7 Wt Fly Rods: 10 Picks Compared

The short answer

The Redington Wrangler 790-4 is the medium-fast entry rod with a full-wells grip and fighting butt, the Lamson Guru 907-4 is the medium-fast mid-range rod an independent reviewer fished in its 7-weight, and the St. Croix Imperial USA IU907.4 is the fast, Wisconsin-built option with a 15-year transferable warranty.

Our verdict

Our Top Picks

A 7 weight sits between the classic 6 weight trout rod and the 8 weights built for big fish and saltwater. Yellow Dog Flyfishing, a fly shop, calls it “a versatile tool that bridges two worlds” in its 7-weight guide, and lists streamers, bass, salmon, carp and light saltwater among its uses. This guide covers ten 7 weights we confirmed in stock on Amazon. Every one is linked to its 9-foot, 7-weight, 4-piece variant.

What a 7 Wt Fly Rod Does Best

The number is the fly line the rod is built to cast, not a fish weight; our fly rod size guide explains the whole scale. Trident Fly Fishing, a fly shop, lists what 7-weight rods “are commonly used for” in its 7wt roundup: “Streamer fishing for Trout on larger rivers”, “Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass with bigger flies”, “Carp fishing, especially in windy conditions or with heavier patterns”, “Light saltwater applications like Bonefish, Redfish, and Snook” and “Striped Bass in calmer conditions or when fishing lighter lines and flies”.

Related guide: 8 Wt Fly Rods: 10 Picks Compared

Yellow Dog draws the limits on both sides. A 6 weight, it says, “is sufficient for small poppers at shorter distances (20-40 feet)”, but for “deer hair bugs, large topwater patterns, or large streamers/crayfish patterns” a 7 weight “is far better suited”. In saltwater it adds: “If you’re fighting for distance or the rod isn’t turning over the fly effectively, it’s time to reach for an 8-weight.”

Length and action change the feel as much as the weight does. All ten picks here are 9 feet; makers also sell 9’6″ and 10′ 7 weights, which Yellow Dog suggests for steelhead “to aid in mending and roll casting”. A moderate rod bends deeper and is easier to feel loading; a fast rod bends mostly near the tip and suits wind, distance and heavy flies. Our guide to how to choose a fly rod covers action in more detail.

Picks: the moderate option is the TFO Pro III; medium-fast are the Redington Wrangler, Lamson Guru and St. Croix Connect; fast are the Redington Vice, Redington EDC, St. Croix Imperial USA, Echo Streamer X and Maxcatch Extreme. Sources differ on the Echo ION XL.

How These Ten 7 Weights Made the List

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.

What each rod had to clear

  • A true 9-foot 7-weight variant stocked on Amazon, with the buy box held by Amazon.com, the brand’s own storefront, or a named fly shop or retailer shipping through Amazon at the maker’s or a retailer’s regular list price.
  • Line weight, length, action and piece count confirmed on the maker’s page and cross-checked against the Amazon listing; where the two differ, the review says so.
  • A distinct role; for the closest pairs (Imperial USA and EDC, Guru and Connect), the reviews say how they differ.
  • A named source for what the rod does on the water, graded by who wrote it.
Who wrote the reviews we cite and what 7wt owners say in the forums

Who wrote the reviews we cite

Three picks have an independent review of the 7 weight itself: Flyfishin.asia on the Lamson Guru, The Mission magazine on the Echo Streamer X and Chrome Catchers on the Maxcatch Extreme. Hatch Magazine, BC Flyguys and Casting Across reviewed a sibling weight in the same series, and Fly Fishing With Jeff a 9′ 7wt Imperial whose generation it does not state; each review below says which rod was tested. Fly shops that sell these rods (Stroud Tackle, North 40, Murray’s Fly Shop, Trident, Yellow Dog, Raft and Fly, Mad River Outfitters) are labelled retailers, because they profit from the sale. Three picks are sold on Amazon by a fly shop or retailer rather than by Amazon or the brand; we name the seller in each of those reviews.

What 7wt owners say in the forums

The r/flyfishing thread on 7wt streamer rods that ranks for this search starts with a warning from the poster: “I tested the waters with a budget 7 wt, but the swing weight was awful and I really had to force the longer casts, wearing out my arm”. One reply argues “The best 7wt is an 8wt” and that “either is overkill for average trout in the 8-12” range, but neither is overkill for truly large trout”; another writes “I would definitely steer away from extra fast rods” for big flies and heavy lines. On the budget side, one reply suggests learning the double haul first and calls the “Redington Vice” “a bargain rocket-launcher”.

