps reduce water absorption, allowing the line to resist freezing and maintain consistent performance throughout the day.” Its feature list adds “Stays Limp in Extreme Cold” and “Ideal for Small Ice Reels.” It is not 100% fluorocarbon, despite the name. P-Line does not publish a diameter for any test.

Bassmaster’s gear write-up describes it this way: “P-Line’s Floroice line is a blend of two lines that utilizes a copolymer line with a silicon fluorocarbon.” The piece covers the whole range and does not say which test it looked at, so treat it as coverage of the series, not of the 4 lb spool we link. Against that, BC Fishing Journal’s roundup lists Floroice’s con as “Sometimes does have freezing challenges.”

At the time of writing the Amazon offer was sold by third-party sellers (Frank’s Great Outdoors, then Sportco Wholesale) rather than by Amazon.com, and the price had risen well above P-Line’s list; check the live price in the table before you buy.

Specs (linked: 4 lb, clear, 100 yd)

        Pros

        • Copolymer core with a silicone fluorocarbon coating that P-Line says “helps reduce water absorption”
        • 100 yd spool in six tests up to 8 lb
        • Independent coverage of the Floroice range from Bassmaster

        Cons

        • P-Line publishes no diameters, so it cannot be compared on thickness
        • BC Fishing Journal notes it “sometimes does have freezing challenges”
        • Sold by a third-party seller on Amazon at the time of writing

        Who should buy it

        Seaguar IceX, Walleye Fluorocarbon

        Walleye Fluorocarbon
Seaguar IceX 100% Fluorocarbon Fishing Line , Abrasion…

        Seaguar IceX

        6 lb

Walleye anglers who want fluorocarbon as a main line or as a leader behind braid.

$10.70 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

        Verdict

Seaguar’s 100% fluorocarbon ice line, with published diameters from 2 to 15 lb, for walleye rods and leaders.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Seaguar IceX product page.

Seaguar calls IceX a “Low memory, micro-diameter ice line that’s powered with exclusive Seaguar 100% fluorocarbon resins,” “Built for hard water performance with unparalleled abrasion resistance and exceptional knot and tensile strength even on the coldest days,” and “Virtually invisible underwater and with almost zero stretch.” The 6 lb spool we link is 0.008 in (0.205 mm) per Seaguar’s table and holds 50 yd. The Amazon listing adds that it is “designed to stand up to toothy fish and the hard jagged edges of drilled holes.” Seaguar also notes that its break strengths are “based on manufacturer’s regular testing results and is not intended to guarantee or warranty actual performance.”

We found no independent review of IceX, so this pick rests on Seaguar’s specs. Fluorocarbon leaders were common in the forum threads: posters described braid main lines tied to a fluorocarbon leader on walleye and pike rods, and IceX is sold up to 15 lb for that job.

Next to Berkley’s Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon Ice (#5), IceX covers heavier tests (to 15 lb against Berkley’s 6 lb top) but comes on a 50 yd spool rather than 75 yd.

Specs (linked: 6 lb, clear, 50 yd)

          Pros

          • 100% fluorocarbon in tests up to 15 lb, so one line can serve as main line or leader
          • Seaguar publishes inch and millimetre diameters for every test
          • Sold and shipped by Amazon.com at the time of writing

          Cons

          • 50 yd spool, shorter than the mono picks
          • No independent review found; maker specs only

          Who should buy it

Walleye anglers who want fluorocarbon as a main line or as a leader behind braid.

          • Spool: 50 yd

          Light Fluorocarbon
          Berkley Trilene® 100% Fluorocarbon Ice, Clear, 3-Pound…

          Berkley Trilene Fluoro Ice

          3 lb Clear

Panfish anglers in clear water who want fluorocarbon in 2 to 4 lb on a spring bobber rod.

$7.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

          Verdict

A light-test fluorocarbon, 2 to 6 lb, that Berkley says it made thinner and more supple for the cold.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Berkley product page.

