Fly Rod and Reel Combos: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

The Pflueger President XT 9′ 5wt is the budget medium-fast trout combo sold by Amazon itself, with a die-cast aluminum reel per Pflueger; the Echo Lift Kit 690 is the mid-tier 9-foot 6 weight that Fly Fusion’s reviewer called “a terrific fly rod” in the 5 weight; and the Lamson Liquid Outfit 6wt is the upper-tier medium-fast outfit with a U.S.-made fly line, backing and leader already on the reel.

Our verdict

Our Top Picks

A fly rod and reel combo, also sold as an outfit or kit, puts a rod, a matched reel and often the fly line in one box. Trout and Steelhead, a guide’s site, puts it simply: “A fly fishing rod and reel combo usually includes the rod, reel, backing, fly line, and a leader. All you need to do is tie on a fly.” What is actually in the box varies by maker, so this guide lists it for each of eight combos sold on Amazon as one listing, from budget trout outfits to a euro nymphing outfit and a saltwater kit, each linked to the exact line weight and length described.

Price tier

Price tier: $ = budget, $$ = mid-range, $$$ = upper tier, relative to the combos in this guide. The tiers are broad bands, and a combo near the edge of one can sit close to the next. Live Amazon prices are in the comparison table.

What Comes in a Fly Rod and Reel Combo

A combo matches three numbers for you: the rod’s line weight, the reel’s size and the fly line’s weight. A 5 weight rod casts a 5 weight line and wants a reel sized for it, often sold as 4/5/6. Our fly rod size guide and fly reel size guide explain the numbers.

Beyond the rod and reel, the contents differ. Seven of the eight makers list backing, a fly line and a leader with the reel; the Cortland’s leader is a 20-foot euro leader, and the Maxcatch adds flies, a fly box and small tools. Echo’s kit page lists only the rod, reel and case. Each review lists what the maker says is in the box and says where the maker is silent or sources disagree. If you would rather spool a reel yourself, see how to put backing on a fly reel and how to tie leader to fly line.

The trade-off of buying in one box is the line and reel. Trout and Steelhead lists among a combo’s cons that “With many rod and reel combos, the rod is usually pretty good, but the fly line and the fly reel are of lower quality.” In the r/flyfishing thread on picking a combo that ranks for this search, one poster wrote that “These kits usually cheap out on the line, sometimes the reel too.” Each review below names the line and reel where the maker lists them.

How These Eight Outfits Were Chosen

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.

What each combo had to clear

  • Sold on Amazon as one listing (rod and reel together), new and in stock, with a seller holding the buy box; any seller other than Amazon or the brand is named in its review.
  • The exact line weight, length and piece count linked, confirmed against the maker’s page and the Amazon listing.
  • What is in the box (reel, line, backing, leader, case) stated as the maker lists it; where the maker is silent, other sources labelled and set side by side.
  • A distinct role by use or price tier, with a stated trade-off where two combos overlap.
  • A named source for how the rod fishes, graded by who wrote it.
Who the sources are and what anglers said in the ranking thread

Who the sources are

Athlon Outdoors tested the exact Pflueger combo we link. Into Fly Fishing, Fly Fusion, Trout and Steelhead and Hatch Magazine, all independent, tested a package of unstated line weight or a sibling of the Maxcatch, Echo, Cortland and Wrangler picks. Glenwood Springs Outdoors and Outdoor Prolink sell what they reviewed (TFO Pilot, Lamson Liquid) and are labelled retailers. We found no published test of the TFO Dispatch Kit. Each review names its seller when that is not Amazon or the brand.

What anglers said in the ranking thread

In the r/flyfishing thread, a spin angler choosing between an Orvis and a Fenwick combo for Atlantic salmon got two kinds of advice. On warranty, two posters steered toward the dearer Orvis outfit; on line, one wrote “The orvis is a good set up but the fly line is trash. I’d recommend getting a good fly line with the orvis.” Another poster, who wrote “I have experience with Orvis streamline/Clearwater and Echo lift/carbon”, added “So far I like echo better. Orvis feels too stiff.” and “It may save you some money and hassle to piece together a kit and get a better line to start.” That poster did not say which Echo Lift size or package they used; the Echo Lift Kit is pick 3 here.

Pflueger President XT 9′ 5wt, Amazon-Sold Budget Combo

Amazon-sold budget combo
Pflueger President XT Fly Reel and 9' 4-Piece Fishing Rod…

Pflueger President XT

9' 5wt, 4-piece · Medium-fast

Beginners who want a complete 5 weight combo shipped by Amazon for ponds, bass and trout.

