The short answer
For a shelf-stable strip that Fishbites says is best used in water below 65F, start with the Fishbites E-Z Shrimp Fast-Acting; for soft baits sold in a shrimp assortment that Berkley says can be rigged with any technique appropriate for live shrimp, the Berkley Gulp! Alive! Shrimp Assortment; and for a sand-flea scent, the Fishbites E-Z Flea.
Our verdict
Top Picks for Ocean Fishing Bait
Search for ocean fishing bait and two kinds of page come back. One kind lists natural bait by species: the Alabama state agency’s saltwater tips table names cut bait, squid, dead or live shrimp, crabs and mole crabs (“sand fleas”). The other sells shelf-stable scented products, such as bait strips that go on the hook cut-to-size, and Salt Strong’s lure guide adds that “adding a scent to your lure might be the difference between a fish being spooked off or interested enough to strike”. So this guide covers both ends of the question that can sit in a tackle bag: scented bait strips and scent-infused soft baits. Live and frozen bait is discussed through the agency’s wording, but it is not one of the eight picks.

The eight picks come from four brands, and every one is the exact size, count or colour the Amazon link opens. Species are named only where the maker, a named source or the listing itself names them, and the review says which. Nothing here is a promise of a bite: sources disagree, and a few owner posts below say a bait did not work for them. For the rest of the kit, see our guides to types of fishing lures, beginner rod-and-reel combos and spinning reel sizes.

How the Bait Picks Were Checked for Ocean Use
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves. Prices change, so the live price and seller sit in the comparison table and review boxes, not in the text.
What a pick had to meet
- A maker page, or the Amazon listing where the maker is silent, describes the linked form, size or count.
- The Amazon link opens that exact colour, size or pack, in stock and new, at the time of writing.
- The product is a shelf-stable scented bait strip or soft bait. Live, frozen and homemade bait are covered in prose only.
- Species are written only as the maker, a named source or the listing states them, and the review says which.
Sources and independence, what the owner posts say and licences, size limits and bag limits
Sources and independence
Fishbites, FishGum, Berkley and Z-Man make the products reviewed, so their pages are labelled “No independent test; maker specs” or, where owner posts exist, “No independent test; owner reports”. We found no independent lab or magazine test of these exact variants. The natural-bait wording comes from Outdoor Alabama, the saltwater tips page of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which is a state agency and sells nothing here. Salt Strong publishes the lure guide the search results show, but it sells lures and scent to members, so we treat it as a seller’s view, not an independent test. The sellers named in each review hold the Amazon buy box at the time of writing and can change.
What the owner posts say
The r/Fishing thread for a beginner asking what bait to use in sea water is short. One poster writes, “Raw squid or shrimp would be my first pick.” Another replies, “Cut bait rarely fails in salt water.” A third suggests, “Shiny metal lure for your top water fish.” In r/SurfFishing, a poster comparing bait strips says, “I use both. Fish Bites last longer, Fish Gum attracts more bites.” and another says, “Fish bites. Fishgum get moldy as all hell.” with a reply, “No one else has this issue.” These are individual posters, and none names an exact variant we link except where a review says so.
Licences, size limits and bag limits
Rules for saltwater licences, size limits and bag limits come from your state agency, differ by state and change. This guide quotes none of them and is not legal advice. Alabama’s Marine Resources Division, whose bait table is cited below, lists its own under “Saltwater Recreational Licenses” and “Seasons and Bag Limits” on its saltwater pages; for any other coast, start from that state’s agency.

Fishbites E-Z Shrimp Fast-Acting, Fast-Acting Bait Strip
Fishbites E-Z Shrimp Fast-Acting
Anglers fishing water below the maker's 65F note who want a shelf-stable strip they can also use as a jig trailer.
$5.65 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTCVerdict
Fishbites describes its Fast Acting formula as a gel that releases scent quickly, with no mesh, and says it is best in water below 65F; the linked pack is the shrimp scent in orange.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/SurfFishing thread on Fish Gum vs Fish Bites: Fishbites strips, formula not stated.
