The short answer
The Abu Garcia Vendetta 6’9″ medium-heavy fast two-piece is the casting pick for jigs, worms and Texas rigs; the St. Croix Black Bass 6’10” medium-light extra-fast spinning model is the finesse pick; the Shimano Zodias B 6’10” medium-heavy moderate is the rod Wired2Fish names for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits.
Our verdict
Top Picks for Bass Rods by Action
“Best action rod for bass” here means the rod’s action (taper) matched to how you fish: action is where the blank bends when the tip is loaded, and power is how much force it takes to bend it (what medium-heavy power means). So every rod below is grouped by the action its maker states for the exact model we link: extra-fast and fast mostly for single-hook lures, moderate for crankbaits and bladed baits.
More rods, reels and line are in our fishing gear section.

How We Matched Action to Technique
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.
What every rod had to meet
- A bass rod whose maker states its action for the exact length, power and model we link; we print that action, not the Amazon listing’s wording.
- Line and lure ratings that suit bass lures on the maker’s own table, and the blank material as the maker names it.
- New and in stock on Amazon when we checked (November 3-4, 2026); the seller is named in each review.
- No more than three models from one series, each for a different technique.
Where the evidence comes from and what bass anglers say about action
Where the evidence comes from
Wired2Fish’s bass rod guide covers the exact Zodias B we link. TackleTour reviewed the Phenix X13 in 2015, an earlier build of the rod we link. The St. Croix Black Bass rests on Reddit posters; the Dobyns, Abu Garcia and Ugly Stik rest on maker specs only.
None of these eight is a pick in our baitcasting rods for bass, bass spinning rods, spinning rods under $100 or freshwater rods guides; those pages sort rods by reel type, price or species rather than by action.
What bass anglers say about action
In an r/Fishing_Gear thread on finesse rods, one poster says: “If i wanted something thats gonna be great for finesse (dropshot, zoom trick worms etc) id grab a ml/xf or a ml/f.” Another starts from the lures instead: “You want to get a rod that will cast the weights you require optimally, so the lure is in the middle of the casting weight.”
Detailed Reviews: 8 Bass Rods by Action
St. Croix Black Bass Spinning, Extra-Fast Finesse Spinning
6'10" ML extra fast spinning (RIS610MLXF) · SCIII carbon
Bass anglers who fish drop shots and light plastics on spinning gear.
$160.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 05:59 UTCVerdict
A 6’10” medium-light extra-fast spinning rod on St. Croix’s SCIII carbon; sold by Amazon.com.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/Fishing_Gear: Black Bass series, model not stated.
St. Croix rates the RIS610MLXF for 1/16-3/8 oz, the lightest range here: the ML extra-fast finesse setup the poster above describes. In an r/Fishing_Gear thread on the series, one poster writes: “The black bass is most likely a very good rod.” The same poster says it “used the same SCIII blank that the last gen Avid used, just with cheaper components”. Another poster in the same thread warns that St. Croix rods “snap easier than most because they go from soft tip to backbone too quickly (mainly their Fast and X Fast rods).” Neither says which Black Bass model they mean. This is one of three Black Bass models here: two extra-fast (spinning and casting) and one moderate.
Specs: 6’10” ML extra fast 1-piece (RIS610MLXF)
Pros
- Lightest lure rating here for drop shots and small plastics
- Split grip and SCIII carbon at a mid-range price
Cons
- A poster warns St. Croix fast and extra-fast tips can snap
- No independent test of this model found
Who should buy it
Bass anglers who fish drop shots and light plastics on spinning gear.
- Rating: 6-20 lb, 1/16-3/8 oz (St. Croix)

A 7’3″ medium-heavy fast that Dobyns lists for Senkos, flukes, spooks, spinnerbaits and Horny Toads; sold by Amazon.com.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Dobyns.
Dobyns lists “High modulus graphite blanks” and “Kevlar wrapping” for the series. We found no independent test. Against the Abu Garcia Vendetta (#4), also medium-heavy fast: the Dobyns is a 7’3″ one-piece against a 6’9″ two-piece, rated for lighter line and lures (10-17 lb, 1/4-3/4 oz against 12-20 lb, 1/4-1 oz), and higher-priced within the same tier.

6'6" M fast casting (USCBCA661M) · 24-ton graphite

A 6’6″ medium fast one-piece on Ugly Stik’s all-graphite blank; sold by MidwayUSA on Amazon at the time of writing.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Ugly Stik.
Ugly Stik says the Carbon series uses “100% 24-ton graphite” with a “solid graphite tip”, and its page carries a “10 Year Warranty on Ugly Stik® Rods”. Against the Black Bass casting (#2): fast rather than extra fast, a shorter 6’6″, and a lower price within the same tier.
Specs: 6’6″ M fast 1-piece (USCBCA661M)