$229.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Verdict

A budget medium-fast 5 weight combo sold and shipped by Amazon, with a die-cast aluminum reel per Pflueger, which Athlon Outdoors tested in this exact size.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Athlon Outdoors: 9′ 5wt (#5) combo.

Pflueger’s President XT page lists model PFCBOPRXT905 as a 9-foot, medium-fast, 5 weight, 4-piece rod with a carbon fiber reel seat, paired with a 4/5/6 “Die cast aluminum fly reel with Rulon disc drag” that comes “Pre-spooled with backing, weight forward floating twin colored fly line with welded loops, and knotless tapered leader”. Pflueger pitches it from “trout in tranquil streams” to “bass in sprawling lakes”.

Related guide: Floating Fly Lines: 9 Picks Compared

The Amazon listing calls the reel “graphite” and “Built for Left-handed anglers”; we follow Pflueger, and Athlon’s reviewer also found “the die-cast aluminum fly reel instead of a plastic one.”

Athlon Outdoors fished the 9′ #5 combo at ponds and on a trout river and called it “a great combo for all fly anglers, but especially novice anglers, with room for some specific improvements.” On price, the same reviewer wrote: “While most long-time fly anglers wouldn’t consider this combo expensive, I think it’s pricey for beginners. There are many less costly options, but I seriously doubt they’re of this quality.” Its cons: “Eye alignment could be made easier with some markings” and “I don’t cast as well with it as I do with my other combo.”

Specs (linked: 9′ 5wt, 4-piece, PFCBOPRXT905)

  • Line weight, length, pieces: 5 wt, 9′, 4 (maker)
  • Action: medium-fast (maker)
  • In the box: rod, 4/5/6 reel, backing, WF floating line with welded loops, knotless tapered leader, case (maker)
  • Reel: die-cast aluminum, Rulon disc drag, capacity WF5+50 (20lb Dacron) (maker); “graphite” and left-handed on the Amazon listing
  • Weight: not published
  • Warranty: one year, original purchaser, defects (Pflueger)

Pros

  • Medium-fast 9-foot rod with a die-cast aluminum reel, per Pflueger
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon.com
  • Independently tested in the exact 9′ 5wt size

Cons

  • Athlon’s tester found it “pricey for beginners” and wanted markings to line up the guides
  • Amazon lists the reel for left-handed anglers; Pflueger gives no handle position
  • One-year warranty

Maxcatch Extreme Combo 9′ 5wt, Budget Kit With Flies

Budget kit with flies
M MAXIMUMCATCH Maxcatch Extreme Fly Fishing Combo Kit…

Maxcatch Extreme

9' 5wt, 4-piece · Fast

Budget buyers who want one box with flies and tools for a first season or a spare outfit to lend.

$84.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Verdict

A direct-to-Amazon budget kit that adds flies, a fly box and small tools to a fast-action rod and pre-spooled ECO reel, sold by the brand.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Into Fly Fishing: Extreme package, line weight not stated.

Maxcatch’s Extreme ECO Reel Combo page sells this size as “Extreme 9ft 5wt 4pcs +5/6wt Silver ECO”, with the reel “pre-loaded with line, backing, and leaders” and “12 hand-tied flies in a waterproof box”, tools, a cap and a travel case. It calls the blank “Pure IM7 24T + 30T carbon fiber” and “A fast-action rod blank”; the Amazon bullets match. The Amazon listing gives a one-year warranty; Maxcatch’s page publishes none.

Into Fly Fishing, an independent site that earns Amazon commissions, reviewed an Extreme package without saying which line weight it fished, and wrote of its reel that “it’s made from die-cast aluminum instead of the better-made forged aluminum Avid reel that comes with the Premier set”. It likes that the kit “Includes almost everything you need for fly fishing”, and writes: “In my experience, the rod doesn’t feel as high-quality as the Maxcatch Premier rod and the Eco Reel.” Its dislikes include “The reel isn’t as high quality as the Premier Combo.” and “The rod is a bit heavy and stiff.”

How it differs from the Pflueger, the other budget 5 weight: the Maxcatch adds flies and tools to the box and Maxcatch calls the rod fast; the Pflueger is medium-fast per Pflueger, comes from an established tackle maker, and includes line, leader and a case but no flies.