Fishbites’ page says: “The Fast Acting formula is made with a special fiber-infused gel that gets the flavor/scent dispersed quickly into the water column.” On the cold-water note it says: “While the gel is designed to work in all water temperatures, it’s best to use in water temperatures below 65F.” Each strip is “1/2″ wide and about 12″ long”, sold two to a pack, and “can be used on a bare hook or as a trailer on a jig or skirt” with sharp scissors to cut it. The page names no species beyond “a wide variety of saltwater species”. The maker’s own comparison lists tear strength as 4 for Fast Acting and 11 for Longer Lasting; the page does not say how that figure is measured, so read it as the maker’s in-house scale. The Amazon listing’s size field reads 13 inches while its bullets and the maker say about 12, so we use the maker’s figure. The listing also says the strips “require no cooler” and can be stored with your gear in a cool, dry place, unlike frozen bait.
A poster on r/SurfFishing writes, “Fish bites. Good for powercast and doesn’t falls off easily.” The poster does not say which formula or scent. Sold by Fishbites on Amazon at the time of writing.
Trade-off against picks 2 and 3: those two use the Longer Lasting formula with a cloth binder and a warmer-water note; this one is the Fast Acting formula with the colder-water note.
Specs: Fishbites E-Z Shrimp Fast-Acting, Orange
Pros
- Cut-to-size strip that Fishbites says works on a bare hook or as a trailer on a jig or skirt
- Fast Acting gel with no mesh, so re-baiting leaves no residue, per the maker
- Listing says no cooler is needed, unlike frozen bait
Cons
- Maker’s own chart rates its tear strength below the Longer Lasting formula
- Only two strips in the pack
- Listing size field (13 in) differs from the maker’s about 12 in
Who should buy it
Anglers fishing water below the maker’s 65F note who want a shelf-stable strip they can also use as a jig trailer.
- Linked variant: Fast Acting, shrimp scent, Orange
- Form: bait strip, cut to size (maker)
- Strip size: 1/2 in wide, about 12 in long (maker)
- Pack: 2 baits (maker)
- Water-temperature note: best below 65F (maker)
- Species: “a wide variety of saltwater species” (maker)
- Price tier: $ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Fishbites E-Z Flea, Sand-Flea Bait Strip
Surf anglers in warmer water who want a sand-flea-scented strip to cut and hook.
$8.66 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTCVerdict
Fishbites sells this Longer Lasting strip as an alternative to sand flea, mole crab and sand crab bait, with a cloth binder in the middle and a note that it is best in water above 65F.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/SurfFishing thread on Fish Gum vs Fish Bites: Fishbites sand flea, formula not stated.
The maker’s page says: “The Longer Lasting formula features a cloth binder in the middle of the bait that keeps it on the hook despite the efforts of notoriously toothy bait stealers.” The note on temperature reads: “While Longer Lasting gel formulas are designed to work in all water temperatures, it’s best to use in them water temperatures above 65F.” The strip is 1/2 in wide and about 12 in long, two to a pack, in Orange & Flesh or Electric Chicken; the linked colour is Flesh/Orange. The Amazon listing calls it “Designed for surf fishing” and names a sand flea, mole crab and sand crab scent. Its target-species field reads “Crappie Trout Panfish”, which does not fit a saltwater bait, so we ignore that field and use the maker’s “wide variety of saltwater species”.
For context on why sand-flea scent shows up in surf guides, Outdoor Alabama’s table lists “Mole Crabs (“sand fleas”), small bucktails, plastic tail jigs.” for Florida pompano. That is a separate source about live mole crabs; Fishbites’ page does not name pompano or promise a catch. A poster on r/SurfFishing in the Mid-Atlantic writes, “Fishbites bloodworms followed by sand flea produce the most here.” The poster does not say which formula. Sold by Fishbites on Amazon at the time of writing.
Trade-off against pick 6: this is a scented gel strip you cut; the Berkley is a soft plastic sand-crab shape with a fixed 1 in length.
Specs: Fishbites Longer Lasting E-Z Flea, Flesh/Orange
Pros
- Sand-flea, mole-crab and sand-crab scent in a cut-to-size strip, per Fishbites
- Cloth binder that Fishbites says holds the bait on the hook against bait stealers
- Listing describes it as designed for surf fishing
Cons
- Maker’s note puts it best in water above 65F
- Listing’s target-species field does not match a saltwater bait
- Only two strips in the pack
Who should buy it
Surf anglers in warmer water who want a sand-flea-scented strip to cut and hook.
- Linked variant: Longer Lasting, sand flea/mole crab/sand crab scent, Flesh/Orange
- Form: bait strip with cloth binder (maker)
- Strip size: 1/2 in wide, about 12 in long (maker)
- Pack: 2 baits (maker)
- Water-temperature note: best above 65F (maker)
- Species: “a wide variety of saltwater species” (maker)
- Price tier: $ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Fishbites E-Z Mullet, Mullet-Scent Bait Strip
Anglers who want the Longer Lasting strip in a mullet scent for warmer water.