Shimano Zodias B, Moderate Bladed-Bait Rod
6'10" MH moderate casting (ZDC610MHB) · Hi-Power X carbon
Anglers who throw chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and underspins and want a moderate tip.
$259.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 05:59 UTCVerdict
The one pick here independently reviewed at the exact model we link, a 6’10” medium-heavy moderate; sold by Shimano’s own store (SHIMANO FISH) on Amazon at the time of writing.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Wired2Fish: 6’10” MH moderate (ZDC610MHB).
Wired2Fish names it for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits and says its writer uses the ZDC610MHB with a Shimano Metanium and 25-pound braid: “But the 6-foot, 10-inch, medium-heavy moderate-action rod (rated for 3/8 to 1 ounce baits) absolutely slays it.” The same writer adds a caveat: “The specs on the Shimano Zodias B I use for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and other bladed baits like underspins might not be the most conventional.” Against the Black Bass moderate (#7): a similar rating, the independent review, and a premium tier.
Specs: 6’10” MH moderate 1-piece (ZDC610MHB)
Pros
- Exact-model praise from Wired2Fish for bladed baits
Cons
- Premium price for a moderate rod
- Wired2Fish says its bladed-bait specs “might not be the most conventional”
Who should buy it
Anglers who throw chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and underspins and want a moderate tip.
- Rating: 10-20 lb mono, 30-50 lb braid, 3/8-1 oz (Shimano)
- Action: moderate
- Blank: Hi-Power X carbon

St. Croix Black Bass Casting, Moderate Graphite Cranking Rod
7'2" MH moderate casting (RIC72MHM) · SCIII carbon
Anglers who want a graphite moderate rod for squarebills, medium divers and topwater.
$167.56 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 05:59 UTCVerdict
The moderate member of the Black Bass trio (#1, #2): a 7’2″ medium-heavy for treble-hook lures; sold by Amazon.com.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/Fishing_Gear: Black Bass series, model not stated.
Tackle Warehouse ties medium and medium-fast actions to “treble hooks, such as crankbaits and topwater lures or other reaction baits such as spinnerbaits”. St. Croix rates the RIC72MHM 3/8-7/8 oz. Against the Phenix (#8): graphite rather than glass composite, and a lighter rating. The Reddit comments under #1 cover the series, not this model.
Specs: 7’2″ MH moderate 1-piece (RIC72MHM)
Pros
- Moderate action on a graphite blank for crankbaits and topwater
Cons
- No independent test of this model found
- Graphite blank, not a glass blend like the Phenix (#8)
Who should buy it
Anglers who want a graphite moderate rod for squarebills, medium divers and topwater.
- Rating: 12-20 lb, 3/8-7/8 oz (St. Croix)
- Action: moderate

Phenix Composite X, Moderate Glass-Composite Cranker
7'6" moderate casting (X13-C) · S-glass/graphite composite
Anglers who throw big, deep-diving crankbaits and lipless baits.
$209.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 05:59 UTCVerdict
A 7’6″ moderate S-glass and graphite cranking rod rated to 3 oz; sold by Amazon.com.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, previous generation. TackleTour: X13 7’6″, 2015 build.
TackleTour reviewed the X13 in 2015, an earlier build (the current page lists a Fuji Trigger reel seat): “That means this stick makes an excellent tool for fishing medium to deep divers.” Its caveats sit next to that: “The one difficulty I did find with this stick was the short, nine and a half inch (9.5″) handle,” and it “would not be a great choice for jigs and soft plastics”. Phenix publishes no power for the X13; TackleTour’s spec table lists the 2015 rod as heavy.
Specs: 7’6″ moderate 1-piece (X13-C)
Pros
- Glass-composite blank built for medium and deep crankbaits
Cons
- TackleTour found the 2015 build’s handle short for two-handed casts
- Power not published by Phenix
- Rating: 10-25 lb, 1/2-3 oz (Phenix)
- Action: moderate
- Blank: S-glass/graphite composite
- Price tier: $$$
Which Rod Action for Which Bass Technique
Extra-fast: finesse and light single-hook lures
Tackle Warehouse explains that a fast rod “will bend in only the top third or less of the blank”, and that “Most bass rod actions are fast to very fast because this action generally provides better sensitivity and faster power for hooksetting.” The extra-fast picks (#1, #2) carry that further; #1 is the ML extra-fast setup the r/Fishing_Gear poster above describes for drop shots and trick worms.
Fast: jigs, worms and Texas rigs
Picks #3-#5 are fast; choose by power and lure rating. Seven of the eight picks are casting rods; new to them? See how to cast a baitcaster.
Moderate: crankbaits and bladed baits
“The ‘bite’ of a treble hook is not as deep as a big single worm hook and it is easier to tear the hook out of a strong fish, plus the slower action will not pull the lure out of the fish’s mouth before it fully engulfs it,” Tackle Warehouse writes. Bass Pro’s Robert Robbins gives the same advice for “crank baits, jerk baits, top waters”, though he uses “action” to mean stiffness: “I use a medium action for these lures, as the heavy action will tear the treble hooks out of the fish.”
Power, length and line rating
On length, Bass Pro’s writer “would prefer you use 6.6- to 7-foot rod.” Keep your line inside the maker’s line rating; Tackle Warehouse says “a heavy power rod will snap light lines too easily and heavy lines can snap a light rod.” For line choice see our bass fishing line guide.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bass Rod Action
Q. What is rod action?
How much of the rod bends when the tip is loaded: fast in the top third or less, moderate in the top half, per Tackle Warehouse. Labels vary between makers, so compare lure ratings too. Our light action spinning rods guide explains how “light action” is often used for light power.
Q. Is fast or moderate action better for bass?
Neither across the board: both guides above pair fast with single hooks and slower rods with treble hooks, which is why Bass Pro suggests starting with two rods.
Q. What action spinning rod is best for bass?
For finesse on spinning gear, the poster quoted above picks ML extra-fast or ML fast; the St. Croix Black Bass RIS610MLXF is an ML extra-fast. More spinning options are in our bass spinning rods guide.