Specs (linked: 9′ 5wt, 4-piece, 5/6 ECO reel)

  • Line weight, length, pieces: 5wt, 9′, 4 (maker)
  • Action: fast (maker)
  • In the box: rod, aluminum large-arbor ECO reel with backing, WF floating line and leaders, 12 flies, fly box, reel cover, retractor, nipper, cap, travel case (maker)
  • Blank: IM7 24T + 30T carbon fiber (maker)
  • Weight: not published
  • Warranty: 1 year (Amazon listing)

Pros

  • Flies, fly box, nipper and retractor in the box with the rod and reel
  • Fast carbon blank, per Maxcatch
  • Sold by the brand’s storefront, shipped by Amazon

Cons

  • Into Fly Fishing found the reel die-cast rather than forged, and the rod “a bit heavy and stiff”
  • Maxcatch’s page publishes no warranty; the listing says one year
  • Tested line weight not stated

Echo Lift Kit 690, Mid-Tier 6 Weight Kit

Echo Lift Kit

9' 6wt, 4-piece · Medium-fast

Anglers who want a 9-foot 6 weight, the weight Trout and Steelhead's chart puts on "big trout, bass, and lake fishing", and who are happy to add their own line.

$249.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Verdict

Echo’s medium-fast 9-foot 6 weight kit, which Fly Fusion’s reviewer called “a terrific fly rod” in the 5 weight, sold on Amazon by a fly shop; Echo lists a rod, reel and case, not a fly line.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Fly Fusion: LIFT 9′ 5wt rod (2022).

Echo’s Lift Kit page lists the LIFT-690 as 9’0″, 6 weight, four pieces, 3.9 oz, “Med Fast”, with chrome guides, a black anodized aluminum seat, the “Echo Base impact-resistant resin frame reel” and a “Fabric-covered rod & reel case”.

Sources disagree on whether a line comes in the box:

  • Echo’s kit page: rod, reel and case; no fly line, backing or leader listed.
  • The Amazon listing we link: title “ECHO Lift Fly Fishing Kit w/Rod Reel and case”, and its only bullet reads “ECHO LIFT KIT 690 w/rod reel and case”.
  • Into Fly Fishing, an independent site: “Really basic kit, only the rod, tube and reel”, and “I just wish someone would put together a combo with this gear that has more essentials like line, backing, leaders, and flies”, although its own table marks line and backing as included.
  • TCO Fly Shop, a retailer, lists its own Lift 9′ 5wt outfit as rod, “Composite Fly Reel”, “Weight Forward Fly Line”, “9ft Tapered Leader” and “Carrying Case”; that is TCO’s outfit, not this 690 listing.

Plan on buying a 6 weight line, backing and leader unless the seller confirms otherwise; our guide on how to set up a fly rod and reel covers rigging it.

Fly Fusion, an independent magazine, published Raymond Poff’s review in May 2022 after four days in Montana with the LIFT 5 weight rod he bought. He wrote: “ECHO classifies the LIFT as a medium-fast action rod and I agree with the classification”, and “Simply put, the ECHO LIFT is a terrific fly rod at a beyond incredibly reasonable price.” His guide “thought the rod handle was a bit smaller than many rods.”

Echo covers its rods “against manufacturing defects for the life of the original owner” and its reels for “one year from the date of purchase for the original owner”. Amazon’s buy box for this kit is The Kingfisher, a fly shop shipping through Amazon, at Echo’s kit price.

Specs (linked: 9′ 6wt, 4-piece, LIFT-690)

  • Line weight, length, pieces: 6, 9’0″, 4 (maker)
  • Action: medium-fast (maker)
  • In the box: rod, Echo Base reel, fabric-covered case (maker and Amazon listing); fly line, backing and leader not confirmed
  • Reel: Echo Base, resin frame (maker)
  • Weight: 3.9 oz, rod (maker)
  • Warranty: rod, life of the original owner, defects; reel, one year (Echo)

Pros

  • Medium-fast 6 weight rod that Fly Fusion’s reviewer rated highly in the 5 weight
  • Echo’s lifetime warranty on the rod for the original owner
  • Rod and reel case keeps the outfit together

Cons

  • Fly line, backing and leader not confirmed for this listing; Echo and Amazon name only rod, reel and case
  • Tested review covered the 5 weight rod, not this 6 weight kit, and dates from 2022
  • Sold by a fly shop through Amazon, not by Amazon or Echo

TFO Pilot Kit 9′ 8wt, Moderate 8 Weight Kit

Moderate 8 weight kit
8 wt. 9'0" 4 pc. Pilot Kit | Pilot Fly Rod Kit combo…

TFO Pilot

9' 8wt, 4-piece · Moderate

Anglers starting on bass, steelhead or salmon who want a freshwater 8 weight ready to fish.