$9.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTCVerdict
Same Longer Lasting construction as pick 2 in a mullet scent, in Silver/Flesh.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Fishbites product page.
Fishbites’ page for the Longer Lasting E-Z Mullet gives the same format: “Available in 1/2″ wide, about 12″ long ribbons”, two baits per pack, usable “on a bare hook or as a trailer on a jig or skirt”, with the same note that it is best in water above 65F. The page names no species beyond “a wide variety of saltwater species” and no colours. The Amazon listing’s colour is Silver/Flesh and says the “fiber-mesh reinforced construction stays intact longer to reduce rebaiting during repeated casts in saltwater.”
Outdoor Alabama’s table lists “Cut bait (fresh mullet, croaker, menhaden), crabs, artificial lures (spoons, large plugs, jigs)” for red drum. That row is about fresh cut bait; Fishbites does not say this scented strip stands in for it. We found no independent test or owner post that names the E-Z Mullet. Sold by Fishbites on Amazon at the time of writing.
Trade-off against pick 2: both are Longer Lasting strips for warmer water; choose between a mullet scent and a sand-flea scent according to what your sources or local anglers point to.
Specs: Fishbites Longer Lasting E-Z Mullet, Silver/Flesh
Pros
- Mullet-scented strip in the Longer Lasting format, per Fishbites
- Usable on a bare hook or as a jig or skirt trailer, per the maker
- Fiber-mesh construction described on the listing
Cons
- No independent test or owner post found for this scent
- Maker’s note puts it best in water above 65F
- Only two strips in the pack
Who should buy it
Anglers who want the Longer Lasting strip in a mullet scent for warmer water.
- Linked variant: Longer Lasting, mullet scent, Silver/Flesh
- Form: bait strip with cloth binder (maker)
- Strip size: 1/2 in wide, about 12 in long (maker)
- Pack: 2 baits (maker)
- Water-temperature note: best above 65F (maker)
- Species: “a wide variety of saltwater species” (maker)
- Price tier: $ (live Amazon price in the table above)
FishGum Panhandle Punch Strips, Surf Bait Strips
Surf and pier anglers who want a single-scent strip and are fine with the maker's shellfish warning.
$13.89 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTCVerdict
FishGum sells scented surf bait strips, and the maker says all of its bait is the same flavor; the linked pack is the Panhandle Punch colour.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/SurfFishing thread on Fish Gum vs Fish Bites: FishGum, color not stated.
FishGum’s product page lists Panhandle Punch Strips, “2-Strips”, in “neon blue and chartreuse green”. It says: “All FISHGUM bait is the same flavor. FISHGUM combines all the scent found in crab, sand fleas, shrimp, clams, and more into one SCENTED FLAVOR.” The page carries a warning: “ALLERGY WARNING: THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS SHELLFISH” and “THIS PRODUCT IS NOT INTENDED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.” The maker’s page does not give the strip length or name a species. The Amazon listing is the source for both: it gives the size as 10.5 inches and, in the seller’s own text, says the strips are “Proven for redfish, whiting, drum, flounder and other saltwater species from beaches, piers and jetties”, with a title that names pompano, redfish and flounder. That is the seller’s claim on the listing, not an independent result.
Owner posts on r/SurfFishing are mixed and mostly compare it with Fishbites. One poster: “I use both. Fish Bites last longer, Fish Gum attracts more bites.” Another: “Fish bites. Fishgum get moldy as all hell.” A reply to that one: “No one else has this issue.” Another poster writes, “FishGum regardless of color is all same scent,” which matches the maker’s own wording. Sold by FISHGUM on Amazon at the time of writing; the maker also sells these strips on its own site, so compare the two before you buy.
Trade-off against picks 1 to 3: this is a single-scent strip sold by colour; the Fishbites strips are sold by scent and formula, with the maker’s temperature note.
Specs: FishGum Panhandle Punch Strips
Pros
- Surf-focused bait strip with a combined crab, sand-flea, shrimp and clam scent, per the maker
- Maker prints an allergen and not-for-consumption warning
- Listing names beaches, piers and jetties as places to use it
Cons
- Strip length and species appear only on the Amazon listing, not on the maker’s page
- Owner posts disagree on durability and one poster reports mould
- Listing species claims come from the seller, not an independent test
Who should buy it
Surf and pier anglers who want a single-scent strip and are fine with the maker’s shellfish warning.