Redington Wrangler Fly Fishing Rod, 4-Piece Fly Rod…

Redington Wrangler

9' 7wt, 4-piece · Medium-fast

Anglers who want an entry-tier 9-foot 7 weight for streamers, bass and the odd saltwater trip, bought straight from the brand.

$199.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

Verdict

A medium-fast 9-foot 7 weight with a full-wells grip and fighting butt, sold by Redington’s own storefront with a lifetime warranty.

Evidence: Retailer review (sells it), not independent. Stroud Tackle: 9′ 6wt 690-4S (fighting-butt version).

Redington says the Wrangler 790-4 “is the go-to setup for big flies, heaver lines, and aggressive-fighting fish. From smallmouth to big browns, to small bonefish, snook, and steelhead, it really does do it all.” The series is built on a “Performance medium-fast action blank” with an anodized aluminum reel seat, and Redington’s Amazon listing confirms that the “Full-wells cork handle and fighting butt” come on the 6WT Salt size and above, which includes this 7 weight. In its review of the Wrangler combo kits, Hatch Magazine notes that the Bass model in the kit line is a 9’ 7-weight (combo kit).

The most detailed test of a Wrangler comes from Stroud Tackle, a shop that stocks the series, so read it as a retailer review of the 690-4S, the 9′ 6 weight with a fighting butt, not this rod. It wrote: “Redington describes the rods as having a medium-fast action and I concur.” The same review found “a bit more swing weight (feeling a bit tip heavy) compared to rods that cost 2X or more” and handle cork “with lots of filler compared to high end rods”.

Pros

  • Medium-fast blank Redington aims at big flies, heavier lines and hard-fighting fish
  • Full-wells grip and fighting butt on the 7 weight
  • Sold by Redington’s own storefront, with a lifetime warranty

Cons

  • A retailer’s test of the 6 weight found it tip-heavy next to pricier rods
  • Cork with filler, per the same review
  • No independent test of the 7 weight found

$199.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:43 UTC

Verdict

Redington’s fast-action, multi-modulus 7 weight with saltwater-grade components and a fighting butt handle.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Hatch Magazine: 9wt (length not stated).

Redington calls the Vice 790-4 “one of the most versatile rods we build”, using the same smallmouth-to-steelhead line it uses for the Wrangler. The difference is in the blank: the Vice is a “fast-action rod range” on “multi-modulus carbon fiber blanks”, with black anodized snake guides, saltwater-grade components and a fighting butt handle. Amazon’s listing title calls it a moderate action rod, but Redington’s page and the listing’s own bullets say fast.

Independent Hatch Magazine, in 2016, fished “Redington’s 9-weight VICE” for Louisiana redfish, not this 7 weight, and wrote: “The VICE simply did what I wanted it to do and with little cajoling.” It added: “The VICE isn’t as light as more expensive fast-action rods, but the feel and weight of the rod were comfortable enough for all-day blind casting”. In the Reddit thread above, a poster calls the Vice “a bargain rocket-launcher” without saying which weight.

Anglers who want one 7 weight for streamer days at home and a bonefish or redfish trip.

$299.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:43 UTC

Verdict

Echo’s fresh-and-saltwater rod with a full-wells grip and fighting butt, which Echo says is popular with guides; sources disagree on how fast it is.

Evidence: Retailer review (sells it), not independent. North 40 Outfitters: variant not stated.

Echo pitches the ION XL as “Fresh+Saltwater rods at an affordable price point” with “Remarkably low swing-weight and forgiving action”, and says it “is equally at home stripping flesh flies as it is dropping a merkin to a tailing permit.” Echo also calls it “Our most popular rod for fly fishing guides around the globe”; that is the maker’s claim. Echo’s page gives no action word. Trident’s listing says “Rod Action: Medium-Fast” with a full-wells grip, fighting butt and a double uplocking anodized reel seat; Amazon’s listing says fast.

Related guide: 10 Wt Fly Rods: 9 Picks Compared

North 40 Outfitters, a retailer that sells it, writes that “The new ION XL still has the strong back bone in a medium-fast to fast action, depending on what size rod it is”, and that its reviewer “used it on the Methow River for streamer fishing and it handles the chunky streamers with ease.” The review does not say which weight he fished.

Amazon’s buy box for this rod is The Kingfisher, a fly shop shipping through Amazon, at the list price Trident shows; the listing showed one left when we checked.

$295.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

Verdict

A medium-fast 7 weight sold and shipped by Amazon itself, which a Virginia fly shop calls “ideal for smallmouth bass”.