Berkley describes it as “A specially designed 100% fluorocarbon formula for ice fishing. Thinner diameter and more supple to stay flexible in cold weather conditions.” Its feature list adds “Low stretch formula for greater sensitivity and solid hooksets” and “Thinner diameter for better lure control.” Berkley also claims a “Similar refractive index as water so fish can’t see it”; that is the maker’s claim, and how visible any line is depends on the water. The 3 lb spool we link is 0.007 in per Berkley’s variant page (the Amazon listing gives the same 0.007 in) and holds 75 yd.

We found no independent review of the ice version; reviews of Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon cover the open-water line. This pick rests on Berkley’s specs.

The trade-off against Seaguar IceX (#4) is the opposite one: Berkley’s spool is longer (75 yd against 50 yd), but its range stops at 6 lb, so it is a panfish and light walleye line rather than a leader line for pike.

Specs (linked: 3 lb, Clear, 75 yd)

            Pros

            • Fluorocarbon in light panfish tests, with Berkley’s cold-flexibility claim
            • 75 yd spool, longer than the other fluorocarbon pick
            • Sold and shipped by Amazon.com at the time of writing

            Cons

            • Tops out at 6 lb
            • No independent review of the ice version found

            Who should buy it

Walleye anglers who jig from a shelter in deeper water and want braid with a leader.

$17.25 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

            Verdict

An 8-fiber braid sold in tests from 4 to 30 lb, with a 6 lb spool Sufix lists at 0.006 in, for shelter jigging and walleye rods.

Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. In-Depth Outdoors forum: 6 lb and 8 lb, colour not stated.

Sufix calls it “The strongest, most durable small diameter ice braid,” which is the maker’s own claim, and explains the construction: “8 fibers (7 HMPE Fibers plus 1 GORE® Performance Fiber) and 32 weaves (pics) per inch.” For cold weather, Sufix says the HMPE fibers give “hydrophobic water-repellent protection that resists freezing.” The 6 lb Ice Camo spool we link is 0.006 in per Sufix’s table and holds 50 yd.

On the In-Depth Outdoors thread, one poster wrote, “Walleye rods I go with either 6lb or 8lb Sufix 832 ice braid with a barrel swivel to 8lb Ice Majic mono.” Braid on the ice comes with a split in opinion: another poster prefers braid for walleye only when fishing inside, and on Reddit one commenter wrote, “99 percent of the time we fish inside so we use braid.”

Next to PowerPro Ice-Tec (#7), 832 has published diameters and a lighter 4 lb option, while Ice-Tec’s case is its coating. At the time of writing Amazon.com’s own offer on this spool was above Sufix’s list price, so check the live price in the table.

Specs (linked: 6 lb, Ice Camo, 50 yd)

              Pros

              • Published diameter of 0.006 in at 6 lb, with tests from 4 to 30 lb
              • Owner report of 6 lb on walleye rods with a mono or fluorocarbon leader
              • Sold and shipped by Amazon.com at the time of writing

              Cons

              • Premium tier for a 50 yd spool, and the Amazon offer sat above Sufix’s list price when we checked
              • Braid usually needs a leader; forum posters mostly run it inside shelters

$11.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 03:55 UTC

              Verdict

A Spectra braid with a water-repelling coating, in 10 lb here, for walleye and pike rods where an angler wants braid that is meant to shed water.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. BC Fishing Journal: Ice-Tec, test not stated.

PowerPro (Shimano) says Ice-Tec “is engineered to resist water absorption and ice build-up, maintaining smooth handling, sensitivity, and strength in extreme cold,” and that it “maintains limpness, handling, and bite detection in sub-zero conditions.” Shimano’s product page lists “Spectra Fiber” and a “Specialized Water Repelling Coating,” but no diameter.

BC Fishing Journal’s roundup wrote: “Braided lines always have the challenge of holding water more than mono and fluoro but Ice-Tec’s coating is one of the better braids for reducing ice build up.” BC Fishing Journal names the coating as Teflon (“They’ve added a coating of Teflon to shed water and reduce freezing”), and the Amazon listing’s bullets say “PTFE Coating sheds water and minimmizes ice build up” (PTFE is Teflon); Shimano’s own page uses the generic “Specialized Water Repelling Coating.” The roundup also notes that “the icy-blue color line makes this a high visibility line,” It does not say which test it looked at.