- Linked variant: Panhandle Punch (neon blue and chartreuse green), 2 strips (maker)
- Form: bait strip (maker)
- Strip length: 10.5 in per the listing; not published by the maker
- Scent: one scent across the line (maker)
- Species: named on the listing only (pompano, redfish, whiting, drum, flounder)
- Allergen note: contains shellfish (maker)
- Price tier: $$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Berkley Gulp! Alive! Shrimp Assortment, Soft Shrimp Assortment
Anglers who rig live-shrimp style and want several colours of soft shrimp in one pack.
$21.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTCVerdict
Berkley’s page says to rig this soft shrimp “using any technique appropriate for live shrimp”, and the linked pack is the 3 in assortment, which Berkley lists as four colours.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Berkley product page.
The maker’s page lists model GAPSHR3-AST1 with the line “Assortment Includes: Molting, Natural Shrimp, New Penny, and Pearl White in the 3in Shrimp”, and describes the format: “Each bait has a natural presentation in action, scent, and taste.” Gulp! Alive! baits come packed in liquid; the page says the baits are “soaked in the powerful attractant” and “Put the bait back in the bucket to ReCharge its effectiveness.” Berkley does not publish how many baits are in the assortment on that page, and the Amazon listing’s size and weight fields are not usable, so we give no count. It names no species.
Salt Strong, a seller of lures, writes of the standard Gulp! Shrimp rather than this Alive! line: “Another fantastic shrimp lure is the Berkley Gulp!. While it doesn’t have the same action that the Prawn and Prawn, Jr do, its unique scent has been proven time after time for both recreational and tournament anglers.” Treat that as a seller’s view of a related model. Sold by Amazon.com at the time of writing.
Trade-off against pick 8: this is a four-colour assortment in a liquid pack; the Z-Man is a single-colour bag of ElaZtech plastic, which Z-Man calls 10X Tough.
Specs: Berkley Gulp! Alive! Shrimp Assortment, 3 in
Pros
- Four colours in one pack, per the maker’s assortment list
- Berkley says it can be fished with techniques used for live shrimp
- Pack liquid is meant to be reused to recharge the bait, per Berkley
Cons
- Count per pack is not published
- Soft plastic that needs a hook or jig head, so it is a rigging choice rather than a ready bait strip
- The seller-side praise we found covers the standard Gulp! Shrimp, not this Alive! assortment
Who should buy it
Anglers who rig live-shrimp style and want several colours of soft shrimp in one pack.
- Linked variant: Assortment, 3 in (Molting, Natural Shrimp, New Penny, Pearl White), model GAPSHR3-AST1 (maker)
- Form: soft bait packed in liquid (maker)
- Count per pack: not published
- Rigging: “any technique appropriate for live shrimp” (maker)
- Species: not published
- Price tier: $$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Sand Crab Flea, Soft Sand-Flea Bait
Anglers who want a sand-crab or sand-flea shaped soft bait in a fixed small size.
$8.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTCVerdict
Berkley’s page says the bait “Looks, feels, and smells like live sand crabs/fleas”, and the linked pack is the 1 in Natural Flea colour.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Berkley product page.
The maker lists a package count of 12 and a bait length of 1 in, and its features include “Match-the-hatch colors” and “Features Gulp! extreme scent dispersion”. Berkley lists the bait in Amber Glow, Natural Flea and New Penny; Natural Flea, the colour we link (listing part number GSSF1-NFL), was sold out on Berkley’s own store when we checked. The listing’s species field says “Saltwater fish” and the maker names none.
Pair this with the agency context in pick 2: Outdoor Alabama lists mole crabs (“sand fleas”) for Florida pompano. Berkley does not tie this product to that species. We found no independent test or owner post that names this variant.
Trade-off against pick 2: this is a fixed 1 in soft plastic you rig; the Fishbites is a strip you cut to size.
Specs: Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Sand Crab Flea, 1 in, Natural Flea
Pros
- Berkley describes it as looking, feeling and smelling like live sand crabs and fleas
- Twelve baits in the pack, per the maker
- Fixed 1 in length, so no cutting
Cons
- Linked colour was sold out on Berkley’s own store when we checked
- No independent test or owner post found for this variant
- Soft plastic that needs a hook, so rigging is up to you
Who should buy it
Anglers who want a sand-crab or sand-flea shaped soft bait in a fixed small size.