$279.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

TFO’s moderate-action freshwater 8 weight kit for bass, stripers, steelhead and salmon, sold on Amazon by Backcountry.

Evidence: Retailer review (sells it), not independent. Glenwood Springs Outdoors: 9′ 8wt, with a 500-grain sinking line.

TFO’s Pilot Kit page says it is “Built For: New fly anglers looking for a simple, reliable way to get started”, lists “Action: Moderate” and “Water: Freshwater”, and calls the 9′ 8-weight “Ideal for larger fish like bass, stripers, steelhead, and salmon”. The “Pilot Reel – Lightweight cast aluminum design” comes with “Weight-forward floating line and tapered leader” and backing. TFO does not say whether the 8 weight has a fighting butt.

Glenwood Springs Outdoors, a fly shop that sells it, fished the 8 weight after it “swapped out the stock line and loaded it with a heavy 500-grain sinking line”, so it covers the rod only. It wrote that “The Pilot Series 8-weight consistently delivered powerful casts while maintaining good control.” An r/flyfishing poster with a Pilot of unstated size added: “got a paint pen and add alignment dots is the only thing I’ve done to mine.”

TFO’s warranty covers breakage “due to defect” for “the life of the registered owner” at “no charge”. Amazon’s buy box for this kit is Backcountry, an outdoor retailer shipping its own stock, at TFO’s list price.

How it differs from the Wrangler Salt, the other 8 weight: the Pilot is TFO’s moderate freshwater kit; the Wrangler Salt is Redington’s medium-fast saltwater kit with a fighting butt and a saltwater line.

Specs (linked: 9′ 8wt, 4-piece, TF 08 90 4 PT K)

  • Line weight, length, pieces: 8 wt, 9’0″, 4 (maker)
  • Action: moderate (maker)

  • Reel: Pilot, cast aluminum (maker)
  • Weight: not published
  • Warranty: life of the registered owner, defects, no charge (TFO)

Pros

  • Moderate 8 weight rod TFO aims at bass, stripers, steelhead and salmon
  • TFO’s lifetime warranty for the registered owner
  • Backing, line and leader on a cast aluminum reel

Cons

  • The test found is a retailer’s, and it used a different line
  • TFO lists it for freshwater, not saltwater
  • Fighting butt not stated

10'6" 3wt, 4-piece · Fast

Trout anglers who want to try euro nymphing without assembling a dedicated rod, reel and leader.

$259.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:41 UTC

Verdict

Cortland’s introductory euro nymphing outfit, a long 3 weight with a down-locking seat and a 20-foot euro leader on the line, sold on Amazon by a fly shop.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Trout and Steelhead: Guide Series euro rod, rod only.

Cortland’s Guide Euro Nymph Outfit page calls it “the ultimate introductory Euro combo”, with a “Fast Action, Light Weight 4 pc. Graphite Rod”, “a premium 20ft multi-colored Euro nymph tapered leader and 2mm tippet ring” on a Cortland line, and says “The down-locking reel seat combined with the composite fighting butt allows for exceptional balance and fast hook sets.” Cortland does not say what taper the fly line is. Our what is tippet guide explains what you tie to that ring.

Trout and Steelhead, a guide’s site with affiliate links, lists the Guide Series euro rod sold on its own as its “Best Budget Rod” for euro nymphing. Its author writes: “Every time a new model comes out, I try to get my hands on it fast to test it out, and this one is no exception.” He recommends it “to anyone looking for a 10’6″, 3-weight”, the size linked here; his write-up covers the rod, not Cortland’s reel or line.

Cortland’s outfit page lists a “2 Year Limited Warranty”. AvidMax, a retailer, says that warranty applies to outfits “bought from an authorized Cortland retailer”; Amazon’s buy box is The Kingfisher, a fly shop shipping through Amazon, at Cortland’s price.

