The short answer
The Okuma Safyre SF-2500A is the reel Field & Stream named Best Overall in its under-$100 test (size not stated); the Shimano Sedona FJ 2500HG is the size both Field & Stream and Outdoor Life fished; and the Daiwa Crossfire LT 3000-C is the entry-level reel Field & Stream picked for tight budgets.

Spinning Reels Under $100: Top Picks
A hundred dollars still buys a good spinning reel, but not always the one the test roundups crowned: two of their winners now list above $100 on the makers’ own sites. So every reel below passed two checks on November 3, 2026: the maker’s list price for the exact size we link is $100 or less, and Amazon’s offer was at or under it. Specs are the maker’s figures for that size.

How We Picked Reels at or Under $100
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer documentation, published third-party reviews and owner reports; we have not tested these products ourselves.
What every reel had to meet
- A $100 ceiling on two prices: the maker’s list price for the linked size and the Amazon offer, both at or under $100 on November 3, 2026. Prices change; the live price is in the product table.
- A 2500 to 3000 class size (Lew’s 300 and Pflueger 30 on their own scales), the range both tests fished.
- In stock on Amazon, new, seller named in each review.
- Maker specs for the exact size, or “not published”.
Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and the forum threads and how this list differs from our other reel guides
Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and the forum threads
Field & Stream’s under-$100 test fished 11 reels for bass over a year; Outdoor Life’s fished river smallmouth and reservoirs. Neither sells reels, so we treat both as independent and quote them by name.
Two r/Fishing_Gear threads rank for this search. The top reply in the first calls Abu, Lew’s and Pflueger “second grade reels”; in the second, two posters back the Pflueger President.
How this list differs from our other reel guides
Two picks share a series, not a size, with a live Outgearly guide: our freshwater reel guide links the Penn Pursuit V 4000 (we link the 3000), and our ultralight reel guide the Pflueger President 20 (we link the 30). The President XT in the freshwater and trout reel guides now lists above $100.
100 Dollar Spinning Reels: Detailed Reviews
Picks: Okuma Safyre SF-2500A, Shimano Sedona FJ 2500HG, Daiwa Legalis LT 2500D, Penn Pursuit V 3000, Lew’s Speed Spin 300, Pflueger President 30, Daiwa Crossfire LT 3000-C, Abu Garcia Max X 3000.
Okuma Safyre SF-2500A, Sealed-Body 2500
Bass anglers who also fish brackish or inshore water and want one 2500 for both.
$89.18 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 02:42 UTCVerdict
Field & Stream’s Best Overall under $100, with a splash-rated body for brackish trips.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Field & Stream: size not stated.
Field & Stream calls the Okuma Safyre “the most versatile sub-$100 spinning reel” it tested. Its tester added: “Throughout testing, the Safyre landed more bass than the other reels.” It does not name the size it fished; its spec list (7+1 bearings, sizes 1000 to 4000) fits the current Safyre.
Okuma’s page says “The Hydro Block II body offers IPX-3 splash protection.” The two Okuma sites disagree on drag: Okuma USA lists 18 lb for the SF-2500A, the global page 6 kg (about 13 lb). Okuma USA lists it at $89.99. Sold by Amazon.com at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Okuma Safyre SF-2500A, 5.3:1)
Pros
- IPX-3 splash-rated body and a carbonite multi-disc drag, per Okuma
Cons
- Okuma’s two sites list different max drag for the same model
Who should buy it
Bass anglers who also fish brackish or inshore water and want one 2500 for both.
- Bearings: 7BB + 1RB (Okuma)
- Price tier: $$$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Shimano Sedona FJ 2500HG, Cold-Forged Gear 2500
Freshwater bass anglers who want the size two published tests fished.
$89.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 02:42 UTCVerdict
The one pick both tests fished in the size we link.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Field & Stream: 2500.
Field & Stream: “I tested the Sedona in the 2500 size and was blown away by how close it performed to my Shimano favorite, the Stradic Ci4+.” Shimano’s US line has one 2500, the 2500HG. Outdoor Life fished the 2500 too: “The drag on the Sedona is as smooth as it gets for any reel under $100, and with 20 pounds of drag strength, it can fight big fish.” Its caveat: “Ultimately, the biggest weakness with this reel is the material it’s made with,” meaning the composite frame.
On r/Fishing_Gear, one poster says the “Sedona misses an important bearing on the pinion gear,” and another had a bearing issue after a month that Shimano fixed by sending “a whole new reel.” Shimano’s chart lists it at $89.99. We link the clamshell pack (SE2500HGFJC), same specs. Sold by Fishermen’s Source on Amazon at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Shimano Sedona FJ 2500HG, SE2500HGFJC)
Pros
- Hagane cold-forged gear and SilentDrive, per Shimano
Cons
- Composite frame, which Outdoor Life names as its main weakness
Who should buy it
Freshwater bass anglers who want the size two published tests fished.