At the time of writing the Amazon offer was sold by Reveal Outdoors rather than Amazon.com. Shimano’s own store showed the 5 and 8 lb spools as sold out when we checked, which is why we link 10 lb.

                Verdict

Heavy braided nylon on a 50 yd spool for tip-ups, where line is set, not cast.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Mason Tackle product page.

Mason describes its tip-up line as “high quality, waterproofed to prevent mildew, and heat stretched for additional strength.” It makes no cold-weather claim. The 30 lb Black spool we link is Mason item 50TB-30, 50 yd; Mason sells the same line from 15 to 80 lb and on spools up to 1,000 yd, but publishes no diameter.

We found no independent review of Mason’s line, so this pick rests on Mason’s specs. On r/IceFishing’s tip-up line thread, posters described the same approach: “Black Dacron line, 30 lb test and usually some sort of a floro leader depending on what I’m targeting.” The same thread carries a caution about coated tip-up lines: one poster who “Recently tried the freeze proof polymer coated stuff from Sufix” found that “In the cold it has crazy memory and basically comes off the spool as a big coil spring.” That poster did not name the product; Mason itself describes its line only as “waterproofed to prevent mildew.” For the tip-ups themselves, see our ice fishing tip-up comparison.

Mason lists the 50 yd 30 lb spool at $6.42 on its own site; at the time of writing the Amazon offer, sold by Fair Services and shipped by Amazon, was well above that. Check the live price in the table before you buy.

                  • Black colour

                  Cons

                  • The Amazon offer was well above Mason’s own list price at the time of writing

Choosing the Best Fishing Line for Ice Fishing

                  Mono, fluorocarbon or braid

The forum threads we read split by setting, not by fish. Mono such as Ice Magic or Micro Ice was the common answer for panfish and for anglers fishing outside, where wet line can freeze in the guides; one Reddit reply singled out Sufix mono for “hole hopping where ice build up is an issue.” Braid was the common answer inside heated shelters, usually tied to a fluorocarbon or mono leader. Fluorocarbon showed up as leader material and as a main line for clear water. BC Fishing Journal puts the trade-off this way: “Braided lines always have the challenge of holding water more than mono and fluoro.”

Related guide: Best Line for Saltwater Fishing, Compared: Braid, Mono and Leader

Picks: mono Berkley Trilene Micro Ice, Sufix Ice Magic; coated copolymer P-Line Floroice; fluorocarbon Seaguar IceX, Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon Ice; braid Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid, PowerPro Ice-Tec.

                  Pound test by species

The tests forum posters named line up well: 2 to 4 lb for panfish, 6 to 8 lb mono or fluorocarbon for walleye, and 6 to 10 lb braid to a leader on walleye rods in deeper water. Each pick here comes in several tests, so the spool we link is a starting point, not the only option. If you also fish open water for trout, our trout fishing line guide covers the summer versions of several of these brands.

Picks: panfish Sufix Ice Magic 3 lb, Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon Ice 3 lb; walleye Seaguar IceX 6 lb, Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid 6 lb.

                  Diameter and spool length

The spools in this guide run 50 to 110 yd. Makers sell thin diameters as an advantage on the ice: Berkley lists “Thinner diameter for better lure control” for its ice fluorocarbon, and P-Line calls Floroice’s low memory “an excellent choice for the small-diameter spools commonly found on ice fishing reels.” Sufix lists 0.005 in for 3 lb Ice Magic and 0.006 in for 6 lb 832 Advanced Ice Braid; P-Line, PowerPro and Mason publish no diameters, so not every pick can be compared on thickness. For how reel size relates to line capacity on open-water spinning reels, see our spinning reel size guide.