Specs (linked: 10’6″ 3wt, 4-piece, Euro Nymph)

  • Line weight, length, pieces: 3 wt, 10.5 ft, 4 (maker)

Pros

  • Long, fast 3 weight euro rod with a down-locking seat and fighting butt

Cons

  • Fly line taper not published
  • Tested write-up covers the rod only
  • Sold by a fly shop through Amazon, not by Amazon or Cortland

Redington Wrangler Salt Fly Fishing Kit, 8 Weight 9 Foot…

Wrangler Salt

9' 8wt, 4-piece · Medium-fast

Anglers planning a first bonefish, redfish or striper trip who want a saltwater-lined 8 weight in one box.

$329.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Verdict

Redington’s medium-fast saltwater 8 weight kit with a fighting butt and a saltwater line, sold by the brand, from the series Hatch Magazine tested in the 5 weight.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Hatch Magazine: Wrangler Trout kit, 9′ 5wt (2023).

Redington’s Wrangler Salt Kit page lists the 890-4S as 8wt, 9’0″, four pieces, for anglers “targeting bonefish, redfish, permit, snook, or stripers”, with a “Performance medium-fast action blank”, a fighting butt, the “CROSSWATER 7/8/9 fly reel” and “RIO’s Saltwater Mainstream WF8F” line. The Amazon bullets call the blank “easy casting medium action” while the Amazon title says medium fast; we follow Redington’s page.

Hatch Magazine tested the 9′ 5 weight Wrangler Trout kit in 2023, not this saltwater kit, and found “a capable medium-fast rod that’s both light and accurate”, adding: “It struggles a bit with very heavy multi-nymph rigs and bigger streamers”. On the shared reel and line: “The Crosswater reel included with the Wrangler isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s exactly the right reel for most beginners”, and “The fly line matches the rod well, even if it has a bit of memory.”

The product page lists a “Lifetime Warranty on rod”. Far Bank’s policy covers “Every new Redington rod purchased through an authorized retailer” with an “original owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship”, and to claim, the owner must send the product “freight paid and insured”. Far Bank, Redington’s parent company, is the Amazon seller for this kit.

Specs (linked: 9′ 8wt, 4-piece, 890-4S)

  • Line weight, length, pieces: 8WT, 9’0″, 4 (maker)
  • Action: medium-fast (maker); “medium action” in the Amazon bullets

  • Seat and butt: anodized aluminum seat, fighting butt (maker)

  • Warranty: rod, original owner, defects, bought from an authorized retailer; owner ships it freight paid and insured (Far Bank policy)

Pros

  • Medium-fast saltwater 8 weight with a fighting butt and a saltwater WF8F line
  • Sold by Redington’s parent company on Amazon
  • Redington’s original-owner warranty on the rod

Cons

  • Composite-frame reel; Hatch says it “isn’t going to win any awards”
  • Tested review covered the 5 weight Trout kit, not this saltwater kit
  • Amazon bullets and Redington’s page differ on the action word

Lamson Liquid Outfit 6wt, Upper-Tier 6 Weight

Upper-tier 6 weight
LAMSON Liquid Combo 6wt. Fly Fishing Rod, Reel w/Fly Line…

Lamson Liquid

9' 6wt, 4-piece · Medium-fast

Trout anglers moving up from a starter outfit who want a 6 weight for nymphs, dries and small streamers, already lined.

$399.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 09:39 UTC

Verdict

Lamson’s medium-fast 9-foot 6 weight outfit with a U.S.-made line, backing and leader on the Liquid S reel, sold by Lamson.

Evidence: Retailer review (sells it), not independent. Outdoor Prolink: Liquid 5wt outfit.

Lamson’s Liquid Outfit page pairs the Liquid rod with “our ultra-reliable Liquid S reel in matching size” and, for the 6 weight, “20lb dacron backing, floating 90′ weight forward trout/general taper U.S. made fly line with loop and 9′ 4x mono leader.” Lamson’s Liquid rod page gives the 6 weight as Medium Fast, 9′, 4 sections, 4.00 oz, with no fighting butt, and says the action lets you “switch from dries to indicators or streamers”. Lamson notes “these outfits are set up for left hand retrieve (cast right/reel left)”.

Outdoor Prolink, a pro-purchase program that sells the outfit, published a review by a member of its marketing team, who fished the 5 weight, not this 6 weight. He wrote: “I tested the Liquid 5 outfit on numerous Colorado rivers”, and “For being a 5 weight rod there is enough backbone to handle a double-nymph rig with ease and throwing smaller streamers.”

Lamson’s warranty is “valid for any defect in material or workmanship for the original owner of a reel or rod”. Lamson’s warranty page asks for a flat shipping and handling fee with each claim, one for a rod and another for a reel.