- Bearings: 3+1 (Shimano)
- Price tier: $$$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Daiwa Legalis LT 2500D, Zaion-V Rotor 2500
Lake and river bass anglers who want a light 2500 with plenty of listed drag.
$84.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 02:42 UTCVerdict
22 lb of drag in a 2500, per Daiwa, at the top of the $100 band.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Field & Stream: size not stated.
Field & Stream: “The ATD drag system is fantastic, super smooth, and strong.” It does not say which size it fished, but calls the 2500 “perfect for most bass applications.” Daiwa’s page lists 22 lb of drag and 7.2 oz for the 2500D, and a “ZAION-V Air Rotor for weight reduction and added rigidity.” The top r/Fishing_Gear reply names it for strictly freshwater fishing; several other posters mean the Japanese-market “23 Legalis,” a different reel. Daiwa lists the 2500D at $99.99. Sold by Hunting_Stuff on Amazon at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Daiwa Legalis LT 2500D, LEGLT2500D)
Pros
- 22 lb max drag and 7.2 oz in a 2500, per Daiwa
Cons
- Daiwa’s list price sits at the $100 ceiling
- 5.2:1; Daiwa’s 2500D-XH is the 6.2:1 version
Who should buy it
Lake and river bass anglers who want a light 2500 with plenty of listed drag.
- Bearings: 5BB + 1RB (Daiwa)
- Price tier: $$$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Penn Pursuit V 3000, Inshore Saltwater 3000
Verdict
A saltwater-built 3000; Outdoor Life tested the previous Pursuit IV.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, previous generation. Outdoor Life: Pursuit IV 4000.
Outdoor Life fished the earlier Pursuit IV 4000: “The Penn Pursuit IV is one of the rare spinning reels built to handle saltwater rigors while not breaking the bank.” It also listed “Heavy” and “Not very smooth” as cons. Penn’s page says “The graphite body is corrosion resistant.” Penn’s size chart puts the 3000 at “Inshore” for redfish, trout and flounder, and publishes no weight. Our freshwater reel guide links the Pursuit V 4000; Penn lists 12 lb of drag for the 3000 against 15 lb for the 4000. Penn lists the 3000 at $89.99. Sold by Amazon.com at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Penn Pursuit V 3000, PURV3000)
Pros
- Corrosion-resistant graphite body and sealed bearings, per Penn
Cons
- Outdoor Life found the previous Pursuit IV heavy and less smooth
- Bearings: 4 sealed stainless + instant anti-reverse (Penn)
- Price tier: $$$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Lew’s Speed Spin 300, Braid-Ready Spool 300
Bass anglers who spool straight braid and want a fast retrieve.
$69.95 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 02:42 UTCVerdict
A 6.2:1 reel with a spool made for braid.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Field & Stream: Speed Spin Gen 2, size given as 2000.
Field & Stream fished the Speed Spin Gen 2 and gives the size as 2000 (Lew’s numbers sizes 75 to 400): “One feature I really like is the braid-ready aluminum spool.” Its textured spool grips braid without backing (see our braided line picks). Outdoor Life tested an earlier Speed Spin in its 30 size: “The biggest knock against this reel is the brass gearing, which aren’t as durable and corrosion resistant as machined aluminum or stainless steel.” The current Amazon title still says “Solid Brass Speed Gears.”
Lew’s page lists 9+1 bearings for the 300; the Amazon listing page says 8+1, so we use Lew’s. Lew’s lists it at $69.99. Sold by Outdoor Sports Specialties and shipped by Amazon at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Lew’s Speed Spin 300, SS300HSG2)
Pros
- Braid-ready double-anodized aluminum spool, per Lew’s
Cons
- Brass gearing, which Outdoor Life faulted on the earlier model
- Bearings: 9+1 (Lew’s)
- Price tier: $$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Pflueger President 30, Size 30 All-Rounder
Anglers who want one mid-tier reel for bass, panfish and catfish.
$68.27 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 02:42 UTCVerdict
The President two forum posters back; unlike the XT, it lists under $100.
Evidence: No independent test; owner reports. r/Fishing_Gear: size and generation not stated.
A poster on r/Fishing_Gear: “Pfluger president is my favorite spinning reel for under $100. Ive caught bass, bluegill, and 10 pound cats with that thing.” Another poster says they own four. Neither names the size or generation; the top reply in the other thread calls Pflueger “second grade.”