- Linked variant: Natural Flea, 1 in (Berkley SKU 1121664; listing part number GSSF1-NFL)
- Form: soft bait (maker)
- Count per pack: 12 (maker)
- Bait length: 1 in (maker)
- Species: not published by the maker
- Price tier: $ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Sandworm, Soft Sandworm
Anglers who want a soft worm-style bait in bulk and are happy to experiment with colour and local advice.
$8.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTCVerdict
Berkley’s Saltwater Sandworm comes in 2 in and 6 in, and owner posts on r/SurfFishing are split on where it works; the linked pack is the 2 in New Penny, listed as 24.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/SurfFishing thread ‘Berkley gulp’: 2 in camo and other colours; New Penny not stated.
The maker’s page shows Gulp!® Saltwater Sandworm in 2 in and 6 in without a package count; the “Pack of 24” comes from the Amazon listing’s title. In a r/SurfFishing thread titled “Berkley gulp”, the original poster, who normally uses live lugworms or razor clams, says they tried sandworms and had not caught anything with them. One reply: “The 2” camo worms are extremely productive in socal.” Another: “Gulp works great for fluke, and I’ve had occasional success with Porgy. But they absolutely don’t work for Striped Bass.” A third: “Northern Kingfish in NJ will bite these. I’ve cut them in half so they’re not so long. I think the Fishbites bloodworms worked better for me.” Those posters discuss the camo colour; New Penny is not named. They are individual accounts from different coasts, which is why we do not name a species for this pick. Sold by Amazon.com at the time of writing.
Specs: Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Sandworm, 2 in, New Penny
Pros
- Pack of 24 soft sandworm baits, per the listing title
- Berkley sells the line in 2 in and 6 in, so you can step up in size
- Posters report catches on the 2 in camo in some areas
Cons
- Posters disagree by coast and species, and one reports no catches
- The posts cover other colours, not New Penny
- Count appears only on the Amazon listing
Who should buy it
Anglers who want a soft worm-style bait in bulk and are happy to experiment with colour and local advice.
- Linked variant: Saltwater Sandworm, 2 in (5 cm), New Penny, pack of 24 (listing title)
- Form: soft bait (maker)
- Sizes sold by the maker: 2 in and 6 in
- Count per pack: 24 per the listing; not published by the maker
- Species: not published
- Price tier: $ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Z-Man Scented ShrimpZ, Scented Soft Shrimp
Anglers rigging a shrimp-shaped soft bait for the species Z-Man names.
$10.25 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTCVerdict
Z-Man’s page names redfish, seatrout, flounder, snook and tarpon for this scented ElaZtech shrimp; the linked pack is the 3 in New Penny.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Z-Man product page.
Z-Man’s page describes a “realistic 3” or 4” shrimp profile with our buoyant 10X Tough ElaZtech® material and the added attraction of Pro-Cure® Super Gel scent”. It lists the 3 in size as a 5-pack. The “10X Tough” is Z-Man’s own comparison with other soft plastics, not a test we can point to. The Amazon listing gives the colour as New Penny and the part number ends in PK5, which fits the five-pack; its species field reads “Bass, Striper, Redfish, Trout”, which is wider than Z-Man’s own list. We found no independent test or owner post that names the ShrimpZ.
Sold by Fair Services on Amazon at the time of writing, a third-party seller, not Z-Man or Amazon.com. Z-Man lists the 3 in five-pack at $5.99 on its own site, so compare that with the Amazon price in the box above before you buy.
Specs: Z-Man Scented ShrimpZ, 3 in, New Penny
Pros
- Z-Man names redfish, seatrout, flounder, snook and tarpon for this bait
- Scented with Pro-Cure Super Gel, per Z-Man
- Five baits in the 3 in pack, per the maker
Cons
- Third-party seller on Amazon at the time of writing; compare against Z-Man’s own list price
- No independent test or owner post found
- The listing’s species field differs from the maker’s list
Who should buy it
Anglers rigging a shrimp-shaped soft bait for the species Z-Man names.