Inside a shelter or out in the wind

Sufix ties ice build-up to water absorption, and forum posters describe it as an outdoor problem more than a shelter one. Every maker here except Berkley (for Micro Ice) and Mason makes a specific anti-ice or cold-handling claim, quoted in each review; none publishes a test of it. One forum poster’s rule was simple: “Do you fish outside a lot? If not, braid is my preference for walleye.”

                  Tip-up line and leaders

Tip-up line is heavier braid that sits on the tip-up spool. On the Reddit tip-up thread posters ran 20 to 45 lb, mostly black Dacron or braided tip-up line, with fluorocarbon or wire leaders for pike. If you are choosing between coated and uncoated tip-up line, note the poster quoted in the Mason review who found one coated line coiled badly in the cold.

Picks: Mason Tip-Up Braided Nylon; for leaders, Seaguar IceX.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

                  Q. What’s the best line to use for ice fishing?

It depends on where and what you fish. Among the lines we compared, forum posters most often named a cold-weather mono such as Sufix Ice Magic in 3 lb for panfish and Berkley Trilene Micro Ice in 6 or 8 lb for walleye, and braid with a fluorocarbon leader inside shelters. Pick the line type for your setting first, then the test for your fish.

                  Q. What is better for ice fishing, monofilament or fluorocarbon?

Neither across the board. On the forum thread we read, mono like Ice Magic and Micro Ice was the common choice for panfish and outdoor fishing, and Sufix makes a specific anti-ice claim for Ice Magic. Fluorocarbon such as Seaguar IceX or Berkley’s Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon Ice is sold for low stretch and low visibility, and Berkley says its ice fluorocarbon is “more supple to stay flexible in cold weather conditions.” Many forum anglers use fluorocarbon as the leader rather than the main line.

                  Q. Is braided line better for ice fishing?

For jigging inside a heated shelter, many forum anglers think so, because braid’s low stretch shows bites; outside, posters were more likely to switch to mono. Makers of ice braid add water-repelling treatments for that reason: Sufix says 832 Advanced Ice Braid has “hydrophobic water-repellent protection that resists freezing,” and PowerPro says Ice-Tec is “engineered to resist water absorption and ice build-up.” Forum posters tie braid to a fluorocarbon or mono leader, and BC Fishing Journal calls Ice-Tec’s blue “a high visibility line.”

                  Q. What’s stronger, 20 lb braid or 20 lb mono?

The pound-test number is the maker’s rated break strength, so both are labelled to break at about 20 lb; Seaguar notes its own ratings are “based on manufacturer’s regular testing results.” The difference is thickness and stretch: braid is much thinner for the same test. Sufix, for example, lists 20 lb 832 Advanced Ice Braid at 0.009 in, while its 8 lb Ice Magic mono is already 0.01 in.

                  Q. Do you need special line for ice fishing?

Not always. Some posters on the In-Depth Outdoors thread use their summer line and one called ice lines “just marketing to charge more,” while most posters in the same thread named an ice-specific line. The makers’ case for ice lines is the cold-weather treatment each one quotes in its review above.

                  Q. What line should I use on tip-ups?

Heavy braided tip-up line with a leader; posters on the Reddit tip-up thread ran 20 to 45 lb. Mason’s braided nylon in 30 lb is the tip-up line in this guide; Reddit posters also use black Dacron.

                  The bottom line

                  Final Verdict

For one line on most ice rods, Berkley Trilene Micro Ice (check price) is the mono several forum posters already use for walleye. For panfish outside in the cold, Sufix Ice Magic (check price) is the mono Sufix makes with additives against ice build-up. P-Line Floroice (check price) sits between mono and fluorocarbon with its coated copolymer. For fluorocarbon, Seaguar IceX (check price) covers walleye and leader tests up to 15 lb, while Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon Ice (check price) stays in light panfish tests on a longer spool. In a shelter over deeper water, Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid (check price) gives a thin braid with published diameters, and PowerPro Ice-Tec (check price) is the coated alternative. For tip-ups, Mason Tip-Up Braided Nylon (check price) is plain 30 lb braided nylon; check its live price first.