Evidence: Retailer review (sells it), not independent. Murray’s Fly Shop: 9′ 7wt, 4 pc.

St. Croix’s CO790-4 page lists a medium-fast 9′ #7 in four pieces on “High-modulus SCIII and SCII carbon fiber blanks”, with chrome snake guides, a modified full wells cork handle, a fighting butt with composite end cap, an uplocking machined aluminum seat, a rod tube with cloth bag and a five-year warranty. St. Croix says it is “Designed in Park Falls, WI.” and “Precision crafted at St. Croix South-Fresnillo, Mexico”, although the Amazon title says made in the USA.

We found no independent test. Murray’s Fly Shop, which stocks the series, writes: “7-weight, 9ft 4pc is ideal for smallmouth bass. It will handle flies and bugs up to size 4, while casting a tight loop in order to give good accuracy below over hanging tree limbs.”

9' 7wt, 4-piece · Moderate

Newer fly anglers stepping up to a 7 weight who want a rod that is easier to feel loading.

$229.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

Verdict

TFO’s moderate-action rod built to help newer casters feel the rod load, with a full-wells grip, fighting butt and a lifetime warranty.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. BC Flyguys: 9′ 6wt (906-4).

TFO says the Pro III “is built to help anglers understand their cast” and was “Designed with a wider sweet spot, it allows anglers to feel the rod load more clearly”. Its model table lists the TF 07 90 4 P3 as a 9’0″ 7 weight in four pieces, moderate action, 4 oz. Mad River Outfitters, a retailer, describes the same rod as “Full Wells Grip and fighting butt- 4 ounces- Moderate Action”. Amazon’s listing labels this size “Two-handed”, but the model code is TFO’s single-hand 9-foot rod; TFO’s two-handed Pro III rods are 11 and 13 feet.

Reviewers do not agree with TFO’s action word. Independent BC Flyguys fished the 9′ 6wt over “an estimated 40 outings” and called it “This medium-fast action rod”, adding “I can confirm the Pro III has a bit of a larger “sweet spot””. Trident, a retailer testing the 5 weight, wrote “The Pro III is a fast-action rod” and that at 30 feet “we struggled to feel the rod load”. Neither tested this 7 weight.

Amazon’s buy box for this rod is Gritr, an outdoor retailer shipping through Amazon, at TFO’s list price.

Pros

Cons

Lamson Guru

9' 7wt, 4-piece · Medium-fast

Freshwater anglers after a mid-range 7 weight for bass, pike and big trout who value a tested rod over a long list of features.

$309.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

Verdict

A medium-fast freshwater 7 weight with Lamson’s rail-style Lockdown reel seat, independently fished in this weight.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Flyfishin.asia: 7wt (all Guru rods are 9′ 4-piece).

Lamson says the Guru is a “medium-fast action rod” that “will surprise pros and novice anglers alike”, with “a forgiving feel”. Every Guru is 9 feet in four pieces, the 7 weight comes with a fighting butt, and the Lockdown reel seat lets a reel “mount on machined aluminum rails, instead of on a round reel seat”. Lamson’s FAQ says “Guru rods are intended for fresh water use and will work for trout of all sizes, as well as other warm water species like bass and pike. The larger weights are great for salmon, and steelhead.” The product description, though, lists “inshore saltwater fishing” among the waters the range covers, so Lamson’s two pages do not agree.

Independent Flyfishin.asia fished “the 7-weight Lamson Guru fly rod recently in Sabah Borneo for mahseer and then later on for pacu”. Its verdict: “For a lower priced fly rod targeted at beginners, I think the Lamson Guru is great. It doesn’t fish like a beginner rod.” The same reviewer found it “slightly heavy but not so much that it bothers me during a long day of fishing”, was “not so sure of the cork quality”, and found the rod tube “longer than it needs to be”. Trident, a retailer that did not name the weight it tested, wrote that “the Ritz style grip is too thin and short for average or larger hands”.

Guru or St. Croix Connect? Both are medium-fast mid-range 7 weights. The Guru has Lamson’s rail-style Lockdown seat and an independent test of this weight, but its product page names no warranty term; the Connect carries St. Croix’s five-year warranty and is sold by Amazon, but the only write-up we found is a retailer’s.

Anglers who want one fast 9-foot 7 weight for streamers, bass poppers, salmon and an occasional flats trip.

Verdict

Redington’s “Everyday Carry” fast-action 7 weight, pitched from trophy-trout streamers to bonefish flats.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Casting Across: 9’6″ 5wt.