How it differs from the Echo Lift Kit, the other 9-foot 6 weight: the Lamson sits in the upper tier with Lamson’s Liquid S reel and a U.S.-made line Lamson specifies by weight and taper; the Echo is the mid-tier kit with a resin-frame reel, and Echo and its Amazon listing name only a rod, reel and case.

Verdict

TFO’s moderate-fast 5 weight kit with a sealed aluminum reel, built for anglers who want to “Start Seriously”, sold on Amazon by a fly shop.

Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: TFO.

TFO’s Dispatch Kit page says it is “Built For: Anglers looking to “Start Seriously” in fly fishing” and lists “Action: Moderate-Fast”, “Water: Freshwater | Saltwater” and the 9′ 5-weight as “The all-around trout setup”, with the “Dispatch Reel – Lightweight cast and machined aluminum, fully sealed” and a half-wells cork grip on the 4 to 6 weights. TFO gives a weight of 4.0 to 4.6 oz across the series, not per model. The Amazon bullets call it “Moderate Action”; we follow TFO’s page.

We found no independent or retailer test of the Dispatch Kit. TFO’s page reports an award “Voted by Anglers & Industry”: “Best Freshwater Combo Kit – TFO Dispatch Kit”, a “Fly Fishing Show Consumer Choice Award Winner, 2026”; TFO does not give the award’s criteria.

TFO’s warranty covers breakage “due to defect” for “the life of the registered owner” at “no charge”. Amazon’s buy box for this kit is Stillwater Fly Shop, shipping through Amazon, at TFO’s list price.

How it differs from the Lamson Liquid, the other upper-tier outfit: the Dispatch is a 5 weight with a moderate-fast action, a fully sealed reel and a half-wells grip; the Lamson is a medium-fast 6 weight with Lamson’s Liquid S reel and a line specified by taper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the best fly rod and reel combo?

It depends on the fish and water. Trout and Steelhead writes that “The best fly fishing combos are the ones that” fit four tests: “Fit your budget.”, “Work for the type of fish you are going after.”, “Work for the type of water you want to fish.” and “Work for the method of fly fishing you want to use.”

Q. What is the best fly rod and reel combo for trout?

Trout and Steelhead calls a 9-foot 5 weight “the best all-around choice for trout”. Five combos here are 9-foot 5 or 6 weights; the comparison table sets out how they differ.

Q. Is it worth spending more on a combo?

Sources disagree. Trout and Steelhead writes “I recommend buying the most expensive combo you can afford.” Into Fly Fishing writes that “When you’re just starting out, it’s not recommended to spend a fortune on the best fly rods and the best fly reels”, and suggests starting with a budget combo “and decide if you even like the sport before potentially upgrading later.” In the ranking Reddit thread, posters who favoured the dearer outfit pointed to its warranty.

Q. Is a combo better than buying a rod and reel separately?

A combo matches the rod, reel and line weights for you and usually arrives rigged. Trout and Steelhead lists as a con that “It’s impossible to personalize a pre-made combo or get inventive.” Buying separately lets you choose the line; our guides on how to set up a fly rod and reel and how to choose a fly rod cover that route.

Q. Should I upgrade the fly line that comes with a combo?

Posters in the ranking Reddit thread say the line is where kits save money, and Trout and Steelhead suggests to “consider upgrading your line as soon as you can”. Some makers here specify the line: Redington includes RIO Saltwater Mainstream in the Wrangler Salt, Lamson a U.S.-made weight-forward trout taper, Pflueger a twin-colored line with welded loops.

Final Verdict

For a budget combo, the Pflueger President XT 9′ 5wt (check price) is sold and shipped by Amazon, has a die-cast aluminum reel per Pflueger, and Athlon Outdoors tested it in this exact size, though its tester found it “pricey for beginners” and wanted guide-alignment markings. For the mid tier, the Echo Lift Kit 690 (check price) gives you Echo’s medium-fast 6 weight and a lifetime rod warranty for the original owner, though Fly Fusion’s test covered the 5 weight rod and a fly line in the box is not confirmed. For the upper tier, the Lamson Liquid Outfit 6wt (check price) comes with a U.S.-made line, backing and leader on Lamson’s Liquid S reel, set up for left-hand retrieve, and the only test we found is a seller’s review of the 5 weight. For euro nymphing or saltwater, the Cortland Guide and Redington Wrangler Salt are the specialist outfits in this guide.