Pflueger’s page lists a “lightweight graphite body and rotor, an aluminum braid-ready spool” and publishes no weight. Our ultralight reel guide links the smaller President 20. Pflueger lists the 30 at $74.95. Sold by Amazon.com at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Pflueger President 30, PRES30X)
Pros
- Ten bearings and a braid-ready aluminum spool, per Pflueger
Cons
- 10 lb max drag, per Pflueger
- Bearings: 10 (Pflueger)
- Price tier: $$ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Daiwa Crossfire LT 3000-C, Entry-Level 3000
New anglers and anyone rigging a spare rod on a tight budget.
$27.00 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 02:42 UTCVerdict
Field & Stream’s Best Budget pick, overhauled for 2026.
Evidence: Independently reviewed, same series. Field & Stream: size not stated.
Field & Stream: “The Daiwa Crossfire LT is hands down the best budget spinning reel you can buy.” It does not name the size it fished. Daiwa’s page calls the current reel “a complete model overhaul, now equipped with AIRDRIVE DESIGN.” A poster on r/Fishing_Gear has used a Crossfire on a panfish rod “for about 3 years now with no issues,” so the earlier model. Daiwa lists the 3000-C at $34.99. Sold by Amazon.com at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Daiwa Crossfire LT 3000-C, CRFLT3000-C)
Pros
- 22 lb max drag in the 3000-C, per Daiwa
Cons
- 3BB + 1RB and 9.2 oz, per Daiwa
- Bearings: 3BB, 1RB (Daiwa)
- Price tier: $ (live Amazon price in the table above)
Abu Garcia Max X 3000, Compact-Body 3000
Budget freshwater anglers who would rather buy from Amazon's own stock.
$39.99 from AmazonAs of Nov 4, 02:42 UTCVerdict
An entry-level 3000 from Amazon’s own stock, judged on specs alone.
Evidence: No independent test; maker specs. Source: Abu Garcia.
We found no independent test of the Max X spinning reel, so this rests on Abu Garcia’s page: an asymmetric body “allowing for a more compact reel,” a “hybrid V-Spool and hybrid V-Rotor design,” and “a 4+1 bearing system and Rocket Line Management.” It publishes no weight. Abu Garcia lists the 3000 at $39.99. Sold by Amazon.com at the time of writing.
Specs (linked: Abu Garcia Max X 3000, MAXXSP3000)
Pros
- Compact asymmetric body and V-Rotor, per Abu Garcia
Cons
- No independent test or owner reports we could cite
Who should buy it
Budget freshwater anglers who would rather buy from Amazon’s own stock.
- Bearings: 4+1 (Abu Garcia)
- Price tier: $ (live Amazon price in the table above)
How to Choose a Spinning Reel at or Under $100
Size
Pflueger and Lew’s use their own scales (30, 300), so compare line capacity, not the number. Outdoor Life: “Despite the wide range, most anglers will want a reel in the 2500 to 4000 size for all-purpose use in freshwater.” Our spinning reel size guide matches sizes to line and fish.
Gear ratio
The picks here run from 5.2:1 to 6.2:1. Outdoor Life: “If you plan on fishing faster lures or want more control over your presentation, consider looking for models with high-speed variations that have gear ratios in 6.2:1 or up.” Daiwa sells the Legalis LT 2500 in both (2500D at 5.2:1, 2500D-XH at 6.2:1).
Drag and line capacity
Max drag is the most the drag will hold, not the setting you fish; the picks list 10 lb to 22 lb. Our guide to setting up a spinning reel covers setting it.
Ball bearings
Counts here run from 3+1 to 10. Outdoor Life credits the Sedona’s Hagane “balanced design and cold-forged gearing” for making it “very comfortable and smooth to fish,” so read the count as one spec among several.
Spinning reel under $100 for bass
Both tests fished bass with 2500 and 3000 sizes: here, the Shimano Sedona FJ 2500HG, the Daiwa Legalis LT 2500D and, on a budget, the Daiwa Crossfire LT 3000-C.
Budget spinning reel for saltwater
Penn builds the Pursuit V 3000 for inshore salt, and Okuma designs the Safyre for “freshwater and saltwater inshore environments.” Rinse any reel after salt; see how to clean a fishing reel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who makes the best spinning reels for the money?
Field & Stream’s three under-$100 award winners came from Okuma, Shimano and Daiwa. On r/Fishing_Gear, the top reply says Shimano and Daiwa; other posters back Pflueger.
Q. What is the best value-for-money fishing reel?
It depends on the tier. Field & Stream calls the Daiwa Crossfire LT “the best budget spinning reel you can buy.” In the middle tier, the Pflueger President 30 is the reel two forum posters name.
Q. What is the best spinning reel under $150?
That is above this guide’s cap. Two reels the tests named under $100 now fall in that band: Daiwa lists the Exceler LT 3000D-C (Outdoor Life’s Best Overall) at $119.99, and Pflueger lists the President XT at $119.95. Our trout reel guide covers the President XT 25.
The bottom line