Redington says the EDC 790-4 “is an exceptionally versatile rod that can be used in applications ranging from trophy trout on streamers, bass poppers, Alaska salmon, and light-duty saltwater use on bonefish flats.” It lists a “Versatile Fast Action”, Nano Resin Graphite blank, black chrome snake guides with ceramic-insert strippers, a hidden hook keeper in the reel seat, a saltwater-ready anodized aluminum seat, and on this model a full-wells cork handle with a rubberized cork fighting butt.

Independent Casting Across bought the 9’6″ 5wt, not this 7 weight, and after “six months of casting the Redington EDC” wrote “I think it meets the criteria” for an everyday rod. Its author adds that the rods “err towards the medium-fast side of fast”.

Verdict

A fast 7 weight designed and built in Park Falls, Wisconsin, sold by Amazon, with a 15-year transferable warranty.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Fly Fishing With Jeff: 9′ 7wt Imperial, generation not stated.

St. Croix’s IU907.4 page lists a fast 9′ #7 in four pieces with a “Dynamic blend of high-modulus/high- strain SCIV carbon and premium-quality SCII carbon”, PVD coated snake guides, 3D stripper guides, a full wells cork handle, an uplocking machined-aluminum seat, a fighting butt with EVA end cap and a “15-year transferable warranty”. It is “Designed and precision crafted in Park Falls, WI.” St. Croix’s own store showed this model sold out; Amazon had it in stock when we checked.

Fly Fishing With Jeff, an independent blog, reviewed “the St Croix Imperial in a 9′, 7 wt model” and wrote that it “was exceptional and frankly, surprising”, with “the speed and strength to allow me to punch the fly line and most importantly, the fly, into tight, shady spots where the smallmouth bass were holding.” The post is undated, quotes a price below St. Croix’s current list and does not say “Imperial USA”, so it may describe an earlier version of the rod.

Imperial USA or Redington EDC? Both are fast premium-tier 7 weights. The Imperial USA is built in Park Falls, Wisconsin, with a 15-year transferable warranty, and the review we found fished an Imperial of unstated generation for smallmouth; Redington pitches the EDC as far as “light-duty saltwater use on bonefish flats” with a saltwater-ready seat, but its page gives no warranty term.

$574.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:43 UTC

Verdict

A fast streamer rod designed with Kelly Galloup, built around a powerful butt section and his custom grip, for big flies and sinking lines.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. The Mission: 9′ 7wt.

Echo says the Streamer X follows “a blueprint given to us by streamer innovator Kelly Galloup”, and that “These new rods are designed to hit a coffee cup at 50 feet with a fly bigger than the cup.” It describes a “fast tip and powerful bottom section” with “Kelly’s custom handle shape”. Echo’s page gives no specs table; Raft and Fly, a retailer, lists the STR790 as 9’0″, 7 weight, 4 pieces, 4.3 oz, fast action, with the Kelly Galloup grip and an anodized aluminum seat.

Independent The Mission magazine, which says “Tim Rajeff sent us a quiver of Echo Fly Fishing rods to review”, had a tester fish the 7 weight on South African rivers: “I was pleased that the rod was a 9 foot 7-weight, which is one of my favourite weights for big streamers.” He found that “The rod is certainly not fast and shot out lines and heavy flies with ease”, describing a quick tip and butt with a softer middle, and concluded “The Streamer X performed brilliantly and is a now my go to streamer rod.” Trident, a retailer reviewing the 6 weight, notes it “is not the most mechanically accurate rod in this group” and is “less suitable for throwing the largest articulated patterns throughout an entire day.”

Amazon’s buy box for this rod is Stillwater Fly Shop, shipping through Amazon at the list price Raft and Fly shows; the listing showed one left when we checked.

Budget buyers who want a fast 7 weight as a first big-fly rod, a spare, or a rod to lend.

$58.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:35 UTC

Verdict

An entry-price fast-action 7 weight, independently fished in this exact size.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Chrome Catchers: 9′ 7wt.

Maxcatch says the Extreme is “Designed For A Premium Entry Level” with “Pure IM7 24T plus 30T carbon fiber”, “A fast action design rod blank to excel in distance and presentation”, hard-chromed snake guides and a machined aluminum seat “with two up-locking rings”. The Amazon detail-page title says IM6 while the bullets and the maker’s page say IM7, so treat the blank grade as the maker’s claim.

Chrome Catchers, an independent blog that earns Amazon commissions, bought “the Extreme 9′ 7 weight fly rod” and wrote that “casting out to 70-plus feet was effortless” and “I found the rod to be far better than other rods at this price point.” The Amazon listing gives a one-year warranty; Maxcatch’s page publishes none.