- Linked variant: 3 in, New Penny (listing part number SSHRP3261PK5)
- Form: soft bait, ElaZtech material (maker)
- Count per pack: 5 (maker, 3 in size)
- Scent: Pro-Cure Super Gel (maker)
- Species named by Z-Man: redfish, seatrout, flounder, snook, tarpon
- Price tier: $$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Choosing Ocean Bait: Natural, Preserved or Scented
What a state agency lists for natural bait
Alabama’s Marine Resources Division publishes a table of bait by species. A few rows: Atlantic croaker, “Cut bait, squid, dead shrimp”; red drum, “Cut bait (fresh mullet, croaker, menhaden), crabs, artificial lures (spoons, large plugs, jigs)”; Florida pompano, “Mole Crabs (“sand fleas”), small bucktails, plastic tail jigs.”; sheepshead, “Live shrimp, hermit crabs or fiddler crabs, fished on the bottom or with a float.” (our guide to putting a bobber on a fishing line covers the float). For gray triggerfish the same table says: “The best bait is a piece of squid hooked on a very sharp, double-strength 1/0 or 2/0 hook.” That statement is the agency’s, about that one species and that Gulf region, not a general rule. A French sea-fishing magazine, Fishing.news, adds that “There are a multitude of easily available and very economical baits to catch many fish”, including meat from the fridge and homemade dough. Those are different from the shelf-stable picks here, which are for anglers who would rather carry something in the tackle bag.
Bait strips or soft baits?
The picks fall into two forms. Bait strips (picks 1 to 4) are cut to size and hooked, and the makers describe them as scented gel. Soft baits (picks 5 to 8) are plastics scented by the maker and rigged on a hook or jig head. The sources do not rank the two forms against each other, and we did not find a test that does.
Fast-acting or longer-lasting strips
Fishbites sorts its strips into two formulas, and its own page lays out the difference: Fast Acting has “No mesh – melts completely away”, a tear strength of 4 and a note that it is best below 65F; Longer Lasting has “Mesh embedded into center of bait”, a tear strength of 11 and is best above 65F. Picks 1 to 3 are one of each. The tear-strength figures are the maker’s in-house scale.
Scent on lures
Salt Strong’s advice is to add scent to hard baits, and it carves out Gulp! products because they come scented. That matches how Berkley and Z-Man describe their soft baits (picks 5 to 8). For hard baits and lures themselves, our types of fishing lures guide explains how they differ.
Picks by form: strips, Fishbites E-Z Shrimp Fast-Acting, Fishbites E-Z Flea, Fishbites E-Z Mullet, FishGum Panhandle Punch; soft baits, Berkley Gulp! Alive! Shrimp, Berkley Gulp! Sand Crab Flea, Berkley Gulp! Sandworm, Z-Man Scented ShrimpZ.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ocean Fishing Bait
Q. What is the best bait for fishing in the ocean?
No source we read names one. The Alabama agency’s table lists different bait for different species, from cut bait and squid to mole crabs and live shrimp, and the r/Fishing thread for this keyword has posters suggesting raw squid or shrimp and cut bait. Our eight picks are shelf-stable scented products, not a ranking of natural bait.
Q. What is the best bait for saltwater fishing?
It depends on the species, as the agency table shows. If you want something in your tackle bag, the Fishbites strips, FishGum strips and Berkley and Z-Man soft baits here are the forms the makers describe for saltwater use; each review says whether the maker names a species.
Q. What is the best bait for sea fishing?
Fishing.news, a sea-fishing magazine, says there are “a multitude of easily available and very economical baits to catch many fish” and suggests collecting your own bait where it is easy to do so. The shelf-stable picks here suit anglers who prefer not to gather or keep bait.
Q. What is the best lure for sea shore fishing?
That is a lure question, and Salt Strong’s guide lists seven lure types for it, from paddletail soft plastics to suspending twitchbaits. We cover lure types in our guide to types of fishing lures. Soft baits 5 to 8 here are scented plastics you can rig as lures.
Q. Do scented bait strips need a cooler?
Fishbites’ Amazon listing for the Fast Acting strip says they “require no cooler” and can be stored with your gear in a cool, dry place. That is the listing’s wording for that product, so check the pack for the others.
Q. Is FishGum safe to handle?
FishGum’s page says the product contains shellfish, is not intended for human consumption and should be kept away from children and pets. Follow the label.
Q. Do I need a licence or have size and bag limits to follow?
Those rules come from your state agency and change. Alabama’s agency lists its own saltwater licence and limit pages; this guide quotes none, so check your own coast’s agency before you fish. For a rod and reel to go with the bait, see our beginner rod-and-reel combos and spinning reel size guide.