Matching a 7 Wt to Your Water

For streamers. Yellow Dog calls the 7 weight a “Go-to Streamer Rod for Many Anglers” and says it opens the door to “heavier lines, larger patterns, and more demanding conditions”. Echo built the Streamer X for that job; the Vice and EDC are fast all-rounders Redington pitches at streamers.

Picks: Echo Streamer X, Redington Vice, Redington EDC.

For bass and smallmouth. Yellow Dog says a 7 weight “provides more backbone for horsing fish out and preventing a break off” around docks, pads and timber. Murray’s Fly Shop calls the Connect 7 weight “ideal for smallmouth bass”.

Picks: St. Croix Connect, St. Croix Imperial USA, Redington Wrangler.

For light saltwater. Yellow Dog says the 7 weight shines “In low-wind conditions, on super skinny flats, or when delicate presentations are key”, and points to an 8 weight when the wind rises. Lamson’s FAQ says the Guru is intended for fresh water, so it is not among these.

Picks: Echo ION XL, Redington EDC, Redington Vice.

For beginners and the budget. A rod that bends deeper makes it easier to feel the cast load; our guide to fly fishing for beginners and how to cast a fly rod cover the basics. Price tiers here are relative; live prices are in the comparison table.

Picks: TFO Pro III, Redington Wrangler, Maxcatch Extreme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a 7 weight fly rod good for?

Fly shops describe it as the rod for bigger flies and stronger fish than a trout 6 weight handles: streamers on larger rivers, bass bugs, carp, salmon, and light saltwater such as bonefish and redfish in calm conditions. Trident and Yellow Dog, both retailers, list those uses in their 7-weight guides quoted above.

Q. How big of a fish can a 7 wt fly rod handle?

Shops answer by species rather than pounds. Yellow Dog names largemouth and smallmouth bass, carp, “pinks, chum, sockeye, or coho salmon” in Alaska, steelhead on “small to medium sized rivers”, and smaller bonefish, redfish, juvenile tarpon and snook. For bigger fish, heavy wind or larger saltwater flies, it points to an 8 weight; our fly rod size guide shows where each weight fits.

Q. Can you use a 5 wt line on a 7 wt fly rod?

Makers rate each rod for its own line weight, and we found no maker here that suggests going two sizes lighter. Line labels are not exact, though: the Flyfishin.asia reviewer of the Guru notes that a line “AFFTA approved” as a 7 weight “should be 185gr” in the head, and cast his 7 weight with a line sold as a 6 weight because its head weighed 185 grains. If you experiment, compare head weights in grains, not the label.

Q. What size flies can a 7 wt rod cast?

Murray’s Fly Shop says the Connect 7 weight “will handle flies and bugs up to size 4”. Yellow Dog lists “deer hair bugs, large topwater patterns, or large streamers/crayfish patterns like a Blane Chocklett Finesse Gamechanger”. A poster who mentions guiding clients wrote in a Reddit thread on the Streamer X: “With a fast 7, I throw little size 6 stuff all the way up to 8in flies.” Our guide to types of fly fishing flies explains each group.

Q. What reel goes on a 7 weight fly rod?

A reel rated for 7-weight line (often sold as 6/7 or 7/8) with room for the line and backing. Our fly reel size guide, how to set up a fly rod and reel and how to put backing on a fly reel walk through the choice and the setup.

Q. Should a 7 weight be 9 feet long?

Nine feet is the common default and the length all ten picks here use. Several of these series also sell longer 7 weights: Redington lists 9’6″ and 10′ 7 weights in the Vice and EDC series and a 10′ Wrangler, and Echo and St. Croix sell 10′ 7 weights in the ION XL and Imperial USA lines. Yellow Dog suggests a 9.5 or 10-foot rod for steelhead mending and roll casting.

The bottom line

Final Verdict

For an angler buying a first 7 weight, the Redington Wrangler 790-4 (check price) is the place to start: a medium-fast 9-foot rod with a full-wells grip and fighting butt, sold by Redington with a lifetime warranty, though its main test comes from a shop that sells it and covered the 6 weight. In the mid-range, the Lamson Guru 907-4 (check price) is the one an independent reviewer fished in this weight, for mahseer and pacu: a medium-fast 7 weight with a rail-style reel seat. For a fast, US-built rod with a transferable warranty, the St. Croix Imperial USA IU907.4 (check price) is built in Wisconsin and carries St. Croix’s 15-year transferable warranty.
